250cc/Open and Over 25 Pro wins aboard his Honda. Short topped the 85cc (7-11) and Supermini (9-11) classes. Two other riders came close to accom· plishing such a feat. Kory Huffman, who had won the aforementioned 125cc C class, also ; i r .. i • l , t ~ finished second overall to Lockett in the 250cc/Open C class. Washington's Alex Wirkus, who topped the I 25cc B class overall, trailed Oregon's Guy E. Tow in the 250cc/ Open B class. Tow, who was perhaps the most dominant rider in the C class last year, picked up a win in the day's opening moto, the 250cc/Open B class. While Tow did trail the top three Professional riders, the Honda CRF450R·mounted rider from Rainier, Oregon, did prove to all on hand just how much the teenager has improved in just one year. Washington '5 Jason Thomas bolted out front at the start of the combined 250cc/Open Pro and B classes, but his lead was of short duration, as Matthews got around Thomas on lap three and retained the lead for 10 more grueling laps. Matthews, a veteran AMA West· em Four-Stroke National rider, picked up the top money in the Pro class, followed by Thomas and rookie Pro Joe Brockway . Tow led the way in the B class, followed by Wirkus and Oregonians Danny Costa, Eric Stevenson and Bill Barrier, who rounded out the top five. Matthews' double-class decimation was complete after he also posted the win in the combined Over 25 Pro/Over 25 C/Before The Hill B/C/D contest. Thomas Younger was Matthews' closest competition, finishing out the day with a second-place finish. The day's largest class was the 125cc C class, which was won by the elder of the two Huffman brothers, Kory. The 15-year-old recently made the switch from Kawasaki to Yamaha, and he patiently trailed fellow Washougal native Ron Coblentz on the opening circuit of the class' single moto before making his move to nab the lead. Oregon's Robert Wullbrandt rode an inspiring race, overcoming a poor start in the 28·rider field to close in on leader Huffman, although the race went Huffman's way and Wul1brandt finished second. Nic Wolfer, Malt Peterman and Kawasaki rider Robby McCabe filled out the top five spots in a race in which, surprisingly, there were only four nonfinishers. Lockett, who made the trek to Washougai from north of Seattle. found out just how fast Kory has become. At 31 years old, the elder statesman in the 250cc/Open C class had to contend with the local teenager in the 10-lap moto. It was Lockett's day; the RM jockey prevailed at moto's end (as he would later in the Over 30 C class). Andrew Gustafsen rode a steady race to finish third, behind Lockett and Huffman but ahead of Shane Garnas and Brandon Woodruff. Gubser, who regularly makes the journey north with his family from his home in Gervais, Oregon. has steadily progressed to the top of the 80cc ranks in the Northwest. On this day, Gubser picked up a win in the Supermini and 85cc (12-15) classes, aithough he did meet his match in fellow Yamaha rider Short, who got out in front of the combined 85cc Age Group classes and, despite a disadvantage of several years, held off Gubser to post the victory. Both, though, were overall winners, as Short was contesting the 85cc (7-11) class. Washougal Motocross Park Washougal, Washington Results, April 13. 2003 (Round EO n 51 (4-6): I.
