Baird, Gillis Better Than Good By BART NEWMAN PORTLAND, MI, APR. 12 After an arctic winter, Michigan riders came out in droves as sunny skies brightened the Portland Trail Riders' motocross facility. On the 50cc Auto track, Jacob Gillis came up big in the second moto to lock up the day's overall in the 50ce Auto Senior class. Meanwhile, out on the big track, due to contingencies from Kawasaki, Yamaha and Honda, big classes were found in nearly every division. In the 16-24 class, Eric Baird nabbed a doubiemota win to grab the overall and his piece of the Honda contingency pie. In the first 50cc Auto Senior moto, Tyler Reamer launched off the line to lead the pack into, through and out of turn one. Gillis, Tyler Delaney, Brandon Pasco and James Sinkler gave chase on the technical track. Reamer had the twisty sandy track dialed in and was on the gas throughout the race, opening up a strong early lead. With Reamer out front and pulling away, the race for second was heating up, as both Delaney and Gillis wanted it badly. All the while, Sinkler, Nicholas Wickerham and Pasco were in a tight fight to stay in the top five. With a clear track and a fast bike, Reamer was running wild out front, clicking off lap after fantastic lap until the checkered flag came out. Gillis put the hit on Delaney on lap three to take over the runner-up position· a spot he would carry home to the checkers. Delaney hung on to Gillis' rear wheel and rode his Polini home to a top-three finjsh, ensuring himself a good pick on the gate in moto two. Sinkler rode well and looked very fast in the back section of the Portland track, holding off a hard-charging Pasco, who was the last rider in the top five. laying down some very strong laps along the way. In mota two, it was Gillis following Reamer through tum one, as Reamer nailed yet another holeshot in this young District 14 season. Sinkler, Delaney and Jarred Williams were all in the top five, battling it out. Having played second fiddle to Reamer all through moto one, Gillis had his fill of that. so he passed Reamer in the sweeping turn up top to take over the lead before lap one was in the books. Sinkler was running third, but he had a lot of company, as he and Delaney and Williams flew around in formation, battling over third. At the halfway point, Gillis was still out front, though Reamer was showing him a wheel in each corner. Theirs was a tight race that would carryon for the duration of the moto. After a tough start, Pasco had battled his way through the pack to join the fight over third, displacing Williams by driving past him down the fast, jump-filled front straight to drop in behind Sinkler and Delaney. At the line, it was Gillis grabbing the win in the all-important second mota, and that netted him the day's overall as well. Reamer left it all out on the track to come home second. which matched his overall score. Sinkler finished third, holding off every attempt that Delaney made to take that spot away, and Delaney come across the line a little more than a bikelength back of Sinkler to finish fourth in one of the better races of the day on the little track. Pasco was just off the pace in fifth. Out on the big track, Baird owned the 16-24 class. After following Shane Carlton through turn one in both matos, Baird turned on the afterburners and let the good times roll. Baird took a pair of mota wins to win the day's overall, pitching his CRF450R sideways at every opportunity, much to the delight of the crowd. Tim Hill (2-4) took second overall, charging through the pack after a slow start and following Baird home in moto one. In moto two, Hill was pushing hard to hang on to Baird's rear fender and went down; he managed to finish fourth, and that was still good enough to claim second overall. The last rung on the ladder went to Shane Carlton (5-2). who was the holeshot hunter all day long, leading the pack through turn one in both motos. Mota one was Carlton's downfall, as he lost his front end early in the moto, which put him at the wrong end of the pack. A solid second in mota two saved the day and left him with a top-three finish. 25.: I. Matth~ Crown (Hon); 2. J~ff Cuny (Hon): 3. Chad Miller (Hon): 4. Rob Gnllgey (Yam): 5. CMC Northwest SpringlSummer Series Round 2: Albany Motorsports Park Randklev Roosts 'em By etA y liGHT ALBANY, OR, APR. 12-13 This season, Husqvama-mounted Nick Randkiev has been among the upper echelon of the Junior ranks in the Northwest, and on the second of two consecutive days of racing at Albany Motorsports Park, the 14-year-old from Albany showed the reason why. At round two of the 12-round CMC Northwest Spring/ Summer Series, Randklev roosted the competition en route to his 125cc and Before The Hill-class wins. Riding out of the Salem, Oregon-based Bill's Motorcycles-Plus shop, the fanner minicycle speedster had tough competition on Sunday from a pair of fellow former 80cc pilots - Jesse Wuori and Trevor JutiJa. Randkiev, though, wasn't the only double-class winner on either day, as KTM rider Tanner Berry, Allen Yother, J.R. Meusling and Justin Kivett all churned out dual-class overall wins on Saturday. While Yother's overall 80cc Beginner and Supermini-class wins on Saturday were impressive, they did come as a bit of a sur· prise - especially in the Supermini class, which is normally dominated by an 80cc Age Group contestant. Tyler Schwentker, a consistent top-three finisher in the 80cc (12- 13) class, trailed Yother in the Supermini class, after also finishing second to Eathyn Wilson in the 80cc 12-13 class. Yother returned later to top the 80cc Beginner class, although he would do it with a 2-2 tally. Steve Jutila, who won the first moto, couldn't replicate that performance in mota two and placed third. Cody Shelton - at 14, the oldest rider in the field - won a mota-two shootout, but his fourth-place finish in mota one dropped him to third overall. ahead of Chris Egan (3-5) and Levi Jutila (5-4). while Portland Trail Riders MX Portland, Michigan Results, April 12, 2003 50 (4-6): I. The 17 -year-old posted double-mota wins in the class, although he did trail the two Before The Hill Intermediate-class riders, Ryan Huege and Guy Tow, at moto's end. While Huege did get the best of the Honda CRF450R-mounted Tow in mota one, Tow picked up a mota-two win to garner the overall Intermediate win. Kivett won moto two as well, to garner the overall Junior win, followed by Suzuki rider Robert Wullbrandt and Kevin Sellon. Kivett duplicated his earlier tally with a 1- 1 domjnation of the 125cc Junior class, again leading Suzuki riders Sellon and Wullbrandt to victory. This time out, though, Sellon settled the score with Wullbrandt and finished second overall by virtue of his second-place finish in moto two. Wullbrandt (3-3), Trevor Jutila (2-5) and Derek Duyck (5-4) filled out the top five overall. Huege was one of the top performers on Sunday, nabbing a pair of Intermediate-class wins. A pair of Professional riders, though, beat the 16-year-old rider from Yamhill, Oregon, in mota one. Southern Oregon rider Devin Watson rode one of his best races of the year to steal a win in the first 250cc Pro/Intermediate mota from Kawasaki rider Robert Holtgrew. Though he performed well at the Portland and Tacoma rounds of the Regional Arenacross Series, Holtgrew couldn't find a way past Watson in mota one, as the 18-yearold Watson prevailed at the finish to lead Holtgrew and the top Intermediates, Calvin Reeves and Huege. Moto two, though, was a different story, as Holtgrew jumped out front at the start and held the point position to the finish, scoring a Pro-class win in the process.
