Arnold Arena Easton Edifies the Schoolboys By "MODo" STURGIS, KY, MAR, 8 The final round of the Mid-America Arenacross Series was the showdown for the cham· pionships. The previous seven rounds had been the scene of loaded gates, making as many as three heats necessary to get down to main-event riders in several classes. At the beginning of round eight, the points were so close in many of the classes that the overall series championships were still up for grabs. Fans packed the arena again to witness the last round of this indoor racing series. At the end of round seven, Justin Easton, Colby Bowles and Brian Huckstep had the points lead in the Schoolboy class, each within striking distance of the other. Shane Hayden, Russell Bell and Clint Fryberger rounded out the rest of the top positions. The Schoolboys put the hammer down at the gate drop, and Bell, Huckstep, Bowles and Easton battled to the first tum! Bowles took the lead at the tum, with Huckstep and Easton right behind him, giving him no slack. Bell fell back to fourth. These ambitious points hus· tiers kept their throttles twisted from the gate drop to the checkered flag and sealed the front finishes in this heat. The Schoolboys roared off the line for their main event, with Huckstep, Bowles and Easton chunking it for the number·one spot. Bowles took the position but lost it with a spill in the second turn. Easton took over the lead and held it. Huckstep controlled second, and Bowies worked his way back up to third. The 125cc C class had some of the flavor of the Schoolboy class; it was another close points race, with Bowles, Easton, Huckstep and Mitchell Shoup in the top points positions. The heat had Bowles, Huckstep and Jordan Bellwood blasting out of the gate in front. After some soil samples, miscues and position swapping, Bellwood won the heat, with Easton finishing third, Bowles fifth. Shoup fourth, and Huckstep 11 tho In the main event, Bowles claimed the lead early and held it. Bellwood grabbed second, with Easton fourth, Shoup sixth and Huckstep eighth. In the 50cc Honda class, Alex Strunk, Chase Throgden and Logan Johnson were chasing the pOints. Throgden pulled off the win. with Johnson second and Strunk third. Dylan Cox was battling for points in the 65cc (7-9). 65cc Open and 85cc (7-11) classes. Cox held the lead in both motos of both 65cc classes. Logan Mattingly charged for the second position in the 60cc Open class. Cox, Will Hawkins, Joey Crain and Blake Stumler kept the pressure on Cole Huggins in the 85cc (7 - 11) race. Huggins accepted and met the challenge from the class and won both motos. In a dynamic 85cc (12-15) contest, Dennis Crick, Shane Hayden, Justin Peyton, Jesse Young and Kelly Allen were all piling up series points. The Supermini class saw Huggins, Crick, Hayden, Peyton and Allen plowing the dirt for the points in that class. Returning from a wrist injury last November, Shawn Clark prevailed over the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes. Results 50 SHAFT: 1. Luke Emerine (Yam): 2_ Jon Ross Lowe (Vam): 3. Bailey Cox (Yam): 4. One of the most interesting contests turned out to be in the 250cc Pro division, in which AMA National number 89 Tony Amaradio took home the lion's share of the purse after winning both motos. In the first moto, Amaradio shot out front aboard his Light Speed/Bridgestone/Renthal/ Thor/Wiseco-backed Honda CR250 with a sweet holeshot. Mark Tilley tucked his Callaway Motosports/Pro Valve Motocross Race Service Honda CRF450R into second place, while Jon Simmons, Steve Drew and Paul Kellen gave chase. Over the first few laps, Amaradio was able to put about three seconds on the pack as he set a blistering pace out front. Tilley was securely in second place, while Drew and Simmons were in a heated battle for third place. While Tilley wasn't letting the leader completely disappear, by the halfway point Amaradio had stretched his advantage to nearly 10 seconds, and he was not letting up. When the checkered flag came out at the end of the 20·minute moto, Ama· radio took the win comfortably. Tilley rolled in second, while Drew made a late pass stick for third, just in front of Simmons, in fourth. Kellen filled out the top five. Things got interesting in mota two when Amaradio and Tilley slid out in the first turn and spotted the field at least a 30-second advantage before they could remount and rejoin the fray. Amaradio was relentless, and he gained on the leaders tremendously each lap. Simmons was out front, but he couldn't hold off Amaradio, and with two laps to go, Amaradio made the pass for the lead. Once out front, he continued to stretch his lead until the checkered flag came out for another mota win. Simmons was second, Tilley third, Drew fourth and Kellen fifth. On the day, the overall win went to Amaradio by virtue of his perfect 1- J showing. Tilley (2-3) took home second, while Simmons (4-2) was third. Drew (3-4) and Kellen (5-5) were fourth and fifth, respectively. In the Vet Intermediate ranks, Gary Renko took home the overall class win via his impos· sible-to-beat 2-1 tally on the day, aboard his Suzuki RM250. Steve Coster was the best of the rest, as he piloted his Yamaha YZF to 3-2 scores and second overall. KTM-mounted Tim Harris went home with the third-place honors after putting in 4-3 rides aboard his SX 380. First-mota winner Joe Melton suffered a get-off in moto two but still limped in fourth overall with a 1-6 showing, while Jim Naegle (5-7) finished up in fifth for the day. Results 65 BEG: I.
