Instead of looking forward, Carlson began looking back as Wheeler burst upon the scene with renewed vigor. With all his first-mota ills behind him, Wheeler began turning lap times close to Hughes' as he closed in on Dubach. When the white flag waved, Hughes had it locked up with a 15-second lead, but Wheeler was badgering Dubach. When the two came down the face of Mount Shoei, Dubach tried to maneuver himself into Wheeler's line to set a block. Instead, Wheeler zigged when Dubach zagged and snatched the runner-up spot. Decker made it up in the field far enough to pass Carlson on the last lap for fourth, and Corder came home sixth. "Riding my own race made it easier," Hughes said. "I'm going to ride the 125cc Nationals against Bubba [Stewart], so I have to stay smooth and focused." Dubach, on the podium in the runner-up spot - as he was in 2001, with Hughes winning that race as well said, "I'm going to have to find a vacation spot for this guy to go to ...
