The top four were unchanged on lap nine of this 14-lap main, but Chester seemed to be having problems and was moving backward, dropping another spot as Barnes got around to lay claim to fifth place. With the two-iapsto-go signal out, Neese closed the gap on Plotts and was doing ali he could to make the pass for the win and a perfect weekend, but it wasn't to be. Plotts exited the final tum about a bikelength ahead, and it was a drag race to the finish, with Plotts and his big Honda thumper getting the win. Trailing him were Neese. Katin, Wallace and Barnes. Trevor Vandiver Hardin Boxes Up His Seventh Win By JEFFREY KETCHUM NEW JOHNSONVILLE, TN, MAR. 2 The ninth round of the Mid-South Championship Youth Series came to Box Hollow, Tennessee, This was the first Youth race held here. The race had been postponed from February 16 because of heavy rain and flooding, and though it had rained for 10 days straight, on race day the deluge stopped, and it was a great day of racing, The Pee Wee course was about a half-mile long. At the start, there was a left-hand corner with a creek bed section that only ran at the start. Then riders entered a grasstrack and crossed a creek bed into a sweeping corner that entered an off-camber woods section before coming into the scoring area. Off the Pee Wee start, the leaders were Logan P'PooI, Steven Middlebrook and Jackson Ward. On the second lap, Ward passed Middlebrook for second place. Ward then went on to pass P'Pool on the third lap for first place. On the fifth lap, P'Pool was able to take over first place again, but on the seventh lap he fell back to third place. The top five finishers were Ward, Dylan Majors, P'PooI, Middlebrook and Trevor Vandiver. The Mini and Junior A and B course was 2.3 miies long. It started with a left-hand turn into a rocky creek bed and then went back to a grasstrack. Then riders crossed a shallow creek into a woods section and went under a log before going up a hill to a winding, open trail before negotiating a long, rough downhill that led to an off-camber woods section and then entered the scoring area, The Mini race got off to a great start, with Justin Conners taking the holeshot. However, on the first lap, Kody Hardin and Scott Brannon were able to get around Conners. On the second lap. Zachary Nash managed to get around Conners. On the third lap, Conners crashed hard, allowing Thompson's Motorsport/ Anderson Powersports-backed Cody Schoettmer and Trenton Hayes to move into fourth and fifth, respectively. On the last lap, Honda rider Brannon passed Hardin to move into first place. Alpinestars/HJC Helmets/KH Signs and Graphics/Bloomington Powersports-backed Hardin didn't let him stay there long; he quickly repassed Brannon to box up his seventh win of the season. Rounding out the top five were Hardin, Brannon. Nash, Schoettmer and Hayes. Right off the Junior B start, Sarge's Cycle/ Fox/FMF/White Brothers-backed Jacob Patterson and Sean Gentry were running first and second, After the first lap, Patterson, Gentry, Beau Nicewinter, Buddy Wall and Jeffrey Ketchum were in the top five positions, On the second lap, Lake Hill Motors-backed Luke Robinson passed Ketchum and Wall to take over fourth place before passing Nicewinter to take over third place on the fourth lap. On the fifth lap: MSR/One lndustries/Maxima/Galfer/ Tag-backed Ketchum passed Wall, but on the final lap, Ketchum went down with another 80 APRIL 9.2003' eye I e rider, allowing Wall to get back by him. The top five finishers were Patterson, Gentry, Robinson, Nicewinter and Wall. Special kudos are due Bush Motorsports/AC Racing-backed Gentry for still finishing second after riding with a cast on his wrist and being in a good deal of pain. Immediately after the green flag fell for the Junior A race, the event turned into a skirmish between Cody Miller and Broc Sims, with Chaz Akers close behind. Dustin Smith and Josh White foliowed the lead trio. It was a close battle between Miller and Sims, but on the third lap Sims managed to take over first place, The top five finishers were Sims, Miller, Akers, Smith and Dillon Fleming. The Youth riders thanked Robert Patterson for putting on such a great race, "One of the best things of the racing season are the friendships these children are developing," said Lisa Nash, a parent of one of the racers. WOODLAND, WA, MAR. 8 If one rider has been particu~arly dominant during the Northwest Vintage £, Evolution Motocross Championship Series this season, it has been Washington's Randy Skiver. The 50-something-year-old former AMA Grand National dirt-track and road-race star has won every race he's entered, from the start of the series at Ward Creek MX Park through to the sixth round, heid at Woodland Motocross Park. On this soggy day, Skiver churned out a trio of wins, although for the first time this year, the former National number holder failed to do it with a clean sweep. Skiver sloshed his way to a total of five moto wins in the blustery conditions; his only loss on the day was to Maico-mounted Jay Lael, in the first Pre-1970 Expert moto. However, Skiver came back strong in moto two to lead Lael and Canada's Ken Burningham in the overall results. Skiver, riding a Penton/Honda hybrid, also posted wins in the Four-Stroke and Over 50 Expert ciasses to continue his points lead in all three classes, Skiver wasn't the only former AMA Pro on hand; both Andy James and Karl Landrus made their marks, Landrus, who campaigned Yamaha and Maico machinery in the AMA Nationals in the late I 970s and early I 980s, contested a pair of Evolution classes, one of which he handily won - the Over 40 Amateur class. Riding his familiar Maico mount. Landrus aced both motos. Suzuki RM jockey Jeff Neumann trailed Landrus in both motos, while Dan Russell. on his potent Husqvarna CR. placed third in both outings. Landrus, though, wasn't as, fortunate in the Open Amateur class, as YZ pi1'6t Andrew Sullivan scored a win in moto one; Landrus came Moreland's Motocross 990 Vickeryville Road S",nton. Things improved slightly for Landrus in moto two; he followed Leon Leonard to the checkered flag and placed fifth overall, behind overall winner Leonard (2-1), Bob Walberg (4-3). Len Lowery (3-6) and Blake Westrum (6-4). James, one of two brothers from eastern Washington who ruled the Iniand Empire 20 or more years ago, had tough competition in the Over 40 Expert class: Husqvarna rider Keith Webster and several other top Northwest riders were on hand. Webster held off the Hondamounted James to snare a win in the opening moto, but James came back strong in moto two to reverse the order and grab the overall win, ahead of Webster (1-3), CZ jockey Neil Giertsen (3-2), Christopher James (5-4) and Steve Saterlund (4-5). Jeff Shelton, Erik Sullivan and Don Shelton have been among the elite in the 250cc Amateur Vintage class this season, and while none of the trio did particularly well on this day, they did remain in the hunt for the series' title. Sullivan fared the best of the three, placing third overall aboard his Husqvarna, but it was Kawasaki rider Mike Harritt who grabbed the overall win with a 2-1 tally. Don topped the first moto but couidn't repeat the feat in mota two, finishing sixth and allowing Glen Frieboth to move into second overall with consistent 3-3 performances in one of the day's largest classes. The Youth riders were, surprisingly. among the most determined participants of the day. Despite the quagmirelike conditions, there was oniy a singie DNF in the XR75 class, which is open to riders up to age 12 on 80ccand-under machinery. In the predominant Honda class, Colton Bartlett, the lone Intermediate rider, posted a win. Brandon Butler was the cream of the crop in the eight-rider Amateur class, posting a double-moto romp to lead Mitchell Newton (3-2) and Brook McFarland (2-3) into the overali top three. The day's largest class was the Over 40 Vintage Amateur class, Consistency paid off for Bultaco rider AI Anderberg, who failed to capture wins in either moto but instead used 2-2 placings to capture the overall win. Moto winners Don Shelton and Glen Frieboth failed to duplicate their performances from their other motos and went 1-6 and 8-1 to finish third and fifth overall, respectively. Yamaha-mounted Charlie Martin was the only other rider besides Skiver to snare three class wins on the day. Martin topped the 125cc, 250cc and Over 40 Evolution Intermediate classes, also winning five of six motos on the day.
