Moose Motorcycle Racing Association of Nort~ern Nevada Series Round 2: Blue Wing Dry Lake Johnson Stubborn at Jackass 100 By NICK "FACTORY" FAIN BLUE WING FLAT, NV, MAR. 15-16 Ryan Johnson overcame an almost deadiast start to take the overall win at the Tank Siappers MC's Jackass 100. Even though surrounding areas were drenched with rains the week prior to the race, the 52~mile, two~ loop scrambles course hardly received any moisture. Johnson stubbornly fought through heavy dust all day to claim his first win of the 2003 Moose Motorcycle Racing Association of Northern Nevada Series. Starting on an enormous dry lakebed, the bomb run was a drag race for about a mile on pavementlike dirt to the first corner near the edge of the lake. Nick Fain was the first to the corner, but he carried too much speed, allowing Dennjs Belingheri and Jason Alosi to slip through. After a short IT section on the hard lake surface, the racers headed out for the first of the two ioops. 62 APRIL 16, 2003 cue .... MxSales.com/Reno Motorsports rider Belingheri was having a dust-free ride while the rest of the riders sorted themselves out in the blinding dust. Maxxis/Moose/Factory Effex rider Fain reclaimed second, followed by Alosi, Steve Tichenor, Darrol Brown and Sean Berryman. Sponsorless Johnson was charging hard through the pack and was already in the top five by the halfway mark. Fain's bike seized just after Johnson had taken over second overall at the 42-mile mark, giving third to Alosi, who was foHowed by Brown and 16-year-old Reece Honea. Belingheri entered the pits with a comfortable 2 1/2-minute lead over Johnson. The fast and sandy loop was causing many riders to run out of fuel, incJud~ ing Tichenor. "I was having a good ride," he later reported, "and it just ran dry." Out front on the second loop, Belingheri was cruising along, only catching dust from lapped traffic. n e vv s Blue Wing Dry Lake: Ryan Johnson overcame a bad start to win the Jackass 100, a.k.a. round two 01 the Moose MRANN Series, in Blue Wing Flat, Nevada. "I was having a great race and just kept a good pace," Belingheri recounted. "The course was very fast, but it was still a lot of fun." Johnson still held down second and was chiseling away at Belingheri's lead. "I didn't know if I was catching him [Belingheri]," Johnson said, "because the dust from the lappers made it hard to tell who was in front of you." Brown was making up time as well, passing Alosi for third. At the end of the loop, Beiingheri entered the final 5-mile stretch of dry lakebed with Johnson less than 20 seconds back. With the finish in sight, Belingheri's trouble~free ride suddenly ended when his bike seized at mile 101. Johnson cruised by to take the win, while Belingheri tried to find a way to the finish to salvage his good ride. "I was charging the whole race," a happy Johnson explained, "and I think if I had another 10 miles, I would have caught Dennis. I will take the win anyway, though." If Johnson continues to put in hard-charging rides like this one, he is sure to attract the attention of some sponsors. Brown crossed the finish to take second, just ahead of Belingheri, who luckily had found a lapped rider with a tow strap to give him a pull. Alosi was the next through, followed by up-andcomer Honea with his first-ever top~five finish. Ed McCoy aced the Over 40 class at sixth overall, followed by Dave Mayer and then Berryman, who worked his way up after a bad start. Gil Grieve and Justin Drake rounded out the top 10. In the 80/60cc race, Kyle O'Brien was first overall, followed by fellow 80cc Experts Eric Amaker and Ryan Toomey. Eric's little brother Troy Amaker was the first 60cc rider, in 10th overall. Ty Tremaine scored his first win of the year in SOcc action, followed by Jesse Gore. Tank Siappers's Jackass 100 Blue Wing Flat, Nevada Results: March 15-16, 2003 (Round 2 of 10) 50; l. CMC Northwest Winter Series Round 12: Albany Motorsports Park Thompson Takes Charge By CLAY LIGHT ALBANY, OR, MAR. 16 Southern Oregon speedster Ryan Thompson was the dominant Intermediate-class rider at round 12 of the 14-round CMC Northwest Winter Series, which doubled as the Albany Motorsports Park's Supercross opener. Despite rain showers, the 17-year-old posted wins in the 250cc and Before The Hill Intermediate classes. Another stellar performer was central Oregon's Cory Paterson. Piloting a pair of KTMs, Paterson pounded the competition in the 50cc (7-8), 50cc Open and 60cc (6-8) classes, completing the only three-class decimation of the day. Local riders Aaron McClinton and Nick Randklev also perfomned admirably: McClinton, who has been on a rampage in the BOcc ranks of late, won the 80cc (14·16) and Supermini classes, while Randklev was the dominant rider in the 125cc and Before The Hill Junior classes. Thompson's day started off with an overall win in the combined Before The Hill intermediate/Junior contest, although Ryan Huege did ail he could to put the stops to Thompson in both motos. Huege darted ahead of the fieid
