Northwest Vintage & Evolution Motocross Series Round 8: Woodland Motocross Park "Blues" and "Reds" Martin Manhandles Win April Fool's Gold 'em in the Mud By MIKE "SIR SMILEY" RYER PERRIS, CA, APR. 1 Round two of the Fire £, Police Motocross Nationals was held the day after round one. With a new day of racing came a new section of the track: A series of whoops was placed after a small table heading into the infield of the track. which used to be a brief 40-yard dash to yet another tabletop leading into a right·hand tum. Most riders didn't worry about this addition. The Riverside County Fire Department's Donald Upton was once again in charge of the 18-29 Expert class. as he swept both motos. Eric McKenna of the California Department of Corrections finished second in both motos while being chased by Vernon FD's Steve Coster in each moto. LACFD's Scott Nelson scored 7 ~4 finishes for fourth overall, ahead of CDCs Frank Sottile, who took the final topfive spot. CDC's Eric McKenna stormed to the front of the pack in both motos of the 30-39 Expert class. In moto one. LACFD's Ryan Chapin tried to make a move on the CR450·mounted McKenna, who kept his distance from Chapin and made him settle for second best. CCFD's Brent Bush took third place in moto one while trying to run from Chris Roberts of the LACFD and Steve Coster of the Vernon FD. who filled out the remaining top~five spots. Only two words need to be said about the Four-Stroke Expert race: Eric McKenna. The man was unstoppable, scoring 1 ~ 1 finishes to claim another gold medal. Chris Roberts picked up the runner~up spot with a 3~2 score after chasing Steve Coster in moto one. Coster finished third with 2-4 tally. Brent Bush garnered fourth place overall after Ryan Blackbum slipped to sixth in moto two for fifth overall. Don Rohmann of the CDC took the win in the 18~29 Intermediate class, leaving Chino PD's Alex Olteanu and Bruce Turnn of the CHP to flip for second and third; Olteanu took second with his 3·2 score. Rohmann was back for more in the 30-39 Intermediate class. but he placed second to Torrance FD's Scott Arnold. who nailed down a holeshot or two and ended up with a 1·1 dart from the pack for a gold medal. Rohmann finished second with his 3~4 score, ahead of West Covina PO's Todd Black (7-3) and David Gifford (2-8) of the Las Vegas PD. CDF"s Michael Zimmerman (1-3) traded places with SBSO's Brian Chambers (3-1) in Perris Raceway: Eric McKenna (219) took control early on in both motos of the 30-39 Expert class to grab the gold with a 1-1 finish at round two of the Fire & Police Motocross Nationals in Perris, California. overall Intermediate·class win, followed by Mark Baer and his 1969 CZ 360 sidepiper. Skiver and Canada's Ken Burningham placed one·two in the first Expert moto, although neither would finish in moto two. Another of the handful of AMA IT and flattrack veterans, Mike Harritt, walked away with a win in another of the largest classes of the day, the 250cc Evolution Amateur class. The Kawasaki~mounted Washingtonian, best known for his hot laps on the Northwest IT cjrcuit aboard his 750cc Yamaha. posted dual moto wins in the messy conditions. Maico rider John Daniels. a consistent top·three finisher throughout the series, used 2-2 performances to trail Harritt overall and maintain his chances of nabbing the class title with one round remaining. Oregon's Kurt Stevens has performed admirably in the Open Evolution Expert class all season long, winning the majority of the rounds, and he sits at the head of the class with one round remaining. Despite the sloppy conditions, Stevens scooped up yet another overall win on this day, via 1·1 placings. Blake Landon (2·2) thumped to second overall. trailed by Suzuki RM jockey Jay Lael (3-3). Honda jockey Christopher Del Aire was the top performer in the adjoined Intermediate class, acing it ahead of Maico riders James Conway and Marvin Newton. There's another Newton coming up through the ranks, this time in the competitive XR75 class. Mitchell Newton, who, along with his family, made the trek from central Oregon, took control of the points battle in the XR75 Amateur class with 1~ 1 finishes. James Bodkin finished second in the all~Honda field, and Chris Conway rounded out the top three. Jake Owens and Colton Bartlett traded mota wins in the Intermediate portion, with Bartlett's 2·1 tally earning him the overall win. Bartlett. Brandon Butler (3-2) and Owens (1-3) were the top three performers. Landon, who next season takes the helm of the Vintage Dirt club that has been led for many years by Monty and Ann Price, was a three·c1ass performer on this day. picking By CLAY LIGHT WOODLAND, WA, APR. 5 Yamaha~mounted Charlie Martin has churned out an endless streak of impressive overall wins throughout the Vintage Dirt·sanctioned Northwest Vintage & Evolution Motocross Series. and, despite the muddy conditions at Woodland Motocross Park, Martin's streak was extended. Riding a pair of 1980 Yamaha YZs. Martin sloshed to victories in the 125cc, 250cc and Over 40 Evolution Intermediate classes at the penultimate round of the series. Despite the threatening skies, most of the riders got in at least one good moto before the rain came down and turned the once-loamy course into a swamp. One of the day's largest classes was the 20-rider 125cc Vintage Amateur class. which was won by Honda rider Shannon Rinkus, who's been on a roll of late, scoring several overall wins in the class. Rob Hooker has also notched his name among the select few overall winners in the class this season; Hooker held on to post a moto·one win, but Rinkus took the lead on lap three of moto two and then won. Charlie Branstetke (4-5) netted third overall. There were surprisingly few DNFs in the class. Washington's Randy Skiver has been impressive all season tong. The Penton, Can~ Am and occasional BSA rider saw his long string of three~c1ass decimations come to an end when he went I·DNF in the Pre-1970 Expert class. The former AMA Grand National dirt-tracker's day wasn't all that bad, though. as he still came away with wins in the Over 50 and Four~Stroke Vintage Expert classes while piloting a BSA. Maico·mounted Heath Brisbie burned the competition in the Pre·1970 Amateur class, posting 1-1 wins, while Hodaka pilot Thai Anderson placed second via 2~2 placings. Garry Meads (3-3), Axel Anderson (5-4) and another of the many Hodaka riders in the field, Joe Kegley, rounded out the top five. Finishers were few in the Expert/Intermediate por~ tion.
