After some encouraging testing runs, Harley delivered in Gainesville. Andrew qualified 10th, with a 7.27, by far the quickest V-twin run in NHRA history. When Andrew made the field, it marked just the third time that a Harley has qualified for an NHRA race, and during eliminations, he became the first rider to win a round when he beat former AMA Prostar champ Fred Collis in round one with a 7.36. Hines continued to march through eliminations when defending event champ Craig Treble red-lighted in round two. Hines was actually leading Scali in the semifinals and appeared to be on his way to the final when his transmission broke. "I couldn't hear Geno, and I couldn't see him: Hines said. "I knew I was ahead, and then when I hit the [shifter] button for high gear, the transmission broke. I hate to lose that way, but we're still pretty happy about this weekend. We still haven't made a perfect run yet. Even on the 7.27 run, the bike went to the right and then to the left. When it moves around, it's hard to get it straightened out because I don't want to hang a knee or shoulder out. This bike doesn't have a fairing so it's not as aerodynamic as the Suzukis are. We've worked so hard on this program. It's great to see it start paying off. When I won the first round, my dad actually got a little teary-eyed." Finally, the other big story at the Gainesville race was NHRA's new Christmas Tree starting line system, which used LED bulbs in place of the old incandescent lights. The new bulbs illuminate noticeably quicker and contributed to a number of redlight starts, including Scali's early leave in the final. "NHRA is going to have to find a way to slow down those lights a little: Scali said. "I can wait for the yellow lights to come on, dump the clutch, and still red-light. We've had to make changes to the bike to keep it from leaving so hard, and we shouldn't have to do that. If you see the yellow light in Top Fuel, Funny Car, or Pro Stock [cars], you can't red-light, but it's a big problem for the bikes.
