By LARRY WOOSTER AUBURN,NY,APR.13 The members of the Western New York Motocross Association kickstarted their hearts - and the 2003 season - with the first Moose Racing Products Day at central New York's "place to race," Frozen Ocean Moto-X Park, on April 13. Just a short week ago, much of this region was hit with a late-season ice storm, leaving many families without power for close to a week. The First Family of MX promotion in central New York State is the Denman family and their staff, and as usual they had Frozen Ocean's first-class motorcycle-racing facility shining like a jewel above Lake Owasco. Soon, the familiar stadiumcross-style track will be radically altered by Bill Denman Jr.. creating a bigger, more motocross-style track. and with the expansion will come lots of additional lighting. But fear not, loyal Night Of Champions stadiumcross lovers; Bill vows to return the track to stadium cross style for the two biggest events at Frozen Ocean in 2003. A "phat" gate of the region's top 16- to 24year· old throttle jockeys were loaded up, with throttles pinned, ready to live it up on the big, loamy track. James Houston rocketed out in front of Matt Morgan and Alan Robinson to grab the holeshot, and he held on to a slight advantage going into turn two. Robinson looked like he had the pass made on Morgan, but Morgan was on the pipe over the big 10,000-gallon tabletop jump, leapfrogging into the lead. Morgan stayed on the gas and opened up an early three· or four· second lead over hard-charging Robinson, while Mikey Silva role outgunned Houston for the third spot, with Nigel Martin all over his fender. Morgan's luck went south quickly when he stalled his big red Honda, and Robinson, Silva role and Martin all capitalized. moving past him. Martin powered his way to the front, now with Silvarole allover his fender, and they both got past Robinson. Morgan wasn't done yet; he quickly began picking off riders, moving his way back up into the third slot. Martin was in a whole new area code, laying down two-minute-and-20-second lap times· just six or eight seconds off local champion Bruce Stratton's average 250cc/Open Expert lap times on this day. Silvarole made a cornering mistake late in the moto, Clllowing Morgan to claim second, and Jeremy Stewart captured third. Martin took the checkered nag in moto one with a 15·second lead over MorgCln, fol· lowed by Stewart, Silvarole and Robinson. Mota two was sure to be a free-for·all among this gate full of young guns, and just about anything was possible. Silva role went ballistic off the start, leaving Houston, Robinson, Nick Colombo and Jared Link in bar-tobar-to·bar-to-bar combat in his vapor trail. Martin picked a sweet spot and lit his after· burners. rocketing all the way up to the second slot in a moon shot over the tabletop jump. Silvarole held the lead past the crowd of spectators, but Martin outgunned him to take the lead. Martin opened up a small lead, leav· ing Silvarole peddling as fast as he could to keep up. Silvarole slipped up, allowing Houston, Robinson, Colombo and Jonathan Kriegbaum to get by. Morgan had his hands full again. recovering from a lousy holeshot, but again he began picking off riders, sometimes two per lap. Robinson and Colombo dueled it out for second, and Silvarole was back swapping decals with Morgan for fourth. Both Silvarole and Morgan worked their way past Colombo and Robinson, while Martin extended his lead. Morgan was back on the gas, finding himself once again running in the second slot and 10 seconds behind Martin . but gaining. Stewart was back in the hunt, hounding both Robinson and Silvarole at every turn. Martin cleared the finish line first with more than a 10·second lead, claiming first overall with his 1-1 performance. Morgan posted 2-2 finishes and ciaimed second overall. Stewart (3-3) rounded out the top three overall. Robinson went 5-4 to snag fourth overall, and Silvarole posted 4-5 efforts to earn fifth overall. Michael Ziehm Sr. WHITE PLAINS, KY, APR. 13 West Kentucky's finest hunting lodge added one more attraction to its roster: hare scram· bles. The Cottonmouth Lodge intended to host its first Mid·South Championship Winter Hare Scrambles Series event earlier in the season, but someone overlooked a very important date: that event was scheduled on the opening day of gun season, so the AMAtpirelli Tire/ Moose/Parts Unlimited/White Brothers-sponsored event was postponed, and it became the last race of the season. It was well worth the wait for 250cc/Open A winner Alan Westerfield, who got his first overall win of the series in White Plains, Kentucky. "It was kind of a survival course," said Westerfield. "Everybody was getting stuck in ruts, and there were several mudholes. Everything worked out for me, and I guess I got lucky and picked the right lines." Even though Westerfield's class was the second class to leave the StZlrt, that didn't stop him from grabbing the glory. He and Timmy P'Pool and Michael Cornett battled throughout the whole race and caught up to two AA riders, Dustin Gibson and Steve Gordon. on the first lap, on a long fire road. and then it was history for the AA class. P'Pool made the fastest lap time and was nying on his RM250 Suzuki, while Westerfield and Cornett manhandled their machines from behind. Although Gibson held the front position for most of the race. he was actually running in fourth place, on elapsed time, behind the three front-runners in the 250cc/Open A class. "I thought for a while that I would have to settle for third place," said Westerfield, "because Dustin and Timmy were right in front of me for the first three laps, but they kept making mistakes, and I kind of took advantage. I was really happy to be able to race with Dustin for a while. On the last lap, he got stuck in a big rut, and that was the last time I saw him." Westerfield swapped the lead several times with P'Pool and was always checking behind him for Cornett. On the fifth lap. he got around P'Pool one last time in a swamp section when he took a faster line. "All season long." Westerfield claimed, "I'd have to check for Cornett, because he'd be right behind you, and you wouldn't even know it. He's just like one of those stealth fighters; except he's riding a Kawasaki." On the last lap, Westerfield ran away with the lead and for the first time finished a Mid-South Championship race in first place overall. P'Pool came in second, and Cornett took third. Westerfield and P'Pool have ridden impressively all year long. and they both made the top five overall for this year's competition. Westerfield holds fifth place overall, P'Pool is in fourth, and Jeff Cregg holds third. This season, Gibson is in second place overall. "I got off to a slow start," Gibson admitted. "Once I got used to my KTM, I picked it up and came on strong. This track was pretty gnarly, with a lot of deep ruts. You had to really watch where you were going." Gibson finished the Cottonmouth in fourth "" U "" e place overall and placed first in the AA class. Gordon made the top five and came in second in the AA class. Louis Gibson, alias "Turtle," is no slowmoving tortoise. After becoming the series winner in the Senior B class, he decided to check out the Senior A-class scenery. He fin· ished in fourth place in the Senior A class and came in 25th overall. Scott Martin was eighth overall and the winner of the class, and Dallas Mayer and Steve Thomas followed in second and third, respectively. Paul Michels came in fifth. Ronnie Hackett and John Giles both had four wins in the Super Senior class this season. Their Super Senior battle ended with Hackett taking this day's win and finishing up the series as the champion of the class, while Giles came in second. As is usual with the Super Senior class, it came down to the last battle to determine the winner. At this event, Gerald Westerfield took second place, and Giles followed in third. Cottonmouth Hare Scrambles: At the sixth round of the AMA Mid-South Championship Winter Hare Scrambles Series in White Plains, Kentucky, Dustin Gibson finished as the AA-class winner but placed fourth overall on elapsed time, behind three 250cc Open A riders. nevvs MAY 14, 2003 63
