NV, MAR. 23 Rain clouds hung around all day long at round five of the MX West Spring Series in Stead. Nevada. Only brief, occasional showers made an appearance, though, as the racing went on upon an aiready slippery Stead course. Heavy watering prior to the race made for beautiful ruts through many of the turns but turned some of the harder, faster sections to very slick ground. Nonetheless, many racers com· mented on the fun factor of the course, which has steadily grown under the ongoing efforts of Stead's promoting 9rouP. Nevada Motocross Development. Gardnerville's Kenny Lash turned in the fastest laps of the day as he rode his Big Valley Honda·backed machines to win in both the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes. Lash has only recently returned to the ] 25cc ranks after rac· ing in the 250cc class exclusively aboard his CRF450 for some time. But it seemed the break from the I 25cc division had no slowing effect on him, as he went on to win both 125cc motos to match his additional 1-1 score in the 250cc class. YZ250Fs initially led both 125cc Pro motos, at the hands of Tommy Jean (in the first moto) and Ryan Manha (in the second). Both gave their best to keep Lash at bay. oniy to watch him slip by in the early stages. Jean and Manha did, however, hook up together in the second 125cc moto to battie it out for second overall. After Jean made an early pass on Manha, they stayed fairly close through the middle stages until Manha found the pace he needed to pass Jean for second overall late in the mota. Jean hung on for third place in the mota and on the day. The 250cc Pro class featured two more runaway wins by Lash. This, of course, gave him the biggest share of the day's purse, which was boosted by contributions from Tim Nobles of Race Photos, Mike Seeliger of www.saveoncycles.com and Bob Toomey of the Motomouth Mini Team. Their generosity was greatly appreciated by the Pros. This change has coincided with a boom in 60cc turnouts, which have flooded the new classes. Justin Scott and Zack Martinez claimed wins in their respective divisions of the 60cc Beginner class in Stead, while Ty Siminoe rode to the top of the 60cc Junior class. The 60cc Intermediate class featured battles among top 60cc pilots Weslee Valerio. Aaron Siminoe and Jake Maga. The riders finished in that order, but not without some position swapping that grabbed the attention of all those along the fence. This race fell past the halfway point on the schedule for the MXWest Spring Series. but the attendance and enthusiasm at the races has yet to drop from the high levels set early in the series. There are four rounds to go, and it can be expected that this series may carry its record· level success to the very end. "I maintained the fast pace until the last mile or so of trail, when they threw us into some of the tightest stuff I have ever ridden," said Leivan. The last mile of the course was within sight of a camp along the side of a mountain. The trail just went back and forth through briars and tight trees. "The last part of the trail was definitely the toughest," noted Drew Chandler. Most riders said that their arms got really pumped up and that they just couldn't do any· thing else through the last part of the race. The Si Ikoi ene/Scott/C larke/NG K/Fiatland Racing-backed Leivan only scored a five at the last check. while the rest of the AA field dropped nines. Leivan finished out the day with an awesome ride and the overall win, scoring nine total points. In second was hometown rider Eric Brewer, with 15. Steve Travis and Chandler tied with 17s, but Travis took third with tie breakers. Finishing in fifth overall was veteran Jim Ingram, who had a good ride on his new WR250F. PAM CARR COMBS. AR, MAR. 23 The slightly muddy opening round of the Black Jack Enduro Circuit was no challenge for six·time champion Steve Leivan. He took the win of the 29th annual White Rock Enduro. which was put on by the Razorback Riders Club. For the SCR Yamaha rider. it was just a "break-in day" for his new WR250F. "I had run the bike 10 minutes prior to the start," Leivan said. "I knew with the hours of preparation and the help of my sponsors that it wouid be ready." The first points-taking section for the AA riders was at check three, where Leivan, who was on row 46, took a 2: 12. The next rider closest to him was Eric Brewer, who dropped a 3:30. Honda rider Steve Travis and young~ ster Clinl Carr were both only seconds from dropping threes in that section. Carr feli hard in the section. "I never felt right all day after that crash," Carr admitted. This was the only real points·taking section for the first 45 miles. Leivan got a flat front tire at mile J 5 and decided he needed to change the tire at the reset at the end of short course. After the reset between the short course and the long course, the riders had a 28-mile loop to complete at an average of 24 mph. The long course had no resets, and so it was basically a mini hare scrambles. The start of the second loop was a known control and was located where the start of the first loop had been - only this time, the trails veered off the short-course loop soon after the start, and they got a lot tighter. Most riders zeroed the first section on the long·course loop, except for the riders who made it to the known control late and just stacked up points to the finish. On the next section of the trail, it got a little harder for the riders to stay on time, causing them to drop the second-biggest amount of their points. With Leivan once again dropping the lowest amount of points in this section, he scored a 2. The rest of the field dropped fours and fives throu9hout the section. For the next couple of miles after that section, the riders were presented with some fire roads. to let them catch up a little bit. However. for the last five miles of the race, the trail got a little tighter and more rocky. This caused the riders to lose the time that they had just gained back. Leivan saw that this was his time to realiy shine. and he hammered the gas. cue I • White Rock Enduro Combs. Arkansas Results: March 23, 2003 (Round 1) O{A; I. Steve Lelvlln (Yam): 2.
