(Left) MOB boss Matt Peelman tests out one of the custom Harleys his shop sells. "Don't take a pielure of me on a grandpa bike," he said afterward. (Right) Peelman developed this single-side drive device, which he says allows for the pulley and disc to run on the same side of the rear wheel, and he says he did it for about a third of the price of comparable components. Las Vegas, right off of Tropicana and Valley View," he said. "Me and a company called Hellbound Steel Co., which is right here out of Rancho [Cucamonga, California], also. They produce about 30 to 35 bikes a month and sell them all over the United States. We're opening up a store that's about 7400 square feet. It'll actually be 'Hellbound Steel Co. Featuring MOB Choppers.' I'll be running the store - staffing it and all that. And Carey Hart is going to be our spokesman, in fact. It's a good fit, freestyle motocross and choppers. Like, Brian Deegan just got a bike from Jesse [James, of West Coast Choppers). But like I said before, guys like him are charging like 70, 75 grand for motorcycles. Shit, I'll build you two for $75,0001 I guess their time is more valuable than mine. "Anyway, Carey Hart is going to be our spokesman, and we're going to have a Grand Opening party at The Palms, where Carey is actually opening up a tattoo parlor. He's actually opening one up inside the casino, which is a first. The shop is going to be opened at the end of May." And that's not the end of the company's rapid growth. "Then, the 30th of March, I get the space next door, and they have 30 days to move out," he continued. "That way, I'll get double the showroom and double the work area. And we're also bringing in a line of bikes that a buddy and I started a few years ago - the guy's name's Kyle. He builds bikes on the side, and I was doing it, too, and we started a thing called Notorious 909 Choppers. It's a line of bikes MOB Choppers will be carrying soon, and we'll put 'em up in the Vegas store too. It's just another bike style, you know?" Not everyone knows what's possible when they walk in to MOB, but how often do most people get the (Above) MOB not only builds custom bikes in the service area, they also have the capability of fixing and customizing Harley-Davidsons. (Left) An example of one of MOB's custom Harleys. opportunity to build a bike the way they want it? It can be confusing, and it's definitely a learning experience. "This one guy just threw down 30 grand and then says, 'Oh, I like these wheels and these pipes, and that color's really neat,''' Peelman states as an example. "But he doesn't realize that none of those things go together. He's trying to build three different styles of bikes." But Peel man just sits back and helps him through the process until they come to a compromise - the customer gets what he wants and pays less than most other shops. "I've got a good crew of guys Ryan, Greg and Jeff. We're kicking ass," he said. "If you can afford it, we can build it. Plus, we have financing available. We can finance and build a bike here." 2217 E. 4th Street Ontario, CA 91764 909/944-7300 www.mobchoppers.com And by the way, they'll only build American machines Hondas, etc. no Yamahas, CN c u e ' .. n I!! _ S 'APRIL 9.2003 47
