Beebe Sets His Sights on a Win TURLOCK, CA, MAR. 22-23 Pee Wee pilot David Beebe set his cross hairs on the checkered flag and fired off a win in the 50cc (7-8) Main Track class at the opening round of the 2003 AMP Spring Series. The series, presented by Swift Auto World, Vamaha of Modesto and DH Cycles of Modesto, kicked off at the Oatfield Raceway, and although Saturday's racing was held under perfect conditions, Sundays venue was a dif· ferent story. Unexpected rains hit the area just as the first practices got under way, and while the conditions for the first few motos weren't too bad, things steadily got worse. Some loved it; some hated it. "We are usually pretty good about canceling if rain is a threat," said AMP's Corky Azevedo, "but the forecast showed the system staying north of us, and by the time it started raining, most of the people were already here," Therefore, the decision was made to run a one-moto format for the day. As for the kids, hey, Dad would take care of the bike, and what could be more fun for a kid than to go play in the mud with Mom and Dad actually urging him on? Armed with his trusty Cobra, Beebe took on a seven-rider field in the 50cc (7-8) Main Track class and promptly made his way to the front. Conditions were especially tough for the little guys, as some pretty deep ruts developed on the big track. However, R.J. Mendez, from the coastal city of Salinas, was no stranger to wet conditions, and he gave Beebe a run for it, taking over the lead on the second lap. It then became a matter of who could stay up on two wheels, as the parents braved the ankle-deep mud to rescue their fallen warriors. At the checkers, it was Beebe first, followed by Mendez, Derek Bee, Connor Pearson and Gunnar Sigler. In the 50cc (4-6) Main Track class, only two riders braved the elements. J.T. Blattman earned the bragging rights aboard his KTM Pro Junior. Polini pilot Derick Silva gave chase and did his best balancing act for the second spot. Over on the Pee Wee track, conditions were a lot less threatening, as the track prep is much tamer, resulting in much smaller ruts and mudholes. In addition, the jumps and whoop section are made just for the little guys. Oatfield Raceway: Cobra tamer David Beebe gunned down the competition in the SOcc (7-8) Main Track class at the opening round of the AMP Spring Series in Turlock, Californla_ 46 APRIL 30. 2003' cue I e Oatfield Raceway Turlock. AMP Spring Series Round 1: Oatfield Raceway Bv JIM AND JUSTIN ENOS Beebe set off to try to take another win in the 50cc (7-8) Pee Wee Track class, against many of the same players. However, Mendez was out to play spoiler, and he shot out into the lead. Beebe, Sigler, Pearson and Jacob Becvar all gave chase in the four-lap affair, but Mendez was on his game and left the rac· ing behind him, takjng the win with room to spare. Beebe held on for second, while Sigler and Pearson went at it for the third spot. Sigler, on a KTM, held off the challenge, just edging out Pearson at the checkers. Becvar rounded out the top five. Connor Mitchell, who came all the way from Oregon City, was also a rider who showed he was no stranger to the wet stuff. Aboard a Cobra, Mitchell bested the field in the 50cc (4-6) Pee Wee Track class, taking a dominating win over Blattman, Kyle Greener and Derick Silva. n e _ so 50 (7·8) MOD: I Derek Bee (Pol). 50 (0-8) OPEN: l.
