" J cycle Safety Foundation will be conducting a Youth Demo ride on Sunday, October 5, in the Horse Show Arena, the same arena the K&N Filters Short Track National will be held the night before, during the K&N Filters Del Mar Motorcycle Weekend, The Youth Demo is an opportunity for children ages 6 to 12 to ride a dirt bike in a safe and controlled environment. Using Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki motorcycles and suiting up in Thor motocross gear, the participants will receive riding instructions from certified Motorcycle Safety Foundation DirtBike School coaches, Participation is free with paid admission to the races, Participants must know how to ride a bicycle, and a parent or legal guardian must be present. All safety gear will be provided, "Clear Channel Entertainment produces many of the premier motorcycle events in the United States," said Robert Gladden, OHV Program Manager for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, "To have the opportunity to be a part of the K&N Del Mar Mile weekend is an honor for the MSF DirtBike School. With our Youth Demo Ride now a part of the event, we look forward to giving many kids a memory that will last a lifetime." Keeping safety in mind, the event will be conducted around the short track oval with tuff blocks placed as a safety barrier. Each participant will receive a Polaroid photo of himself or herself riding, along with an MSF DirtBike School brochure. "As the world's largest producer of motorcycle events, we are extremely pleased to work with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation in creating opportunities to provide a safe environment to teach our youth the great sport of motorcycling," said Mike Kidd, V.P. of Clear Channel Motor Sports. Nicky Hayden is the latest rider to join the web craze with the launch of www.nickyhayden.com. "My fans, some of them have been on me the last couple of years about getting on the Internet," Hayden said at Suzuka. "It's about time that I picked up on it." The website has photos, both old and new, merchandise, links to his sponsors, and music, as well as some racing information. Hayden said that the emphasis was on lifestyle, more than racing. "There are plenty of places you can go and read about results," Hayden said. Fans will also be able to leave messages, but, because o o o Two-time Daytona 200 winner Ben Campanale died on March 30 in Worcester, Massachusetts. He was 88. Campanale was one of the top racers in New England during the mid-1930s. He made a name for himself nationally by becoming the first two-time winner of the Daytona 200, winning the classic event in 1938 and 1939. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, on September 19, 1914, Campanale entered his first race, the national championship IT in Keene, New Hampshire at the age of 19. "I just went up, paid my one dollar AMA membership fee and was ready to race: said Campanale in his Hall of Fame bio_ "Things were a lot simpler in those days. E.C. Smith looked at the old rig I had and just sort of grinned. I'm sure it was quite a picture with me. no racing experience. and riding this old worn-down street bike." From there, Campanale went on to establish quite a reputation by winning regional IT and billclirnbing championships in New England. In 1938, Campanale went to Daytona Beach, Florida, to take a shot at racing in the 200. He came away with the the victory. The next year Campanale returned but was no longer the underdog as he was aboard a factory Harley-Davidson. Campanale went on to win the race to become its first two-time winner. In order to make extra money during his racing days, Campanale did stunt riding. according to his Hall of Fame biography. His bestknown stunt was crashing through a wall of wooden boards. He gave up stunt riding when he once had to use fresh wood and the boards didn't give way when he hit them. Campanale survived one of the worst motorcycle racing crashes of all time at Oakland, Califomia. in 1941. Tommy Hayes went down at a high rate of speed during the running of the Oakland 200. Campanale was forced to hit the outside fence to miss the downed Hayes. In all, 10 riders were involved in the crash, and Hayes and June McCall died. He and Jim Kelly were both hospitalized for months. Campanale he's constantly on the road, Hayden won't be able to respond. "Me being over here, I won't be able to answer them," he said. The site, which is being administered by a Hollywood entertainment company, will be frequently updated. "I hope the fans can learn something about me and enjoy it," he said. Corona Extra Suzuki has announced that it will be partnering with Yoshimura Research and Development for the 2003 AMA Superbike Season. Corona Extra Suzuki will work closely with Yoshimura R&D to promote the Yoshimura brand at the racetrack and in the nationwide retail promotions being undertaken by the team in conjunction with Corona Extra, according to a release issued by the Corona team. Yoshimura R&D marketing vice president Brant Russell said, "Yoshimura is excited to be working with Corona Extra Suzuki and Corona Extra to promote our products and capability. They have a very exciting and winning program, and we want to be part of their continued success both on the race track and beyond." Corona Extra said the doctors gave him less than a 50-50 chance to live after the crash, and his wife, Anna, was so shaken by the incident. she never attended another race, Because of his injuries, Campanale was never drafted during World War II. Campanale came back after the war and resumed his racing career and won several AMA Pacific Coast titles. He also moved to Califomia and opened a Harley-Davidson dealership in Pomona. Campanale moved back to his hometown last year to be with his family. At the time of his death, he was the oldest liVing Daytona 200 winner. " Products, Inc .. is recuperating from quadruple bypass surgery after suffering a heart attack at the vintage road races in Phoenix, Arizona, on March 30. After a six-hour surgery on April 1, Vaillancourt is in stable condition and gaining strength. He may remain in Phoenix for several weeks before returning to Southern California for rehabilitation. According to sources at Works, "Gil must be feeling pretty good, because he's complaining that there is nothing to watch on TV." While on the subject of the Corona Extra Suzuki team, Jimmy Moore and Jason Pridmore rode a pair of the team's DRZ450 Supermoto bikes at a race in Phoenix, Arizona, on March 30. It was the pair's first-ever time on Supermoto bikes. Pridmore ended up finishing ninth with Moore 16th in the Unlimited main event. In the 450 X class, Pridmore finished 11th, while Moore had a mechanical problem. Both classes were won by Freestyle legend Mike Metzger. Octagon Motorsports, the organizers of the FIM Superbike World Championship, has announced that it has signed a three-year merchandise license agreement with Firebrand Live. Official merchandising forms a integral part in the development of the Superbike brand and is in high demand by the championship's fan base, according to Octagon. "London-based Firebrand Live has contracted an significant client roster that is as impressive as it is diverse. With a strong music and popular events base, Firebrand Live delivers merchandise solutions for clients that include Cream, Party in the Park, Capital FM, Alanis Morrissette and Sophie Ellis Bextor," the release states. "We are very pleased to have concluded the agreement with Firebrand as our global merchandising partners for the championship.
