Jocob M.Ttln (Yom): n e _ s Sean Hamblin finally has his 250cc starts down pat, as he proved by grabbing the holeshot at the start of his heat race - stuffing his RM250 inside the YZ250 of Chad Reed in the first tum. The Yamaha teamster got by Hamblin pretty qUickly to move into the lead, only for Hamblin to keep him honest for a good many of the eight scheduled laps. Hamblin didn't start falling behind until a little after halfway, when Reed led by about three seconds. Reed continued to pull away until the end, winning by a little over nine seconds as Hamblin settled for second and a direct transfer to the main event. Emesto Fonseca chased down Nick Wey for third, though Wey stayed right with him to the finish, some distance behind Hamblin and Reed. "Confidence is always good for anybody, and it can be a dangerous thing, so I definitely want to keep it on my side," Reed said from the podium. Heat two was controlled from start to finish by Honda's Ricky Carmichael, which had many wondering who had the fastest heat race when all was said and done - and that honor went to Reed, by less than a second and a half. Clark Stiles ran second in the beginning of the race, though he eventually gave way to MotoXXX teammate Larry Ward and Heath Voss. All the battling for second left Carmichael to run out front all by himself, and he eventually won by 23.867 seconds. "I'm just going to go out there and worry about myself and try to have fun and do the best that I can do," Carmichael said. "The hoIeshot was awesome, and 1need to do that in the main.' Subway's Jason Thomas led the first semi early, although Keith R. Johnson made his way by before the end of the second lap and moved on to win his first-ever supercross race. "I really wanted this so bad, I can't even explain it,' Johnson said. "I'v., bO!en doing this sinc., '99, and I've n.,ver ev.,n been on the podium for an LCQ or th., Rac.,r X Gas Card or anything, so... • Team Solitaire's Ryan Clark worked his way through a slew of Subway Hondas for second, followed by the entire Subway team - Thomas, Joe Oehlhof and Ted Campbell • who all qualified. Th., winning move in the second semi happened on lap two. As holeshot artist Matt Maximoff bobbled in the whoops, Greg Schnell started to move past. At that same moment, however, Tyler Evans came blaZing past both of them and stole the lead. Evans moved on for the win, while Maximoff fell out of the top five. Schnell held on for second, while AX champ Josh Demuth climbed up to third by the finish. Also qualifying were James Povolny Jr. and Jimmy Wilson. ReMax Yamaha's Casey Lytle led the entire LCQ, and qualifying behind him was Brian Mason.
