little too hard and went down. Haehn pressured Miller for second but came up just short at the checkered flag. Former National and Supercross Champion David Bailey and his son Sean made an appearance at round two. David shared some of the announcing duties, and Sean won the combined 100cc classes. David later rode the track on his four-wheeler to take a look at the track and saw what the riders had had to deal with. "I had a good time tonight, watching these guys," David said. "It looked like a lot of fun. It was some intense racing." Pax Trax MX Park Bunnell, Florida Results: March 7, 2003 (Round 2 of 4) SO (13·17): 1. Jimmy Hayes (HOI'll; 2. Texas State Championship Enduro Circuit, Championship Division Texas State Championship Enduro Circuit, Sabine Division Rounds 2/1: Concho Enduro Faulk Brothers Shell 'em at the Concho By DAVID KLEIN BRONTE, TX, MAR. 9 Mark Faulk, on his 520 KTM, had his best race since his knee injury last year. He won the rocky Concho Enduro over fellow AA rider and protege Mark Thompson, on a Yamaha YZ250F, by a scant margin of 13 seconds in tie breakers, Every year, the host club awards the "Top Gun" revolving trophy to the winner. The trophy is an old Colt .45, and Faulk was thrilled with winning this prestigious trophy. "Winning the Top Gun trophy is a cool deal," Faulk remarked. "I have seen the gun at Cycle Town South for years and have hoped to win it one day. This year, I have great support from Cycle Town South, Moose, Thumper and Pro Clean. It makes going racing so much easier when you have a good group of people behind you. The week before the race, my bike started knocking, so I took it to the shop to have It fixed. They split the cases four times trying to figure it out. I now have a new piston, crank rod, and all bearings, and still have a knock. The mechanic looked at me and said, 'Race it - it will finish.' Well, he was right, and the bike ran great. I think this year is going to be a close race all the way to the end. Each race will come down to who makes the fewest mistakes will win." Last year's overall champion, Michael Wilson, experienced one of those mistakes at this race, '" got a flat rear tire," he recounted. "I stopped and zip-tied the tire to the rim, but in the last test, I gassed it too much, and the tire just broke loose." In the Over 40 class, a notable ride was put in by John Blythe, who placed fourth overall with 10 points. Obviously, practicing in the rocks at his Colorado home provided him with the assurance to wick it up at this rocky Texas race. The top overall B rider was Shannon Faulk, on his 250cc KTM. Shannon has been gaining speed every season, and the practice with his brother Mark is clearly paying off. The level of competition at this race was impressive. The top two finishers, Mark Faulk and Thompson, both clocked eights. Don Hogan and Blythe finished two points back with las. There were five riders with 11 points apiece, including the winner of the last race, Rick Higgins, as well as former AA rider Chad Carlisle and 2002 ISDE silver medallist Brian Storrie. Moose Team rider Cole Kirkpatrick won the 200cc A class and flnished eighth overall, beating several AA riders along the way. "Concho was an awesome ridel" Kirkpatrick enthused. "The mileage was spot on all day long. The tests were long enough to wear you out but not so long as to make the ride uncomfortable. Markings were great, and there was enough free times and resets to enjoy the views of the ranch. The 'water boy' before the last test section in front of camp was a great sight. The club went all out with that extra touch. The other clubs are going to really have to have an awesome race to change my vote for best enduro of the year!" Former Baja racer Jim Rohn managed to beat Will Hendrix in the COver 60 class by a single point. It appeared Hendrix had some difficulty with his clock, but he still managed to overcome longtime rival Kenny Otto by five points. The race was approximately 75 miles long and had well-placed checks along the way. Riders were treated to a time schedule that allowed them to take in some breathtaking vistas, and herds of exotic animals were a part of this enduro's obstacles. Having to slow or stop for a herd of buffalo or antelope is not something one usually has to deal with at most races, Some riders noted a time discrepancy at one check, but Ross Creek Trail Riders club president Bill Roe investigated and could find no problem with the check clocks. The Ross Creek Trail Riders had done some great legwork and prOVided excellent contingency prizes for this race. Sponsors for the race included Parts Unlimited, Max's Honda Kawasaki (Abilene), Family Power Sports (San Angelo), Kent's Honda (Abilene), Angelo Cycle, Designs [, More (Tuscola), and Texas MC Works (Tuscola). VP Racing Fuels deserves special mention for providing, as Roe put it, "more giveaways than I knew what to do with." Finally, when asked about the work that went into the event, Roe remarked: "I had the easy part of setting up the course. Randall Fowler handled everything else - Porta-Potties, trophies, arrows and ribbon. The whole club came together to get the course marked and the checks manned for this event." By BRIAN COMEAU Concho Enduro: Mark Faulk won the overall victory at round two of the Texas State Championship Enduro Circuit series, held In Bronte, Texas. 62 APRIL 2, 2003' eye I e n e _ s FORT WORTH, TX, FEB. 23 After several days of rain, the sun came out for round six of the STC Highlands Kawasaki/Pro Circuit Winter Series. Wet conditions probably would not have slowed Washington's Ryan Villopoto, who took advantage of the race to score some track time before the International Final in March. Villopoto dominated every class he entered, taking six moto wins and three overalls en route to a perfect weekend. Villopoto took the holeshot ahead of Tyler Wharton and Kyle Cunningh.m in the first moto of the Supermini class. Villopoto immediately opened up a small gap on the rest of the field and checked out early. Cunningham made his move on Wharton halfway through the first lap, only to give the position back when a crash slowed his pace and dropped him back in the pack. By the end of the first lap, Villopoto had built about a 10-second lead over the field, while Wharton was getting a lot of pressure from Smith/EBR/Axosponsored Michael Royal, who then passed Wharton. Royal was holding off Matt Lemoine in a race for second. ahead of Trey Canard and Sean Hackley Jr. Cunningham was making tracks to catch up to this group. Canard fell and dropped back, giving Hackley a chance to catch up and move into third, behind Royal, after swapping positions with Lemoine. Mean· while, Villopoto was gone, pulling out. huge
