Matt topped the 80cc (12·13) class on both days. STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLAY LIGHT MADRAS, OR, MAR. 22-23 iders from throughout the Northwest turned out in record numbers for round two of the Central Oregon Motocross Series, held at Madras Motocross. There were several dominant performers, but it was a pair of Suzuki riders who stood head and shoulders above the competition at the completion of the two days of racing on the high desert. Idaho's Sam DeAtley, one of the nation's top 80cc riders, posted runaway wins in the Supermini and 80cc Age Group divisions on both days, winning eight motos. Oregon's Adam Metzler was equally impressive. Having this year made the step up to the Intermediate ranks, Metzler walloped the competition in the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate classes on both days to share top laurels at the event, which doubled as the penultimate round of the 14-round CMC Northwest Winter Series. The younger of the two DeAtley brothers who made the trek from Lewiston, Idaho, Matt, also performed admirably, although he was overshadowed by his brother Sam, finishing runner-up in the Supermini class and winning the 80cc (12-13) class on both days. Southern Oregon rider Bradley Hillman was also among the weekend's elite, posting 60cc Senior and 80cc (9- 11) class wins on both days. The KTM-mounted Hillman was in a class by himself in the combined 60cc classes, putting large ground on the competition while taking his dual wins. Hillman had fellow KTM rider Jeremy Steward to deal with on Saturday, although Steward couldn't match Hillman's pace and finished second overall. Steward got the holeshot in the second moto on Sunday, but Hillman quickly swept past and capped off his weekend sweep of the class. Kawasaki rider Julian Doane netted second-place R 50 APRIL 1 6. 2003· eye • (Above right) Adam Metzler scored wins In the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate classes on both days of racing at round two of the Central Oregon Motocross Series. laurels to Hillman, followed by Austin Ulrich. Sam DeAtley's first of four overall wins came in Saturday's Supermini class, though Matt got the best of his older brother on the start. However. it didn't take Sam long to take the lead in both motos and put as much as eight seconds on Matt and Suzukimounted local rider Ben Anglen. Sam (1-1), Matt (2-2) and Anglen (3-3) were the cream of the crop in the class, while Hillman (4-4) and Kamrin Neilsen (6-5) filled out the top five overall. Sam also controlled the 80cc age group, topping the 14-16 class, ahead of Matt, who won the 9- 11 class, and Ben Anglen, who trailed Sam in the 14- 16 class. Sam used his 100cc Suzuki Supermini-class mount to grab the lead in the first 125cc Intermediate moto, but he quickly found out just how competitive that class is. Metzler trailed Sam for part of the opening lap before soaring past the diminutive speedster and maintaining the lead to the finish. Sam finished a close second, while Nathan Whitlow, the top Junior rider in a field of 17 riders, trailed the Intermediates. Moto two was much the same, as Metzler dominated from the get-go to the checkered flag; Sam followed Metzler to finish second, and Whitlow finalized a 1-1 sweep of the Junior class. On Sunday, Metzler was again the top dog in the Intermediate classes, despite being challenged by several top Northwest riders. Yamaha-mounte n e vv s ed Nick Clarno finished a close second to Metzler in the first 250cc Intermediate moto, followed by local YZF pilot Danny Costa and Honda CRF450R jockey Guy Tow. Moto two was again Metzler's for the taking, while Tow was impressive in taking his second-place finish. Clarno, who was involved in a first-turn pileup, forged through the pack to finish third, which was good for second overall, ahead of Tow (4-2), Costa (3-4) and Raym Conkey (5-5). Metzler also prevailed in the 125cc Intermediate class, although he had Sam to deal with in the first moto. Sam again stayed within striking range of Metzler, but Metzler again handily won. Sam got the jump on the field in moto two, but Metzler would have none of that and shoved the 14-year-old out of the way (and over the berm, for that matter). It was all Metzler to the finish, finalizing an impressive weekend for the Hillsboro Motorcycles/Thor ISm ith - bac ked 15-year-old. Yamaha rider Ross Miller finished a close second to Metzler in moto two, which was good for second overall. An unusually large Four-Stroke class featured a full gate of riders. The impressive Tow finished third in moto one, behind a fine performance by Beginner rider Erik Meusling and fellow Intermediate rider Costa. Then Tow came back to win moto two convincingly and take the overall, trailed by Miller and Costa; Costa finished second overall (2-3), ahead of Miller (5-2), Meusling (1-6) and Clarno (4-4).
