CMC Northwest Spring/Summer Series Central Oregon Motocross Series Rounds 1/3: Madras Motocross STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY LIGHT MADRAS, OR, APR. 5-6 TM America-supported Rory SuII.['\,. livan stormed into Madras Motocross like an Old West gunfighter. It was the opening round of the CMC Northwest Spring/Summer Series, and when the smoke and dust had cleared, the rider from Estacada, Oregon, had garnered wins in the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes at the race, which doubled as round three of the Central Oregon Motocross Series. Despite being the lone Professional rider on hand, Sullivan did have plenty of tough competition from other riders from out of the area, namely Honda jockey Ryan Huege. The 16-year-old Huege stayed close to Sullivan in a couple of motos, even edging Sullivan in the second 125cc Pro/Intermediate moto on Saturday after Sullivan stalled and mounted a valiant charge to pull even with Huege, one of the state's top Intermediate riders. Things improved drastically for Sullivan on Sunday, as the veteran of AMA Four-Stroke National competition easily outdistanced large fields of riders again in both classes to cap off his sweep of the weekend. In what was a rare high-desert appearance for the rider who will soon be contesting the Canadian Nationals, Sullivan got the holeshot in every moto on Sunday and, in the case of the second 250cc Pro/Intermediate moto, gained as much as a 12-second lead on Huege. However, Huege was also impressive, posting the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate wins on both days. Fresh on the comeback trail after a serious injury in November, Huege rw Rory Sullivan was the dominant performer in the Professional ranks at the opening round of the CMC Northwest Spring/Summer Motocross Series, posting overall wins in the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes on both days. appeared determined in several motos, including a pair of slugfests with local Yamaha YZ450F rider Danny Costa. Though Costa stayed glued to Huege's rear fender for much of both 250cc Intermediate motos on Sunday, in the end Huege prevailed to notch his fourth overall win of the weekend. Honda-mounted Ben Hurlburt also had a spectacular weekend. The Honda CRF450R pilot pounded the competition en route to the Over 30 and 250cc Junior wins on Saturday. Former AMA National and Supercross regular Nev Laborde was on hand on Saturday, and he did all he could to drop Hurlburt to runner-up, but Hurlburt carded the overall win, despite losing in moto two to Patrick Trowbridge. However, Trowbridge snapped Hurlburt's win streak with an Over 30 Pro-class win on Sunday. Ryan Huege soared to wins in the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate classes at Madras Motocross. 54 APRIL 23, 2003' c u e I e n e VII' Sf Laborde's weekend wasn't a total wash, though, as he would later dominate one of the day's largest classes, the 125cc Junior class. Suzuki-mounted brothers Ben and Blake Anglen have dominated the Supermini and 80cc Age Group classes thus far in the series, with the exception of round two, when the DeAtley brothers were on hand. Blake topped both Supermini motos on Saturday, while Ben finished the day with a 2-DNF tally after mechanical problems shut him down; Yamaha rider Tyler Schwentker garnered second overall with consistent 3-3 placings, followed by Nathan Teel (2-4), Dustin Steward (5-5) and Eathyn Wilson (4-6). On Sunday, the brothers from Culver, Oregon, were down to one bike, so their dad, Rob, was forced to split them up in order to salvage seat time. This time, Ben dominated the Supermini class, and Blake copped an 80cc (12-13) class win. Ben's dual Supermini class wins came by large margins; he topped the second moto by a whopping 21 seconds ahead of Tyler Riehl. Riehl, Schwentker and Teel spent most of moto two banging bars, but in the end it was Riehl who netted second place. Another impressive performer was KTM-mounted Austin Ullrich, who overcame midpack starts in the 60cc Senior class on both days to sweep the weekend. He also dominated the 60cc Open class. Fast-starting Jeremy Steward and another of the many KTM riders on hand, Kyle Ulrich, gave Ullrich plenty of competition in both classes, although the diminutive duo trailed Ullrich in all eight motos. Chris Alldredge, who hails from nearby Redmond, Oregon, rode at a rapid pace and dominated the Pee Wee (7-8) and 50cc Open classes. On his trusty Cobra, Alldredge won seven of his eight motos in the two classes, losing out only to local rider Cory Paterson in the first Pee Wee (7-8) moto on Sunday. Paterson and Alldredge went head to head in the 60cc Junior class on both days, but it was Alldredge who scored overall wins in the class to post an amazing six overall wins on the weekend.
