Enaurq:._... -a . \;.: '. oiA".t'A'f~he en'd STORV AND PHOTOS BV JILL ASHWORTH PATTERSON CLEAR CREEK, CA, MAR. 9 TM-supported racers nearly scored a top-five sweep, taking the first, second, third and fifth overall places at the 18th Wild Boar Enduro, with Fox/Faultline Suspension/IMXbacked Brian Sperle claiming the firstplace victory at round two of District 36's Moose-sponsored Northern California Championship Enduro Series. The Wild Boar Enduro, which was held on day two of the Timekeepers Motorcycle Club's two-day "Wild Weekend," was also the second round of D36's Motl;ll/Moose B/C Championship Enduro Series. Day one was the Wild Piglet Family Enduro. The three-loop, 75-ground-mile event, which was laid out by TMC's Alan Plumbridge, attracted 241 entrants to the popular BLM riding area at Clear Creek. The first loop, at just over 12 miles long, featured a 24-mph special test that took riders through three sections of brushy single-track trails to check one. At the check-out, Sperle, who had kept a keen eye out for a hidden check-in that didn't materialize, charged hard and carded a 0.04. Jack Lanto was next with 0.23, and Nick Dobbel followed with 0.29. "You could see a check crew standing on the next ridge," Sperle said. "I cruised to the next possible, stopped, and it was clear, so I went in [to the test] early." Another fast section took racers to K 70 APRIL 9, 2003' cue I e check two, where Sperle and Jeff Clements were the only two to score zeroes. Fox's Billy Russell and Mike Simmons each dropped one, while others added twos or more to their scores. At the first gas break, Sperle had just four tie-breaker seconds against him, and the other contenders each had two or more points on their cards. Brian Jelich's 4.212 was the best of the fours. After check seven, at the second gas stop, Sperle's 3.188 led Clements' 4.057 and Russell's 6.247. Jelich's 8.321 and Dave Wood's 8.363 were next. The 20-mile third loop began with a "free zone," and racers headed up "Indian Rail Trail" to a 19-mph section along some contour trails. Check eight caught several riders off guard, and there were many who logged twopoint "burns" on their scorecards. After three more checks and several miles of fun trails through brush and trees, riders were back at the finish. "I kept waiting for the hard sections that are usually in the third loop," JP Metal Fab/Honda Peninsula-supported Jelich said. "This was a definite change of format from past years." "That long test on the second loop was really fun," Maxxis/Motion Pro/ Fastway-sponsored Garrahan said. "It was the best part of the race!" While the early finishers were sharing their race stories, excitement grew at the finish line as TMC club members learned that a 10-year-old was riding their event. A combination of 17-, 24- and 27 -mph speed averages kept racers alert and from being bored with having "possibles" occur too often. At about 10 miles in length, the second test was the longest of the event. It took riders on the "Airplane Loop," where they navigated a twisting single-track trail that winds through debris from a crashed WWll bomber. nevvs ing his first full enduro in the C class. When scores were tabulated, Sperle's final 3.219 secured his victory, and Russell took second with 6.274. Garrahan's precise riding on loop three moved him to third with a total of 9.324. Jelich placed fourth with 9.333, and Wood's consistency put him in fifth with 9.417. "The course was marked well, and the speeds allowed us to have fun," Maxxis/Smith/ICO-sponsored Russell said. "You've got to hand it to Brian [Sperle] - he took a gamble that we didn't, and it paid off." "I knew I needed to ride smart," Sperle said. "This is the first enduro in a long time that I haven't burned a check!
