By MARK BUCHANAN Los Angeles County Raceway: David Simon receives the checkered flag for one of his three (out of four) moto wins and the overall in the Over 40 Experts class at round two of the International Old-Timers Association Race Series in Palmdale, California. International Old-Timers Association Race Series Round 2: Los Angeles County Raceway Old-Timers Tackle Desert Storm By GENE HIGGINBOTHAM PALMDALE, CA, MAR. 15- 16 Los Angeles County Raceway. considered by most to be located in the desert, was the site of a real "sandy mud" race. A beautifully prepared track became a challenge to ride as rain began pouring during practice and continued as the day progressed. The third mota of the normal three scheduled for Saturday was canceled in the interest of safety, although no rider was hurt enough to be transported to a medical facility. Without exception, every rider asked declared he "had a ball" - including this reporter, who hates mud. Jeff Hawthorne - president of the Los Angeles Chapter, which was hosting the event - handled the program admirably under the circumstances and canceled the third moto only after conferring with representatives of the chapters present. His army of volunteers, including flaggers, kept working regardless of the conditions. Saturday night at the track was a real experience. About four inches of rain reportedly hit the Southern California area' it seemed like it all hit in Palmdale. It was 'no surprise on Sunday morning to look out and see several lakes instead of a track. One poor rider picked a low spot in which to park his rig and woke up to find two feet of water around his whole pit area. Some riders just packed it up and left, but the determined L.A. Chapter declared that there would be a race. Those who left missed out on probably the best racing ever. After a delay of about an hour, the expert track-prep crew had bulldozed the water off of the low areas, and by the first moto, conditions were perfect. The Over 40 Experts were dominated by Riverside rider David Simon, on a Yamaha. Simon, who probably considers LACR his home track, apparently was not bothered by the downpour; he took two firsts on Saturday and a first and a second on Sunday. A fierce battle for second-place honors took place between L.A.'s Gary Connors and Central Valley's Robert Marks, both on Yamahas. One point separated the two before the final moto on Sunday, with Connors having the edge. Marks reached down deep for that extra punch and managed to win the moto and the edge necessary for second overall. The Over 50 Experts were once again in hot competition. Jerry Winkel bauer from Sierra took the overall win. Rocky Mountain rider Edgar Periton and Oregon's Jimmy Harris completed the top three overall. Steady riding by Winkelbauer earned him his first overall win as an Expert. The Over 50 Novices have a new competi· tor to look out for. KTM rider Les Oldenbrook from L.A. realiy put it to the rest of the class on both days. Rain and all, he took the checkers first in all four motos for a perfect score. Consistently close behind him were Riverside's Morrow Fleet and L.A.'s Fred Kilmick, taking seconds and thirds for the second- and third-overall positions. Oldenbrook looked very strong, and it appears he will be gunning for the points lead in the series very soon. The Over 50 Amateurs had a very large class, with probably the most diverse chapter representation. Eight of the 13 chapters were represented in this one class. Jeff Kissinger from Washington was considered questionable as a starter at the beginning of practice; he had a badly swollen finger that really looked ugly, the result of an accident at work. Even though it was his throttle hand, it made no difference; he had it wide open all day, and with a third and three moto wins, he took the overall. It may be significant, considering the weather, that Kissinger, who's from Washing· ton, and J.R. Meusling and James Peterson, who are both from Oregon, took the top three spots. By comparison, the riders from the southern chapters did not do as well. Asker Larnkjaer, despite body-part replacements (Le.: his hip), continues to be the eternal optimist and is on the line at every race. Even when the track looked so bad on Sunday morning, Larnkjaer had nothing but good things to say and even predicted dust before noon. He was right. The Over 70 Experts were the first race on Sunday, and the track was great. By the first race in the second round, there was dust. Max Goode, from the Sierra chapter, loved the conditions and had a perfect score for the weekend. Fred Sessions, representing the Arizona chapter, had a little trouble on Saturday; he placed fifth in the first moto but settled down with steady seconds for second overall. Finally, Gene "Higgi" Higginbotham overcame the doubles and the mud for consistent thirds and fourths for third overall. CHARLESTOWN, IN, MAR. 22 The weather was perfect for March, with sunny skies and warm temperatures for the 157 riders on hand at the Podium One Motoplex in Charlestown, Indiana, site of round five of the Podium One Gold Series. New track owners Jay and Kathy Squire had the track in great shape for the second weekend in a row, and once again they did a great job of putting on the event. T.J. Blake had a great day, easily taking all four mota wins of the I 25cc A and 250cc A classes on his Suspension Works/Finish Line motorcycles. Blake took the holeshot and went wire to wire in both 250cc A motos, in front of Yamaha· mounted Nicholas Wolfe and Outback Steak House KTM rider Steve Banet. Blake also nailed the holeshot for wire-to-wire wins in both motos of the 125A class. Rodney Carrier finished a strong second in each moto on a Suspension Plus/Diamond Billiards Yamaha, followed by Wolfe. Carrier easily took all four moto wins of the Over 25 A and Over 30 A classes, in front of Honda rider Richard Farmer, and Yamahamounted Lowell Manson took all four moto wins of the Over 25 B and Over 30 B classes. Ralph Stillwell finished second in each mota of the Over 25 B class, and Yamaha-mounted Mark Guelda took second place in the Over 30 B class with a 2-3 tally, in front of Stiilwell and KTM rider David Gordon. Honda rider Jeremy Bradley took both mota wins of the 250cc B class, in front of Gary Hethcox, on a Paul's Cycle Supply/ Bremm Vinyl Graphics Suzuki. Matt Blake took both mota wins in the 250cc C class in front of fellow Yamaha pilot Steve Pierson. Justin Carothers finished third on a Max Pitts Yamaha. followed by Yamaha jockey Jared Chastain and Honda rider Steve Carpenter. Steven Doyen took both wins in the J 25cc C class on a MotoXtremes/SoCal Racing Kawasaki. in front of Yamaha rider Ross Murphy. Yamaha rider Roger Crew finished third in each mota, and Yamaha pilot Zach Miles claimed fourth place with a 6-4 tally, in front of Husky man Alan Smith (5-5). 1-----------------------------....---=---, z ;; « :I: tJ 15 '" « --_.--- --- cr " '" >- 5 :I: "- Los Angeles County Raceway Palmdale.
