Elko Motocross - By lEE THEIS Mullen regained it entering the third tum. They swapped the lead at every tum from there to the finish, with Mullen winning by inches at the flag. Basically the same riders lined up for a 25-lap 600cc A/Pro final. This time, Mullen took the lead from Wood, Phillips and Mees. At the end of the opening lap, Mees sliced into second. The order stayed the same, with the top four very close until about the 12th lap, when the race was stopped for a downed rider right after Mees slipped into the lead. It took several restarts for the field to cover four laps, with Jake J.ohnson going from joyriding around at the rear to picking off one or two on each restart to go into the fifth spot. Off the final restart, Wood took second, and Winsett got by Mees for third on the 14th lap. Mees recovered, getting by Winsett and Wood on the 17th lap. By that time, Mullen had pulled out several lengths, keeping Mees from trying a repeat of the Sportsman final. Baer put his Battlefield H-D/Yertucci Performance Equipment-sponsored machine in front of Chris Klinefelter, John Lewis and Mees at the start of the 250cc A final. Coming off the fourth turn on lap three, Klinefelter's Deer Park Cycle/Williamson's Honda/DMA-sponsored Honda got a better drive and took the lead, The order stayed the same until Mees got by Lewis for third at the start of the final lap. Mees did manage to win one class, the 500cc Two-Valve class, on his Buell. Todd Kendig topped the Over 30 class, and David Smith stayed upright for the entire distance for the Over 40 win. Mike Keane was the quickest of the Vintage riders. Kenneth Venarchick won the 50cc OilInjected and 50cc (4-6) classes, while Tyler Stacey held off Joey Schmidt for the 50cc (7-8) win, Results 85 (i2.13): I. Cameron Rodriguez (Yam): 2. Brodie Hwnphries (Suz); 3. Alex Matteson (Suz); 4. Prince Kapahulmua (Suz): 5, E.J. under way. Mello began to stretch out a lead, while Lant fought his way into third. Hinners stayed closer this time, but the outcome was never in doubt, and Mello crossed the line with his second straight win and the overall 65cc (10-11) crown, leading Hinners, Palmer and Kenze Johnson in the final results. Lant, flash· ing through the pipes in third, easily won the 65cc (7 -9) division, topping Humphries, Jessee Brown and Nanney. Michael Gangi was the best of the Beginners. Scott Theobald came out on top of the slash-and-burn 250cc Intermediate contest after wild battles for positions in both motos. The 250cc contest was a combined race, so Pro rider Tim Symes shot out of the gate to lead Theobaid and fellow Intermediate Levi Jensen around the first tum. Symes crashed in the sand section, and Jensen passed for the lead, and Intermediate Justin Fraughton battled his way into second place. Jensen opened a lead as Theobald took back second in a sharp comer. Jensen was hanging it out in the lead, while Fraughton was charging back, repassing for second. Jensen won round one, with Fraughton leading Theobald past the checkers. Theobald nailed the second-half holeshot, ahead of Symes and Jensen. When Jensen had trouble, Fraughton took over third, with Pro rider Justin Jenson right on his tail. Fraughton put the pressure on, battling into second and closing to within a bikelength of the leader at the checkers. Theobald's narrow victory earned him the overall 250cc Intermediate crown, ahead of Fraughton, Levi Jensen and John LaBreche. Justin Jenson bested Symes and Corwin Simper for the 250cc Pro title, while Kenny Martin topped Jeremy Newman and Andrew Brisk in the Novice division. Rogers (Kaw). 85 (14-16): I. Michael Leib, Comfy on his Kawi By JYlJKE "SIR SI'IlLEY" RYER PERRIS, CA, APR. 6 Michael Leib showed up at round five to prove the rumor mills right. Speculation had it that he had made the switch from the orange machines to the brand that "lets the good times roll." Leib did just that, having a good time while rolling to a 1-1 sweep of the 60cc (g-I I) and Open classes, as well as the 80cc (Through 11) class. American Suzuki-backed Davi Millsaps was untouchable in the 125cc Intermediate class, as he nailed the overall with a 1-1 tally and then had a short battle with American Honda's Mike Alessi, who had the chance to ride a 125cc machine in the Schoolboy class. Alessi grabbed the holeshot and led for about three-quarters of a lap in mota one before Millsaps went hot into a turn on the inside, forcing Alessi to the outside. Although the Alessis don't have many opportunities to ride the 125s, Mike pushed his abilities a bit more and soaked up the experience for the inevitable move to the larger machine. Mike finished four or five seconds behind MilJsaps in mota one and finished second overall with a pair of twos. Jeff Alessi is still recuperating from a broken left arm and admitted to having a hard time holding on to the 125cc machine, as his arm is not yet quite 100 percent. Despite that, he still pulled into third in both motos, nudging Frankie Salvatore and Chad Gores out of the top three; they finished out the top five. Thor/Moto Pro-backed Zac Wray was able to take the win from Millsaps in the 250cc Intermediate class. Having won the first mota after doing all he could to hold off the charging Wray, Millsaps slipped to third in moto two, and Wray picked up the win for the overall. Millsaps still finished second overall, and Chad Charbonneau finished third aboard his CR. Mid Cities rider Doug Frankos continues to pose a threat in the Over 40 Master class; he picked up his third overall win with a 2·1 score. Tony Schuler picked up the second spot with a 3-2 score after malo-one winner Ron Turner finished a disappointing fourth in moto two. Turner finished third overall and currently has one win under his kidney belt. Robert Holcomb nailed down a win in mota two to claim the overall from Tim Welch, who finished 1-2 on the day for second overall. This is win number two for Holcomb, and Welch has a win from the previous round. Justin Morgan finished out the class with a 3-3 score aboard his KTM. z w " w a: a> z ~ Mullen Makes Money at S'burg ST Opener ~ ~ By LEN BREECH SHIPPENSBURG, PA, APR. 6 After his Honda suffered a mechanical problem in practice, Eric Rausch/Rausch Fuel Oils-sponsored Donnie Mullen borrowed Brian Phillips' backup Rotax to win a pair of star· studded finals, the Sportsman and 600cc A events. Half the Sportsman field held a National number, with a defending Sportster Champion thrown in. However, a young Expert, Shawn Baer, took the lead at the start of the Sportsman final, with Mullen, Jared Mees, Jess Roeder and Phillips in close pursuit. Mullen took the lead off turn two on lap four, with Mees taking second in the same spot on the seventh lap. After starting on the penalty line, Rick Winsett moved up to battle Raun Wood for fifth by the eighth lap. After a few more laps, Winsett broke away and started after Roeder. Mees got up to Mullen in the closing laps, getting beside him with three laps to go and putting his Lancaster H-D/Michael's H-D Classics/John's Masonry·sponsored machine into the lead at the start of the 11 th lap, but 50 BEG: I.
