Muhlenberg County Convention Center Winners Galore at KY Indoor Finale By BOBBY lEwIS GREENVILLE, KY, MAR. 30 The Steve Nace-promoted Kentucky Indoor Series wrapped up at round eight in Greenville, with 36 riders representing eight states on hand. An excellent track surface ensured close racing in just about all of the classes. The Open Pro class pulled to the line. Fast heat winner Logan Myers led down the back straight, with Rod Hartzel on his heels. Myers ran 10 perfect laps to take the win. over Hartzel, Aaron Ladd, John Hlebo and Kyle Long. Hlebo got the perfect gate in the Open ProAm main and moved to a four-bikelength lead by the halfway mark. Long, Myers and Ladd freight-trained around until the white-flag lap, when Myers went down and Ladd struck the downed bike. The red flag came out and the race was called complete, with Hlebo taking the win over Long, Coy Matthews and Justin Hanna. Hartzel also rode the Vet and Senior classes and completely dominated both. Bill Zentmyer hustled his big Triumph to second in the Senior class, laying down big rubber stripes along the way. Barry Benkhart Sr. held off Ron Anderson, Dennis Porter and Ed Clark for third. The 200cc short-track mains belonged to Hayden Gillim, who used good starts to win both. holding off Jeff Carver in the Amateur class and Hanna in the Pro·Ams. c.J. Cooper nipped Frankie Lee Gillim at the line for third in the Amateur field, while Jonathan Heiden tipped over Cooper, Carver and Frankie Lee in the Pro-Am ranks. Hanna was strong as he swept the 200cc Pro-Am and Open Pro-Am classes. Hayden topped the Amateur 200cc n riders also, along with the sweep of the 10-rider 85cc n. He led into turn one and had a tight battle with Nick Page until the flag. Carver wound up third, over Heiden, Frankie Lee and Michael Johnson. Carver made amends by topping the 85cc short track. Heiden was a solid second, while Frankie Lee, Johnson and Hayden filled out the top five. Johnson dominated the 65cc division with convincing wins in both the short track and IT events. Miles Thornton held on for second at the line over Frankie Lee, Tyler Whitecotten and Hayden in the short track. Hayden was a close second in the TT, over Jake Lewis, Ethan Gillim and Frankie Lee. Ethan won the 50cc Shaft classes in convincing manner and also topped the close 50cc Chain main event on the short track. Lewis took the IT win, with Dustin Vincent third, and Andrew Johnson, Nick McFadden and Joseph Crafton rounded out the grid. Pete Sheppard took a narrow win in the Open Amateur main, over heat-race winner Tyler Porter. Hanna jammed to third, while Barry Benkhart held off Scott Martin for fourth. South Fork Dirt Riders Huston Hot at South Fork Opener By RACHAEL MOORE TAYLORVILLE, IL, MAR. 30 New jumps, new bikes, new season: At the first South Fork Dirt Riders race, the riders found themselves facing a different track from the one they left last season. While the nice Budds Creek Motocross Park: Jim Pomeroy airs it out on a vintage Bultaco at the AHRMA event in Budds Creek, Maryland_ 14-24 B: 1. Josh Durbin (Suz): 2. Scott McAdllms (Suz); 3. David Leckrone (YlIm). weather came into town for a few days, the track crew was busy adding a bigger finish· line jump. a bigger double, and other exciting extras. As the riders started showing up for practice, they all were excited at seeing the improvements and couldn't wait to get on the track and try it out. As the first 14-24 moto started, there was already a battle taking place before the pack had even made It to the flrst tum. Doug Huston was able to pull the holeshot, though not without competition from Josh Durbin. As Huston and Durbin started to pull away from the rest of the pack, all eyes were watching to see if the new B rider had what it takes to keep up with Huston. To the amazement of the crowd. Durbin was able to keep up with A rider Huston, and they both got a good run on the improved track. The battle behind them was between Jacob Godar and Scott McAdams. As the laps started adding up, these two riders switched positions at almost every turn. Godar managed to make a pass on McAdams in the downhill. The moto-two holes hot went to Durbin, with Huston and McAdams right on his rear tire. As the pack came around to the start section, Durbin washed his bike out in the turn, and Huston pulled the lead. If Durbin wanted to go home with the overall, he had to pass some serious riders. Durbin started to reel in the other riders, and then he found himself in a good battle with McAdams and Godar. By the second lap, Durbin had made his way to first, leaving McAdams and Godar to battle for second - and that's what they did, Every turn and jump, McAdams and Godar seemed to be riding as one. With only one lap to go, Godar finally got the chance he'd been waiting for and took the pass over McAdams. Godar took second overall, followed by McAdams in third. Huston won the A division, and Durbin topped the B riders. As the flrst 65cc moto started, all the riders were fighting for the lead, but local rider Jesse Smothers pulled his Suzuki to the front of the pack, and that's where he stayed, without any competition. Jordan Jones and Tyler Livingood had a battle going for the secondplace position. Jones stayed in front of livingood and took second. Moto two had the same results for Smothers and Jones. Budds Creek Motocross Park AHRMA Invades the Creek By RAE TVSON BUDDS CREEK, MD, APR. 5 Budds Creek in Maryland has been the scene of some epic motocross battles, and this National event was no exception. But it wasn't Carmichael and Reed this time. In fact, those guys aren't even in the right decade. Does the name Jim Pomeroy ring a bell? How about Jeff Smith? Indeed, for one day a year, Budds Creek goes Vintage. And the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association competitors put on a show that rivaled the best in modem racing. Pomeroy, for the under-30 crowd, was the first American to win a World Championship motocross race when he won the Spanish Grand Prix in 1973. And the former Bultaco factory rider showed that he can still boogie on a Bultaco. Riding an immaculately prepared Pursang from Hugh's Bultaco, Pomeroy put on quite a show, dominating the first Over 50 Expert mota. But even champions make mistakes, and Pomeroy did so, crashing off the start in moto two. Despite a charge that had the crowd on its feet, Pomeroy could not catch the eventual winner, Maico-mounted Jimmy Jerles of Zanesville, Ohio. "That was fun," said Pomeroy. On the other hand, former World Champion Smith had his BSA on cruise control as he rode to a dominating win in the Over 60 Expert class. Spectators also lined the track to watch an unbelievable matchup in the Sportsman 125cc Expert contest. It was a classic, with a New York rider on a Bultaco, an Ohio competitor on a Suzuki, and a local Maryland racer on a Honda CR. In both motos, the trio banged bars and changed positions, with the win ultimately going to National Champion Mark Weaver, on a Suzuki TM. Second went to Tim Weaver of Claverack, New York, and a close third was awarded to Darin Emswiler of New Windsor, Maryland. Results 50 JR: I. Jacob Smolhers (Pol); 2. Austin Hlffner (Suz); 3.
