At the checkered flag, it was Wathen taking the win, with Nelson just off the pace in second. Miller found a path around Mott out back to finish a strong third after a good ride, and Mott and Banbach rounded out the top five. Over on the little track. Seth Harnishfeger cranked up his KTM into high gear to take both mota wins in the 50cc Auto Junior class. Mitch Ostafin took runner-up honors in each moto, and while he couldn't match Harnishfeger's speed on this day, he has the speed to be a contender in the District 14 MX 50cc Auto Junior championship title chase this season. Austin Steinfeldt (3-3) took the last spot on the box with third overall, while Troy Blount (4-4) and Daniel Cutler (5-5) took care of the rest of the top five positions. Michigan Spring Fling Battle Creek Motorcycle Club Missouri Hare Scrambles Championship Series Round 3: Bixby Hare Scrambles Wathen Wild at Battle Creek Leivan Unwraps a Win By BART NEWMAN BATILE CREEK, MI, MAR. 30 The Battle Creek Motorcycle Club played host to the third Michjgan Spring Fling, and it was a good one. More than 200 riders braved the frozen tundra to lay down tracks on Michigan's second-oldest motorcycle-club facility. Jacob Wathen proved he had the hot hand on this cold day, taking a double-moto victory in the 85cc C class and laying claim to a generous portion of the contingencies put up by Kawasaki, Yamaha. Honda and Suzuki. Wathen went wild at the first drop of the gate for the 85cc C class, fioating down the long, fast BCMC starting area to grab the firstmoto holeshot. However. Jeremy Nelson, Aaron Mott, Dakota Miller and Josh Banbach weren't going to just lie down and give Wathen the win without a fight. Wathen led until the middle of lap two, and then a rut dropped him to the racing surface. Nelson, Mott and Miller fell victim to the same rut that Wathen was upside down in, which put all of the top four riders at a standstill. Nelson was the first to recover, burning in an escape route out of the rut to take over the lead. Wathen was the next to free himself, which then freed both Matt and Miller from the bottleneck. Wathen didn't like being in the runner-up spot, and soon he was showing Nelson a wheel in each corner, until a bold. sweeping move in the large bowl turn carried him past Nelson and back into first place. Wathen went on to finish the mota as its leader. Nelson finished up in second, and Mott came home third after a great battle with Miller, who then had an off-track excursion that relegated him to fifth, behind Banbach. Mott led the pack into turn one on the second go-around, but Wathen swung wide in tum two, gaining the speed he needed to jump the new tabletop and grab the lead. Wathen had taken a liking to leading the pack, and he wouldn't give up the lead for the remainder of the race. Mott began to feel pressure from Nelson, and by the end of lap two, Mott was By and do my best. My birthday is tomorrow, so J guess I gave myself an early present by Winning." The Missouri Trajl Riders Association laid out just over 12 miles of rocky trail on 650 acres near Bixby. Conditions were nearly perfect, and the 300 riders on hand were challenged by the loose rocks, ruts, mudholes, and grass-track sections. The top 45 riders completed four laps on the technical circuit, and Leivan averaged just over 22 mph. Holeshot artist Doug Stone put his Stonework 's Suspension/Donnells~backed CR250 into the lead at the start, and roundone winner Brandon Forrester and Chris Thiele got up to the front early as well. Despite starting his ride in 15th place, Leivan worked hard and made his way into fourth after a lap, just ahead of an AA rookie, Red Bull/EVSI Flatland Racing's Caleb Wohletz. and Team Green rider Chris Nesbitt. The top six riders were separated by just 10 seconds at the conclusion of lap one. FRANK LEIVAN BIXBY, MO, MAR. 30 For the third consecutive year, 10-time Missouri Hare Scrambles Champion Steve Leivan claimed his first win of the season in dramatic fashion - by going from last to first and not taking the lead until the final lap. This year, at round three of the series, Leivan and his SCR/Yamaha cut it very, very close. Leivan's WR250F didn't fire on the first kick, so after hitting the magic button to get under way, Leivan entered turn one at the back of the pack, but he put together a last-lap charge and took the lead with less than 30 seconds remaining in the two-hour-and-13-minute race. "I don't know what the deal is with doing it this way, but as long as I can end up with a winning result, it's okay with me." Leivan joked afterward. "I didn't utilize the benefits of my electric start too well, but I got into the top five pretty quick and just tried to hang in there .. y .. I e n e vw s APRIL 30, 2003 55
