East Champion Branden Jesseman proudly accepted his trophy, as did West Champion James "Bubba" Stewart, who made a surprising appearance considering the crash he had suffered the night before, which left him with a broken collarbone and, no doubt, a splitting headache. Despite feeling sore, Stewart made one of the best, and even the funniest, speeches of the night. "Yeah, I kind of had an accident last night," Stewart joked. Supercross promoter Clear Channel Entertainment held its traditional year-end THQ World Supercross GP/AMA Supercross Series Awards Banquet at the Hard Rock Cafe Hotel and Casino on May 4. the day after the Las Vegas Supercross. And. once again, the banquet. hosted by Art Eckman, was another first·c1ass gala event. The banquet pays tribute to the series champions and recognizes the accomplishments of high achievers - on and off the track - of the just-concluded series. Of course, the highlight of the banquet was the trophy presentation to the series' top riders. This year there was an additional trophy to be handed out, and that was the THQ World Supercross GP first-place trophy, which was officially presented to the series inaugurai champion Chad Reed. The World Supercross GP Series included the two rounds in Switzerland and Holland at the end of last year and all of the traditional AMA Supercross Series rounds in the United States, excluding the Daytona Supercross. Riders who did not compete in those first two European rounds were not eligible for the World Supercross GP title. Reed won the title with room to spare over Heath Voss and Tim Ferry. The first six finishers in the THQ World Supercross GP Series were all Yamaha-mounted. Ricky Carmichael was awarded his th.ird 250cc AMA Supercross crown. as well. He accepted the trophy. which was far more hard-eamed than the one he won last year. McGrath's mother. Ann. got on stage and related some high and low moments throughout McGrath's career, but, as you might imagine. most of them were highs. Afterwards, CCE's Charlie Mancuso took the stage to announce three tributes created to perpetuate Jeremy McGrath's name, one of which is a scholarship set up in his name. Second. from now on, the first-place trophy of the 250cc series will be known as the Jeremy McGrath Trophy. And, finally, two 70-percent life-size bronze statues of McGrath have been constructed and will be erected permanently at the AMA museum in Ohio and at Anaheim's Edison International Field, the site of McGrath's first 250cc Supercross win in 1993. All told, McGrath won 10 times (including two 125cc-c1ass wins) at Anaheim. McGrath received a standing ovation when he took the stage and was obviously genuinely moved by the tributes. McGrath broke down a couple of times, saying that he had thought his hardest speech was over when he initially announced his retirement in January. He added that the year was kind of tough on him because it was like "retiring 16 times." There were plenty of other awards handed out, as well. Moto XXX's Alan Brown received the MMI Top Tech Award for being voted the mechanic of the year. Brown tunes for Larry Ward.
