Nicholas Burson dominated the opening 250cc Intermediate contest from the first lap until the checkers waved. Blake Runestad and Adam Gragg engaged in a fierce battle over second place. with Runestad keeping Gragg at bay right up until the checkers. KTM-mounted Bobby Steffan absconded with the second-mota holeshot and was soon joined by Gragg and Runestad, making for an intense three-rider fight for the top spot. Gragg led the first couple of circuits before Runestad took control. Gragg stayed close and put in a last· lap charge that came up just a couple of bikelengths short in the end. Burson went down on lap one and fought back from last place to finish fourth, behind Steffan, for third overall. eN Results P/W YAM BEG: I. Denver Silvl!l'lake (Yam); 2. Shane Chapman (Yem); 3. CA, APR. 6 Chris Barrett split moto wins with Shane Smith to collect the 250cc Pro-class first-place payback during round two of the 26th annual Cal· ifornia Racing Club Tri-Race Series, held on the Desert Wheels M.C.-prepped sand track at Edwards Air Force Base. Smith quickly made his way to the front of the field when the gate dropped for moto one. Josh Bagge held down second before being overtaken by Barrett on the opening lap. Bar· rett stayed glued to Smith for the first couple of circuits until Smith upped the pace slightly and started putting about a second per lap on Barrett. Smith took the win with a little breathing room over Barrett. Bagge and Travis Smith went at it over third place for the entire mota, with Smith prevailing in the end. Patrick Wade claimed fifth, and Mike Meadows recovered from a fall for sixth. Shane reeled off another holeshot as mota two got under way, but he quickly had Barrett camped out on his back fender. Barrett hounded Smith for a little over a lap on the now.whooped-out layout before moving into the lead. Smith did his best to hang with Barrett, but a couple of minor mistakes on the unforgiving track allowed Barrett to get to the checkers first with five seconds to spare. Bagge and Travis again waged war over third place for most of the race, with the same results as moto one. Meadows went 6-5 to I.. THE SPClRT?
