Mutant Motorsports/Concord Motorsports Spring Series Round 2: Carnegie SVRA White, Despite the Brown By RANDY HElM TRACY, CA, MAR. 16 Those in attendance at the second round of the Mutant Motorsports/Concord Motorsports Spring Series could have sworn that it was still winter. Just when everyone thought blue skies would be the norm for racing this series, Mother Nature once again let everyone know who's the boss. After ietting the track dry out all day Saturday. it looked perfect for Sunday's event. And it was· until just before practice was over. That's when the rain hit, and it didn't let up for several hours_ The muddy conditions made for some exciting racing. With the track getting extremely muddy, the races were changed to a single·moto format, to help reduce wear on the bikes and riders· not to mention to give a little relief to the lap checkers, who were trying to identify the numbers each time they crossed the finish line. This weekend proved to be extremely chal· lenging for some riders, while others found it to be extremely fun. T ·Lo White was one of the latter; he adapted to the mud quickly, scoring a win in the 60cc Beginner class and taking second in the 60cc (0-8) class. White also won the 60cc Dash For Cash, ending his day on high note. When the gate dropped for the 60cc Beginner moto. Anthony Rodriguez emerged as the early race leader, with Mark Braden, White and Freddie Bates following. The KTMmounted Rodriguez had a firm grip on the lead for three laps until he dropped out going into the fourth lap. Braden was the new leader, but it wasn't meant to be; White motored his Kawasaki past Braden with two laps to go. With the battle going on for the lead, Bates was still slipping and sliding in third place. There were quite a few riders stuck along the muddy track through which White had to maneuver, but he was up to the challenge, and he took the win. Braden, on his now· brown KTM, finished second, and Bates, on his brown Kawasaki, took third. The fourth spot went to Hayward's James Vega, who was on a KTM. When the racers lined up for the start of the 60cc (9· 11) class. it was pretty obvious who had raced earlier - just by looking at who the muddy riders were. At the start. Vega got out front, with Michael Fontana and White giving chase. Vega had a much better ride in this moto and kept his KTM upright and in the lead from start to finish. Meanwhile, White was inching up to the back fender of Fontana's KTM. Fontana held off White until lap three, when White found his way around and moved into second. From that point on, the top three remained the same until the finish. Shawn Murphy from San Jose. Califomia. also discovered that he has some mud-riding skills. Murphy rode the wheels off his Yamaha to take the win in the 80cc Novice class. Second went to Kawasaki jockey Jeremy Boyes of Benecia. The final podium spot went to Santiago Betancur, who hails from San Jose and was riding blue. In other 80cc racing, Suzuki jockey Luke Layton from Oakdale took home the Intermediate win. Second went to Robert Alquist, and his fellow Yamaha rider Michael Hales finished third. The 80cc Beginner wins went to Michael Parks in the first division and Brandon Fittro in the second division. Jeff Northrop and Tony Wolf were the weekend's Pro winners. Northrop also took home some extra money for winning the BigBike Dash For Cash. The Concord Motor· sports·backed Northrop put the National number·97 Kawasaki out front in the 250cc Pro class and never looked back. One wouldn't even know the track was muddy by watching Northrop rail. He hit all the jumps on every lap. making it look easy in the slippery condi· tions. Wolf was runner-up in the 250cc class, followed by Honda rider Buffaio Soito. The Yamaha-mounted Wolf later went on to take the win in the] 25cc Pro class. CCS Florida Region Moroso Motorsports Park Barnes Wins on Slicks in the Wet Pihokken. As they battled behind him, Bames made his getaway. McEnery made his move in tum 10, passed Pihokken on the outside, and took over second place. Martinez made his move around Pihokken shortly after that and then set to work on McEnery. Barnes was already two seconds ahead of second place when Martinez pulled alongside McEnery and showed him a wheel. Martinez took over second on the front straightaway, but he wasn't able to get away. The top three began to space apart from each other on the final lap, while Travis Pepin moved in on Pihokken to challenge him for fourth place. Pepin pulled around him as they worked their way through tum eight. Bames won the race, with Martinez well behind. McEnery, Pepin and Pihokken rounded out the top five. "Race 19 was going, and in the second lap, I said, 'Let's put slicks on,'" said Barnes of his decision to run slicks. "We put the tire warmers on for five minutes. I don't know if it did much good." "' entered the Shootout this morning, thinking. 'I've got a chance to get 10th and at ieast get my money back," McEnery said. who added, regarding his tire choice, "We thought about going with intermediate, and it might actually have been better because those things got really greasy at the end. I was close enough to see Barney, and he was a little crazy at times, but once he got it stood up, he could get the drive out of the turns. I went with full rains. and pretty much everybody did. except for Bamey. And - he's Barney. So he can run slicks." By LISA THEOBAlD WEST PAU-I BEACH, FL, MAR. 16 Michael Bames won the first race of the day, the GTO, after leading every lap. And he won the last race of the day, the Unlimited Grand Prix, despite being the only rider mounted on slicks on the wet road course. At the last minute, he chose to mount slicks on the Prieto Racing-sponsored GSX-R1000, while every other rider went with full rain tires. After the thunderstorm cleared away, some dry lines slowly started to appear. but the track was mostly wet for the final event of the day. At the start of the race, Jim Pihokken nailed the hoieshot and claimed the early lead. He quickly stretched out a 30-bikelength gap over second·placed Michael Rouleau, who was followed by Scott Ritchey and Bames. Bames quickly advanced through the field and moved up to second place. Dave McEnery was also maneuvering his RCS1 through traffic and was right behind Barnes at the end of lap one. Pihokken maintained his advantage until they reached the back straight, where Barnes pulled alongside him and took over the lead. McEnery was right there with them; the top three were separated by less than six bikeiengths. Then Marco Martinez, who had moved up through the field, turned the race into a four·way battle for the lead. On the next lap, Barnes hit the dry line down the back straightaway and stepped away from the pack. Martinez was working on passing McEnery, while McEnery was all over cycle n e vv s APRIL 16, 2003 65
