Florida Motocross Series Round 2: Motocross World 3. 65 BEG: 1. Nathan Beau~rd (Kaw); 2.. Kody Kl!tchwn (Cob); 3. Austin Cole (KTM); 4. Ryan BlIker (Sw:); 5. Corey Brown (KTM). Tiffany and Hall, Two Weeks Straight Bv CRAIG AND ANGElA JOHNSON BITHLO, FL, MAR. 30 The second round of the fifth annual Florida Motocross Series visited Motocross World, located in the central part of the state. Tyler Tiffany and Derek Hall had each won two classes at the first round, and they decided to repeat that feat at the second round. Tiffany dominated the Supermini and 85 (14-15) classes with four mota wins. Hall dominated the 65cc Open and 65cc (10- 1 J) classes, also with four mota wins. Also as at the first round, there was a threat of rain. A few sprinkles fell here and there, but nothing like at the first round. One thing that was different was the change in temperature; people wore shorts and T-shirts in the morning, but by the afternoon some had donned long pants and jackets. The racing was just as good as at the first round, and the cooler weather made it great for the competitors. Tiffany shot out into the lead in the first Supennini mota. Jesse Freeman held second until Matthew Burke passed him at the end of lap one. Tiffany pulled out a few bikelengths, and that was all he needed. Burke couldn't make up the distance, and Tiffany won by about one straightaway. Freeman had his hands full with Chris Pixley. The two stayed close the entire mota, each waiting for the other to make a mistake. Pixley finally found his opening on the last lap and got third place. Michael Smith moved up to fifth after a seventh-place start. Tiffany won the second moto, and the top four finished in the same order as in the first mota, Dalton Yingling moved around Smith to claim fifth. You could say that this was the Tyler Tiffany Show for the day, Tiffany lives in nearby Orlando, and this is his home track. The other 85cc (14-15) riders didn't have a chance, The Yamaha pilot won both motos, again over Burke, Joseph Vallee beat out Pixley both times out for the last podium spot. Gary Cavanagh came in fifth both times out. Hall had his own show going on in the 65cc classes. Hall was in a class all by himself, simply running away with the first 65cc (I 0-11) moto. Kyle Combee finished ahead of Taylor Franklin for second. Anthony Zaffino won the battle for fourth, over George Warren. The second mota was a repeat of the first for the top three. Warren did get the best of Zaffino for fourth overall. Franklin tried to challenge Hall in the 65cc Open class, but to no avail. Hall romped away to both moto wins. Franklin was second. Cody Smith moved around Darin Walker in the first moto for third and finished in the same spot in the second moto_ Walker was nowhere to be found in the second moto after placing fourth in the first one. Justin Morgan moved up to claim the position in the second mota. Hunter Harbin claimed fifth twice. One other person who won two classes on this day was Tony Gallardy. The Vet rider dominated the Over 40 class, beating out John Coleman in both motos. Third overali went to Rick Thorpe, with a 4-3 score. In the Over 35 class, Timothy Eggers ran away with the first moto. Gallardy and Eric Braun traded places a couple of times, with Gallardy getting the runner-up spot. In the second mota, Gallardy beat out Braun for the win and the overall victory. Don Schmelyn rounded out the top three with a 5-3 posting. The 65cc Beginner riders fought tooth and nail to decide the overall winner. Ryan Baker took the first-mota win, over Nathan Beauregard. Hector Roman Jr. and Kody Ketchum are now trying their hand at the 65cc machin· ery, and they finished third and fourth, respectively. Fifth went to Darin Walker. The second mota's finishing order was completely tossed around. Austin Cole played spoiler and won the mota. The overall was between Beauregard and Ketchum; Ketchum needed to pass Cole for the win and the overall but could not get the job done. Beauregard sat in third, hoping for the best, and came out the class winner on the day without winning a mota. Corey Brown and Hunter Baker rounded out the top five in the second mota, In the 50cc Oil-Injected Stock class, Tyler Oliver ran away with the lead until the late stages of the first moto. Christopher Salter put on a charge but came up a few seconds short. The two finished the same in the second mota, with Oliver keeping his two-race win streak intact. Tanner Ketchum followed the duo home in third each time out. Cory Smith and Justin Dennard traded fourth- and fifth-piace finishes, with Dennard getting fourth overall. Bv MIKE "SIR SMILEY" RVER PERRIS, CA, MAR. 31 This year's start to the Fire (, Police Motocross Nationals was a huge success, with more than 600 participating riders from firehouses near and far, and police departments downtown and abroad - including Canada! The first two rounds took place at Perris Raceway; rounds three and four are scheduled for October 13 and 14 at Glen Helen Raceway Park. For more info, visit www.FirePoliceMX.com. The Torrance Fire Department's Scott Amold battled with the San Bernardino Police Department's David Carlson in both motos of the 80cc Adult class and came away with a 1-1 win and a gold medal. Carlson put up a fight, but this was Arnold's day; he was in the zone and on the gas. Dave Gifford of the Las Vegas Metropolitan PD finished with a 3-3 taliy while trying to keep his sights on Carlson and Arnold. Richard Reynertson of the CDC had everyone else on lackdawn in the First·Timers Beginner class, as he pulled off the win in both motos for the gold. Cathedral City FD's Eric Hanser found a little more throttle in the second mota, advancing to a 3-2 score for second overall. Hanser banged bars with Kent Light (2-3) of the Huntington Beach PD, who finished third. Lee Bejar (5-4) and Torrance FD's Rick Van Tuyl (4-7) filled out the top five. Two words for Rudy Fleming: "000 RAH!" The USMC motocrosser took both mota wins aboard his KTM for the overall in the 35-39 Beginner class. Second place in moto one went to Bob Lyons of the LASD, who picked up a third in mota two for third overall. Tony Dowty (3-2) swapped moto finishes with Lyons to advance to a silver medal. Hunting· ton Beach FD's Kent Ught advanced to a 7-4 moto score for fourth overall after he, too, swapped moto finishes with fifth-overall finisher Robert Irvin (4-7) of the LAPD. Irvin won the raffle held after round two's event schedule and is now the proud owner of a trick, new XR50, courtesy of Bill at John Burr Cycles, and ZLT, who donated the custom graphiCS kit. Corona FD's Scott Wiedensohler won the first moto of the 18-24 Novice class before finishing in the runner-up spot in mota two, behind Riverside County CDF's Michael Zimmerman, who finished fourth in mota one. Wiedensohler held on to the overall, and Zimmerman finished in the runner-up spot, over Huntington Beach PD's Daniel Boldt, who finished third in both motos. LAPD teammates Kevin Karne and Dan Hadfield nailed the top two spots in the 35-39 Novice class. Kame finished with a 1- 1 sweep, and Hadfield finished 3-3 and picked up a spot thanks to Cathedral City FD's Paul Noden, who slipped to fourth in moto two after beating Hadfield in the first moto. Noden finished third, ahead of Mike Colvin (5-2) of the Chandler PD and CDC's John Sutherland (4-6). Darryl Goulet of the LACFD proved that "number two does try harder," as his 2-2 finishes in the 40-49 Novice division earned him the overall. Terry Luke of the SBCFD won the first moto but then finished third, behind Goulet, for second overall. Ron Hughes improved his day to a 5-1 tally to nudge himself into a top-three spot for a bronze medal. Rick Lindsey of the San Bemardino PD finished with a 3-6 score for fourth overall after finishing behind Allen Hanners (6-5) of the LVPD in moto two, Hanners finished fifth overall. Doug Goff of the USBP was on a manhunt while out in front of the Four-Stroke Beginner class on his way to double mota wins, over Rodger Owen (2-2) of the LASD and Ryan Wallace of the L.A. City FD, who finished third overall. Instead of Cops and Robbers, it was Fire· fighters and Cops in the Four-Stroke Novice class, as LACFD's Ron Hughes chased CHP's Bruce Turnn, who proved that sometimes they do get away. Jeff Carlson of the Santa Ana PD took both wins in the Bomber class as he flew over the big double jumps on his tank of a bike, while Dan Hadfield of the LAPD had the speed but wasn't hitting the "dubs." It wasn't until late in the second mota that he tried them; his success ended up helping him out at round two the following day. Third place went to Robert Cosner of the LAPD, who struggled in both motos with a third in mota one and a DNS in moto two to finish out the class. Perris Raceway Perris.
