Calkins Conquers Newcomerstown By ROB PETRAS required was huge. The track had been completely redone for the event, including reversing the direction. Saturday's practice was canceled (as was the scheduled supercross) to keep the track in shape for Sunday's event. The 125cc A event alone was worth the price of admission. Georgia supercross hero Shae Bentley put on a show for the fans. Clint Shealy, another supercross star, made sure Bentley kept his head down and the throttle pinned. Aaron Undsey was third, making the Suzuki sweep complete. The fans were pumped, and Bentley was happy to provide autographs for the kids. The 125cc C event also featured some great competition. Freewheeling/LSD Racing CRI25 pilot Clayton Henderson won both motos. The first moto was a runaway, but the second was one of the best races of the day. Henderson started midpack and had to push for the win. Chad Handrop was way out front, but Henderson ran him down for a last-lap, last-turn pass. Yamaha-mounted Mateusz Jachacy finished up second overall, and Suzuki rider Brandon Chapman was a strong third. The 85cc (9-13) class was the property of local Honda rider Nathan Collins. Suzuki jockey Walker Mayo bested Honda rider Billy Greene for the second spot on the podjum. As the motos continued, the track became faster, and the track crew stayed on top of the touch-ups to keep it that way. The 250cc A riders also put on quite a show. Shealy used his Suzuki to top the class after finishing second in the 125cc A division. Kyle Kelly kept the heat on Shealy, and his YZ250 was up to the task. Kelly designed and built the track and spent much of his time touching up the soft spots, and he also ran two classes· making him the "Ironman" of the day. D.C. Thomason rode his KTM to third, and anyone who can hold Thomason to third place has done something. The Over 25 class belonged to "Ironman" Kelly. He proved a Yamaha is faster than the front-end loader and took the class. Honda rider Mark Taylor looked strong for second. Yamaha pilot Anthony Duncan got the last spot on the podium. The Over 40 division was owned by former Pro rider Ross Johnson. The new rules caused Ross to trade his KTM 520 for a YZ450 to stay in the hunt, and it worked. Suzuki jockey Darrell Sims finished ahead of William Phee and his big red Honda. Once again, Bremen Race Park got it done. Calling off practice and the supercross event allowed Sunday's races to come off fine; it was a wise choice. The new layout of the track was well-received by the riders and fans. It'll be hard to wait for the Loretta Lynn's qualifier in May, but it'll be worth it. a four-time Blackwater ]00 winner. Hyde placed fourth in the Over 30 A class and second in Over 40 action. Burleson was fifth in Over 40 racing and then took on the 125cc B class, and the 54-year-old finished a highly creditable 15th out of 36! Results Scenic Highlands Motosports Park NEWCOMERSTOWN, OH, MAR. 16 Unseasonable weather, including sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70s, greeted the 406 riders attending District 12'5 season opener at beautiful Scenic Highlands Motosports Park. District 12 is picking up momentum as more and more racers are lining up behind the starting gates. Scenic Highlands is becoming one of the cornerstone tracks to build that comeback upon. Promoter Tim Bemhard and crew had the facility in fine shape and running like clockwork, and riders showed up from Indiana, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Michigan. The healthy tum out generated a lot of topnotch racing. Such was the case in the ] 25cc B class. As the 36 racers spun over the starting gate for moto one, Warren Laney led the pack on his Yamaha. Hot on his heels were a couple of Suzuki riders, Cody Calkins and A.J. Hattery, while Yamaha pilot Zach Kaiser held down fourth. Pennsylvania's Kevin Hoge gated poorly on a Suzuki; he completed lap one in 14th. Yamaha-mounted Treavis Poynter was well outside the top 20. Laney held the lead for 2 1/2 laps before Calkins reeled him in. Hattery made a run for second, but Laney held him off. Hoge was steadily working forward, and he crossed the finish line in fourth, followed by Kaiser, Suzuki jockey James Singer and a hard-charging Poynter in seventh. Poynter and Hoge got much better starts in moto two, powering out of the first turn side by side. Poynter took the point, with Hoge a dose second. Just behind them were Singer, Calkins lind Kaiser. Hattery was ninth, and Laney was way back in 15th. Hattery began a drive that took him up to Calkins. They both moved past Singer and started to pressure Hoge. By halfway, Laney was up to seventh. Hoge took a tumble and was forced to drop out. Despite Poynter's efforts, Calkins caught and passed him for the lead. Hattery moved into second a lap later. At the checkers, it was Calkins with an impressive double-moto victory, followed by Hattery, Poynter and Singer. Laney was fifth after blitzing through the pack. National-caliber racer Vince Kamow bested the 125cc and 250cc A divisions on his Decker Cycles KTMs. His smooth, precise style carried him to four moto wins. Carl Schlacht made • dramatic debut in the Pro class, getting the holeshot in the first I 25cc A moto on his McCune Cycle World KTM; he eventually finished third, behind Karnow and GNCC star Cole Calkins, also on a KTM. Schlacht was runner-up in the 250cc A class. Suzuki-mounted Mark Bosnic from Follansbee, West Virginia, placed third. Calhoun Supercross Scogin Scoops Up Season Opener Win By FAT BILLY CALHOUN, GA, MAR. 22 The Calhoun Supercross season opener brought out a good crowd. No rain this week allowed the track crew to have the track in great shape. The track was under water last week, but this week water was needed for dust control. The racing was hot and heavy. The 60cc (10-11) contest was a good one. Dustin Waters got off to a good start this year by placing himself on the top podium spot. Jake Bradford took the second spot in the Kawasaki-dominated race, and Justin Isbrecht held the third podium position. In the 60-80cc Preteen class, Suzuki jockey Drew Wilson edged out KTM-mounted Nic Kimsey, and the hero of the previous class, Waters, placed third. Bobby Scogin was the top dog in the 125cc C event. Scogin took two average starts and made the best of them and went on to win both motos in style. Russell Benes put his Yamaha in the second spot, just ahead of Honda rider Chris Castle. Scogin's year is also off to a fast start, so keep an eye on him. D.C. Thomason was the only one in front of Scogin, on his way to his usual domination of the 125cc A and the 250cc A classes. The 250cc Beginner class also featured some great competition. Yamaha rider Mark Riehl was the first finisher, with Kawasaki jockey Nathan Dover a strong second. Joey Godfrey received the last podium spot with consistent finishes. The Over 35 class also had some good action. Stanley Dowda, on a borrowed Yamaha, ran away with the class on this night. Honda rider Billy Atkinson held off Rickey Ford's Yamaha. Riehl won his second class of the night in the Over 30 contest. Honda rider Russ Castle was hoping for a mistake up front to help him out, but there's always next week. The Moto-Madness Series is off to a good start. Bremen Race Park will host round three.
