Coming into the 27th annual FMF /Transworld Motocross Golden State Nationals' finals at Starwest, Alessi was ailing after a spill the previous weekend had popped his shoulder out of its socket and then back in - an injury that, having occurred once, is prone to happen again and again. "I spent about four hours a day this past week in therapy, and the doctor said I would only be about 60 percent this weekend," said the factory Honda/Alloy rider after practice on Saturday morning. "I have to take it easy." That was apparently easier said than done, as the 14-year-old then tore into the two-day, four-moto program in four classes and left Sunday night for Texas with a record-setting win streak and four championships, duplicating his achievement in last year's Golden State Nationals finals. Over the past two weekends, Alessi had 16 consecutive moto victories in the BOcc Supermini, BOcc Open, BOcc (14-16) and 125cc Schoolboy. Despite his condition, he collected another eight out of eight on Saturday and repeated that feat on Sunday, upping his streak to 32 motos in a row! "I've never had a streak like this," he grinned. "Never." Alessi's efforts overshadowed those of Pro Circuit/Thor-backed four-stroke Yamaha racer Andy Bakken, who became only the fifth rider in GSN history to capture three championships in one season when he narrowly topped the 125cc and 250cc Intermediates and also was victorious in the 500cc Amateur class, in which he won all four motos of the weekend. In doing so, he had to overcome some disappointments on Saturday. He won the first motos in both the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate classes, only to be denied the wins in the tie-breaking second rounds, when he placed runner-up behind RG3/MSR/Northland Kawasaki jockey Paul Pearcy in the 125s and FMF/Maxxis Suzuki jockey Jeff Loop in the 250s. On Sunday, Pearcy repeated his 125cc Intermediate victory, but, after winning the first moto, Bakken still barely won the championship with a third-place finish in the second race. He relegated Loop to second in both 250cc motos to solidify that class title. Pearcy was also in the hunt in 68 APRIL 9. 2003' cue I e the 250cc class but fell in the second moto while running third and vented his frustration by leaping to his feet and kicking his KX. Loop faced off with Alessi as well, in the Schoolboy class. Even though both are 14, Loop is one of the, if not the, biggest 14-year-olds in racing, standing 6-foot-4 and weighing in at IBO. Alessi, at 5-foot-3 and 105 pounds, seems dwarfed among the rest of the 125cc riders, and the power-to-weight ratio gives him a huge horsepower advantage. Loop finished second in all four confrontations. Kaulin Boggio took the 125cc Junior championship, but it was tough. On Saturday, he led for the first four laps in moto one but slipped to third when he dropped his fourstroke JMG Yamaha with less than two laps to go. This gave Brandon Reina the momentary lead on his EVS Yamaha, but he was passed on the final lap by Ecuador's Bernardo "Bernie" Hidalgo, riding an Alessi Racing Honda. Boggio came back and led from start to finish in the second stanza to take the day's overall. Reina repeated with a second, and Hidalgo was fourth. A day later, Hidalgo got the holeshot in the first moto and spent nearly the entire race holding off Boggio. In moto two, Kaulin got the jump but was relegated to second by the end of the first tour, behind Timothy Berger, on a Mom £, Dad/ Tyler £, Rich Yamaha, for three laps. Boggio retook the lead, and Berger then felt the wrath of Hidalgo when they banged together later on the same lap. Berger went over the berm and stumbled to fourth. Hidalgo then closed on Boggio, and in the final turns before the checkers, Boggio fell, giving Hidalgo the overall! However, Boggio still finished second, earning the championship. Jessie Arthurs won all four 60cc Beginner motos of the weekend on a Roxy/Pro Action Kawasaki. On Sunday, she took the first-moto lead as the second lap began, but in the second race she was stuck back in fourth on lap four. She then improved a position per lap and was battling with Bridgestone KTM rider Ty Siminoe on the final lap; she made the late pass and completed her sweep. Callaway Motorsports Kawasaki jockey Casey Montoya collected his n e _ s first-ever major victory on Saturday in the BOcc Beginner class after heavily favored Cyle Teal crashed his Torco Yamaha in the first turn of moto two and was run over (though he did remount and rejoin the race). Teal returned on Sunday, won both rounds and barely got the championship.
