Lanza, opting to go one more lap, regained the lead and tried to build up as big a cushion as possible for Harden's final sprint. Renshaw and sponsor Mike Bierman watched the Lanza/Harden transfer while awaiting Musgrave's arrival. When Musgrave sped by at full throttle, Harden was emerging from Pit Row. They were nearly on top of each other as the final push began. Lap after lap, the margin stayed at less than 10 seconds, and then the white flag came out. Suddenly, a loud, raspy sound could be heard from the KTM's exhaust pipe, which had split and was losing power. Musgrave smelled blood and was closing back in going into the last lap for what was surely going to be a close finish, but Harden limped across the finish line in front with Musgrave nowhere to be seen. "They ran out of gas, they ran out of gas on the last lap!" Harden said of the Renshaw bike. Harden then leaned forward and looked at his front brake, the cable having apparently snapped. "I lost the brakes out there," Harden said. "I nearly crashed about 20 times on the final lap!" Musgrave ran back to the pits, got gas, ran back to the bike and managed to finish in second. Both teams completed 30 laps and were the only teams on the lead lap when all was said and done. Third overall, with 29 laps, went to former Six-Hour winner Bob Maxwell, who teamed with his son Mitch, and Danny Giannini. The next best team went 28 laps (as did five others). In the largest class of the day, the lronman, which fielded 32 entries, was won by Rick Daniels, who finished a remarkable 11 th overall, having recorded 27 laps.
