Thor/Parts Unlimited Northeast Classic Motocross Series Round 1: Doublin Gap Motocross Park RRP's Ty Wallace had a great day at the first round of the ThorlParts Unlimited Northeast Classic Series, winning both the 125cc A and 250cc Open A classes. STORV AND PHOTS BV JIM P. SANDERSON NEWBQRG,PA,MAR.23 he Thor/Parts Unlimited Northeast Classic Motocross Series, celebrating its 11 th year, is the premier motocross series of the Northeast. Round one is one the earliest events on the AMA District 6 calendar. Just two weeks prior, the Northeast still had quite a bit of snow. More than 700 of the best motocross riders in the Northeast and beyond made the trek to Newburg, Pennsylvania. With over $229,000 dollars in factory contingency available for 2003, the competition will surely be fierce. The Yentzer family, promoters of the superfast and extremely technical Doublin Gap Motocross Park, did a great job preparing the racecourse. RRP's Ty Wallace, AMA National number 85, walloped the competition in the 125cc and 250cc Open A classes, winning the overall, a nice chunk of change, and the series points lead in both classes. Wallace carded 2-1 finishes in both classes, and he also finished third overall in the Over 25 A class with a 5-2 score. Bromley Suzuki's Barry Carsten led the pack of 37 riders out of the first turn in the first 250cc Open A moto. In tow were Shenandoah Honda's Tom Welch, Barry Taggert Jr., and Yamaha of Camp HiJl's Jeremy Cook. After half a lap, the topfive running order had changed considerably: Welch was out front, followed by Crossroad Powers ports' Damien Plotts, Wallace, Carsten and Jeremy Tiffany. Plotts was right on Welch's rear wheel by the start of lap two, and he made the pass for the lead by doing the triple just before the Expert-only section while Welch only doubled the obstacle. Wallace and Carsten were still third and fourth, and Kevin Brodsky Jr. moved up to fifth. Plotts and Welch quickly separated themselves from the pack; there was a huge gap back to Wallace, in third. Plotts had a four-second lead by the last lap. Welch made a mistake just a short distance from the finish line, allowing Wallace and Carsten by. Plotts won the first moto, with Wallace, Carsten, Welch and Cook trailing. (Below) Damien Plotts (46) leads the start of the first Over 25 A moto at Doublin Gap MX Park, with Scott Sayres (335), John Young (22), Jason Palmer (73), Jim Mcilvaine (133) and Ty Wallace (85) in tow.
