Joey Lanza got the holeshot in the 250cc race. Willy Simons won the Over-30 250cc Expert and Over-40 250c~Expert classes. had a huge lead - I never saw them. I thought we were closing the gap on one lap, but they were impossible to catch." News quickly traveled that Sheak was out on the course with a seized bike. "About halfway through the last lap, I was going down the long pavement section about three-quarter throttle," recounted Sheak, who recently signed with Team Green. "I was taking it easy because we had such a big lead. I went into the dirt section and let off the throttle just a ·Iittle, and the bike just seized up. I would have liked to have won it for Kawasaki because the bike ran really great. " Team Green-mounted riders Mike Childress and Morgan Crawford finished second, and the Paul Krause/ Larry Roeseler team rounded out the podium in third. The Krause/Roeseler team gave the spectators some great racing action aboard their FMF KTM as they worked their way through the pack after an 11 th-place start. When they realized they had also finished a place ahead of where they thought they were, Roeseler said, "A race like this, its not over until it's over - one and a half hours is a long time. That's the difference between a 20-minute moto and an off-road race - things start happening." Willy Simons showed up to this Wild West Grand Prix with both barrels blazing as he dominated the Over-40 250cc Expert class on Saturday afternoon and the Over-30 250cc Expert class on Sunday. Simons grabbed the holeshot on his Racers Edge/Sinisalo/San Ven,tura Roofing Yamaha for the 250cc line on Sunday and was never threatened during the entire race. He finished second overall behind Larry Roeseler, who started a row ahead of l1im on the 40+ Open Expert line. "This is one of the best tracks in the entire Big 6 Series," Simons said. Simons dominated the Over-30 250cc Expert line on Sunday. too, by taking the in-class win and finishing third overall behind Johnny Campbell and Paul Krause, who finished first and second, respectively, in the Over-30 Open Expert division. Simons rounded the weekend out with a second in Four-Stroke Expert behind American Honda's Johnny Campbell. Both riders bumped up a position when race leader Steve Hengeveld ran out of gas about a half-mile from the finish. Chris Blais took third aboard his Mid Cities Honda. Other top finishers for the weekend included Joey Lanza, who won the 250 and 200cc Expert classes on his FMF /Maxxis/GPR KTMs ahead of Morgan Crawford, who finished second in both races. Ryan Abbotoye led from start to finish in the 250cc Intermediate class on his Team Green KX250, and 17-year-old Andrew Vandenberg took top honors in the 0-200cc Intermediate class aboard his Mid Cities Honda CR 125. Yamaha jockey Matt Kearney claimed the first place prize in the Open Intermediate division. Series announcer Vinnie Mandzak finished first in the 50+ Open Novice class, and D.J. McGhee placed first in the 40+ Open Novice division. Every round of the FMF Big 6 GP Series is designed to have a signature event, and the Hilltoppers' event is the Unclassified Team race on Sunday morning. This year's race had 66 teams entered, which made for a freight-tra in effect in the riderexchange area. Mike Childress and Bo Harris powered their KX500 to the overall win, .foHowed by Brad and Brett Daugherty. The team of Ronnie Smith and Ron Aarup passed Max and Matt Eddy Jr. right before the checkers to take third. eN MINI BEG: 1. Kevin O'Donnell (Han); 2. Garrett Yeckley (KTM): 3. Blake Horton (Yam); 4.
