Daniel's Ridge Motocross Griffin Claws Out a Win By MARK NEOENS TAYLORSVILLE, NC, MAR. 9 As the Daniel's Ridge Motocross Fali/Winter Series is winding down, the 50s and 60s took over at round 11. Large classes made for great racing. In the 50cc (7-8) class, 15 riders took to the gate. Zack Lail took the holeshot, foliowed by Cody Griffin, Matthew Wedding and then Adam Bowen, who quickly went by Wedding on the first jump. The lead pack was foliowed by Tyler Young, Bradley Sisson, Austin Root and Sean Shalvoy. Root went by Shalvoy on the first jump also. Griffin got beside Lail in the triple but couldn't make the pass. Bowen and Wedding were right behind. Root and Young were pushing Wedding, who was working behind Bowen. Griffin was trying to get under Lail. but Lail kept the door closed. Root made a spot and went by Wedding. Young went by Wedding as they both went by a downed rider. Root took off and put some distance between himself and Young. Out front, Lail got a lapped rider between him and Griffin and took the checkered flag first. Next came Bowen. Root. Young and Wedding. In the second moto, Bowen took the holeshot, followed by Lail, Griffin, Wedding, Sisson and Young. Lail slipped up and let Griffin by. but he was still right behind. Griffin went to work on Bowen and went under him to take the first spot. Sisson was trying to hold off Root. but Root drove hard into the whoops and went by Sisson. Lail made the pass on Bowen and then went after Griffin. Griffin took the white flag, and time ran out for Lail. Griffin took first overall with a 2-1 tally. Lail (1·2) was second, Bowen was third, Root took fourth, and Wedding took fifth. In the 50cc Open class, 14 riders took off from the gate. After a battle that looked like a duplicate of the one in the 50cc (7-8) class, Lail took first overall with a 2-1 tally, over Griffin. Bowen was third. Root was fourth. and Young was fifth. In 65cc action, 14 riders took to the track. Mack Dickson swept first with a I- 1 score. FL, MAR. 2 Hosting dual-sport rides is nothing new to Robert ·Swampy" Frey and the club he formed in 1996. the Withlacoochee Dual Sport Riders Club. Frey's first organized event, held in Brooksville, Florida, and the Withlacoochee Ocala National Forest: Riders negotiate a scenic jeep trail while participating in the firstever Bike Week Dual Sport Ride, starting and ending in Eureka, Florida. 70 r.---------------------------------,o n e "'" Si Francesco's Restaurant: The Motor Sports Press Association presented its annual Bill Spencer Racer of the Year Awards in Oakland, California; Casey Yarrow (left) was the Road Racer of the Year, and Tony Souza Jr_ (right) was the Dirt Track Rider of the Year. Both gentlemen ride in AMA District 36. State Forest, was a great success. His pragmatic and realistic approach to dealing with state and local officials and his ability to get things done have allowed great flexibility in routing the annual Devils Creek Dual Sport Ride for the past seven years. He also initiated efforts that resulted in state-forest regulations' being reworded to clearly allow use of streetlicensed motorcycles on named and numbered roads on Florida public lands. His horizons expanded to hosting Adventure Rides in both Florida and Tennessee and creating a dual·sporting network throughout the Southeast. For 2003, he put together a national AMA·Dunlop Great American Dual Sport Grand Tour that's doable for any motorcyclist. So when the Daytona Dirt Riders decided to discontinue their Alligator Dual Sport Ride. Swampy realized Daytona isn't Daytona without a dual-sport ride. He moved up the date of one of the WDSRC dual-sport rides to March, and thus the Bike Week Dual Sport Ride was born! The ride was just what dual-sporting is all about: a challenging trail every now and then, with scenic, easier sections, too - this isn't an enduro; there's no rush, no pressure, just fun. The Oklawaha Campground, located at the northwest corner of the Ocala National Forest, served as ride headquarters. The 125-mile ride was run in two loops, both starting and finishing at the campground, with a typical southern barbecue· chicken lunch - you know; the kind with baked beans and coleslaw. This one was pretty good! Out-of·state riders got some first-hand experience with the famous Florida sand, especially on the afternoon loop. Now you know why Florida produces such great riders: "Sand training" is the secret weapon! And Swampy, true to his name, found some really nice mudholes to negotiate. Many of the paved-road sections ran through typical Florida rural areas, with a mixture of beautiful homes, small farms, and mobile homes galore - just the kind of place that makes us feel at home, with friendly smiles and waves from everyone we saw. The Ocala's graded roads are straight, wide and usually hard·packed. They run through a thick pine forest and offer a nice, relaxed ride in between the more difficult trails. This is a perfect place to enjoy being on a motorcycle and observing nature first-hand. Riders even had the opportunity to ride past scenic Lake Oklawaha and over Rodman dam. The trails are something else; Swampy chose some very narrow sections through dense hardwoods and palmettos, requiring lots of concentration, especially when the sand got soft! One highlight of the ride was that last 3·mile section of deep, sandy whoops; riders never thought it would end, but when it did, they felt greatl What a ride! Dual-sporting is back with a vengeance, and Bike Week is again complete. If you didn't get a chance to ride this year, make plans now for next year's ride. Swampy has this habit of improving things all the time. Francesco's Restaurant MSPA Bill Spencer Racers of the Year By KAREN GOOLD OAKLAND, CA, MAR. 5 The 40th annual Motor Sports Press Association presentations were made at the annual Green Flag dinner at Francesco's Restaurant in Oakland. California, on March 5. The MSPA is an organization of professional motorsports and automotive journalists and photographers covering all aspects of motorsports racing in Northern California, Washington, Nevada, Arizona. Indiana and North Carolina. Awards are presented annually to honor outstanding performances by some of the best talents in racing on pavement and dirt tracks, in cars and on motorcycles. This was the second year that awards were given in honor of the late Bill Spencer. This year's Bill Spencer Motorcycle Racers of the Year Awards went to Road Racer of the Year Casey Yarrow and Dirt Track Rider of the Year T cny Souza Jr. Both of these riders are from Northern California's AMA District 36, and both started racing as children. Yarrow has had great success in the four years since he returned to riding at age 18. In 2002, he was invited to Europe to ride with the world's top supermotard riders after finishing in first place here. Yarrow took the number-one spot from none other than his dad, Allen Yarrow, Souza has also had an accomplished career, dating to all the way back to when he was the number-one Pee Wee rider in District 36 at just 5 years old. Souza finished the Gene Romero West Coast Flat Track Series in the second spot, and he finished with the numberthree black plate In the District 36 Sportsman competition in the 2002 season. The families of each of these riders are an integral part of their racing and their winning of awards. Congratulations to both of these young gentlemen. who set a wonderful example both on and off the racetrack with their riding ability and their sportsmanship. _
