Local Tucker Rocky sales rep Mike Collins, competition chairman and "Trail Nazi" for the LTR, put together a top-notch barbeque on Saturday night, complete with brisket, sausage, ribs and fixin's. This free feast, sponsored by Tucker Rocky, MSR and Answer, packed the riders with the requisite amount of protein for Sunday's enduro. As the treasurer for the LTR, Scott Frost, put it: "A lot of those riders took care of first and second gas Saturday night." The efforts of the LTR. including chief cook Kerry Simmons, president Wendell Richardson, and section heads Shelby Saunders, Nike Nix, Ronald Jones and David Stuart, are much appreciated. All in all, this was a great event that left most wishing they could spend more time riding in Texas. Glass Ranch Kalgary, Texas Results: April 6. 2003 (Rounds 4/3/31 O/A: I. Michael Wilson (Yam): 2. Hurricane Hills Season Opener AMA District 6 Points Race Hurricane Hills Sports Center 250 NOV: 1. R.J. Reynolds (Hon): 2. MIke Fetherston (Yam): 3. Dockray, Harrison Handle Hurricane By JIM P. SANDERSON CLIFFORD, PA, APR, 6 More than 175 riders came out to the beautiful Hurricane Hills Sports Center in Clifford, Pennsylvania, for the season opener on a cold and windswept spring day, Mother Nature dropped some extensive precipitation on the area several days prior to the event, and overnight temperatures dropped into the 20s, which delayed practice sessions - due to the fact that the ground was still frozen. Once promoter Tom Hurd and his crew went to work ripping up the entire racecourse, track conditions improved greatly, and they continued to do so as the day progressed, When the second half of the race program started, the track was in excellent shape, Kawasaki pilot Colton Harrison and Yamaha pilot Jon Dockray won the 85cc (12-13) and 125cc Amateur classes, respectively. In the 85cc (12-13) class, Joey Keefe went 2-2 for runner-up honors, while Jamie Kriger, who was racing for the first time, carded a 5-3 for third on the day, Walt Zabrowski and Brian Cook rounded out the 125cc Amateur-class podium, In the first 85cc (12-13) moto, Harrison got his number-one-plated KX off the gate and around the first tum in the lead. Trailing him were Marshall Hurd, Keefe, Christopher Chesniak and Kriger, Just after the start of the sec· ond lap, Hurd made the pass on Harrison for the lead in the comer preceding the huge Hurricane Hills step-up, relegating Harrison to second, Third through fifth remained unchanged. The top five quickly spread out and remained the same until the last lap, when Hurd crashed on the huge double in the middle of the racecourse, giving Harrison the lead and the first-moto win. Keefe inherited second, and Hurd managed to remount third. Chesniak and Kriger rounded out the top five. Harrison had another great start. in the final 85cc (12·13) moto, In tow off the start were Keefe, Chesniak, Kriger and Matt Vacendak. Hurd had bruised some ribs in his first-moto endo and decided to sit out the second moto, After 2 1/2 laps, the top two were unchanged, but Krieger had passed Chesniak to take third, Vacendak held fifth. The leaders spread out once again and remained the same to the checkered flag, The second moto's finishing order was Harrison, Keefe, Kriger, Chesniak and Vacendak, Dockray got his Yamaha out front and led the start of the first 125cc Amateur moto, Trailing him were Cook, Ryan Saum, Dan 62 APRIL 30. 2003' eye Hurricane Hills Sports Center: Jon Dockray (46) leads the start of the first 125cc Amateur moto at Hurricane Hills' season opener in Clifford, Pennsylvania, with Brian Cook (840), Ryan Saum (333), Dan Zabrowski (5Z) and George Narcum (360) in tow, I e Zabrowski and George Narcum, By the third turn, Cook had the lead, with Dockray, Zabrowski, Narcum and Carm Parri in tow. One long straightaway and a tum later, Dockray was back out front, while Cook had been relegated to second, Cook chased down Dockray for the next couple of laps and finally made the pass for the lead on lap three, Narcum was holding his own in third, while Dan's brother Walt Zabrowski had moved up to fourth, and David Rockafeller was fifth. Cook kept the point position for the rest of the moto, taking the checkers with a small advantage over Dockray. Rounding out the top five were Narcum, Walt. and Jim Ayres. Dan, who changed from a Honda CR 125 to a 250cc YZF Yamaha thumper for the 2003 season, led the pack through the first turn in the final 125cc Amateur moto, just ahead of Dockray, Ayres and Walt, A quarter of a lap later, the top five were Dan, Walt, Dockray, Cook and Rockafeller, Walt passed Dan for the lead on the finish-line triple at the start of lap two to take the lead. Half a lap later, Dan cross-rutted in the big sweeper turn by the start area, which let Dockray by for the runner-up position, Dan dropped to third. Ayres and Cook were still fourth and fifth, respectively. Walt was just flying out front and had an II-second lead by lap three, The top five were pretty well spread out by this point, and they remained unchanged to the check· ered flag, Walt finished the moto with a huge 14-second lead, Rounding out the top five were Dockray, Dan, Ayres and Cook, Hurricane Hills Sports Center CIiHord. K~lIn Grays Harbor County Fairgrounds Beach Whales on 'em at Elma ST Finale By SAM HALBERT ELMA, WA, MAR. 22 In the final race of the year at the tiny little short track in Elma, Washington, Sam Halbert came away the winner in the Open Money race, He got the holeshot and led every lap of the race, with Kyle Ragsdale giving chase, Jeff Hiatt ran third, holding off constant pressure from Jethro Halbert; it was close, but Hiatt wasn't about to give up the position. Matt McCoy rounded out the top five. One of the more controversial and hotly contested races of the night was the 250cc Modified main event, Chris Celorie pulled off a brilliant holeshot, with Dustin Pruczinski and Chris Williams giving chase. Pruczinski was pressuring Celorie. waiting for a mistake; Celorie made that mistake, running wide off of tum two, and Pruczinski seized the opportunity and made the pass, A few laps later, Williams hit the dirt, bringing out the red flag, On the single-file restart, Pruczinski got the lead but bailed on the next lap, getting up right away but in last place. Celorie inherited the lead, with Scott Baker in second and Kenan Duncan in third. Williams made his way from last to fourth. After much consideration, it was declared over when the red flag came out. Pruczinski was awarded the win, with Celorie in second and Duncan third. Gary Moore pulled off the holeshot and led every lap of the Over 30 class, John Parish was running second, with Larry Ward third. Ward passed Parish on lap three, but Parish returned the favor in the next corner. At the halfway point, Ward once again maneuvered past Parish and this time held it to the finish, At the start of the 80cc Modified race, Brad Baker jumped out to an early lead, but J,D. Beach was right alongside him. Beach was working the high line in perfect supercamp style, and in a couple laps he had the lead and the win, Brad finished second, and Williams worked his way up to third. In the eocc DTX class, Beach once again passed Brad for the win, but this time it was on the last lap, when Brad went around the outside of a fallen rider and Beach dived for the inside and made the pass. Turkey Gran Prix Pepper's On the Turkey By DAVID KwN TURKEY,TX,MAR,22 The annual Turkey Gran Prix attracted 164 riders, most of whom came out to ride the Turkey Enduro the following day, A whirling dust cloud could be seen miles away from the race, When the dust settled, the day belonged to Colorado hotshoe and former ISDE rider Kelby Pepper, Kelby made nine laps and won the Expert class by 49 seconds over Texan Rick Higgins, himself a former ISDE rider and multitime Texas State Enduro champion. Third overall went to another Texas rider, Chad Carlisle, who was only six seconds behind Higgins at the finish, Lee Upton finished fourth, and young Michael Bunn rounded out the top five, In the Over 30 class, Brad Craine ran away from his competition and was the only rider outside the Expert class to finish nine laps. That placed him ninth overall. Chad Haupin finished second, and five seconds back Wayne Intermill was third. Andy Kunz had a good ride, taking the Four-Stroke class by more than a minute ahead of second-placed Mark Atkins. Austin Wann was 35 seconds back in third. Twenty riders turned out for the Over 40 class, and Gordon Gobert rode off and hid from the pack, He led by two minutes and
