California Gold Cup Motocross Series Round 5: Hungry Valley Motocross Track ~~~@UU~ ~~~~~U1J~ + Hungry Va((ey \\r:\0hat do Colby Raha, Chris WVJI Plouffe, Vincent Rhoads, Eddy Jay and Lars Lindstrom all have in common? All of them found the hardpacked, high-speed Hungry Valley Motocross Track to their liking, as they each posted double-class wins during the fifth and final round of the fifth annual Maxxis/AC Racing/Dirty Girls/Maxima-sponsored California Gold Cup Motocross Series. Paul Nelson led the first Pee Wee (7 -8) moto before Raha made the pass and continued on for the win, over Gunnar Biggerstaff, Stan Savage and Nelson. Raha returned to outrun everyone to the checkers in moto two for a sweep of the class. Biggerstaff was again the runner-up, ahead of Savage and Nelson. Raha put his Thousand Oaksbacked KTM out front early in the opening Super Pee Wee moto, ahead of Zac Commans and Daniel Overton. Overton worked his way around Raha for the win, while Garrett Jackson finished third, over Biggerstaff. Raha got the upper hand in moto two to go 2-1 for his second class win of the day. Overton was second in the moto and second overall, topping the 3-3 tally of Jackson and the 4-4 score of Biggerstaff. Tyler Sjoberg absconded with the holeshot in the first 85cc (Through 11) moto and held off Plouffe for a lap before Plouffe took control. Sjoberg went down (and eventually finished seventh) while Plouffe motored away to win with 20 seconds to spare over David Meade, Armando Aguilar and Willie Woo. Sjoberg proved his first-moto start was no fluke as he led the field for half of the second moto before Plouffe was able to make the pass. Plouffe took the win a couple of seconds ahead of Sjoberg. Woo held off a determined Hayden Commans to go 4-3 for the second-place trophy, over Sjoberg (7-2) and Commans (5-4). Plouffe turned a pair of great starts aboard his Answer/Factory Effex/Pit Pro/661-backed KX65 into runaway victories in both motos of the 65cc (9-11) class. Second place was all Aguilar's (2-2), followed by Tommy Aquino (3-3) and Commans (4-4). Rhoads made his way to the front of the pack on lap one of the first 250cc Intermediate moto and let everyone else fight over second place. Nicholas Burson put a last-lap pass on both Blake Runestad and Joshua Coffey to finish second to Rhoads. Mota two duplicated the first, in that Rhoads was quickly around a fast-starting Coffey and then slowly pulled away for the victory. Burson had his hands full with Coffey and Runestad en route to his 2-2 finishes. Things were a little bit tougher for Rhoads in the Schoolboy class, as Anthony Charette and Daniel Hendrix dogged the YZF -mounted Rhoads throughout both races to really make him work for the 1-1 score. The KTMmounted Charette finished second both times out, over Hendrix, with Andrew Rhoades (5-5) and Brandyn Travis (8-4) rounding out the top five. 42 n STORY AND PHOTOS BY GREG ROBERTSON GORMAN, CA, MAR. 9 APRIL 2, 2003' cue I e e wv s The first 250cc Pro moto turned into a five-rider battle over the lead that went all the way down to the wire, with Lindstrom getting the deed done by a couple of bikelengths over Scott Roegner, Mike Meadows, Chris Barrett and Masaki Hiratsuka. Danny Carlson suffered a poor start and could only work his way up into a sixth-place finish in moto one, but he made up for it with a wire-to-wire win in moto two to take home the second-place payback behind the 1-4 score of Lindstrom. Hiratsuka's 5-2 tally got the better of Roegner's 2-5 finishes for third overall. Lindstrom would return to argue with Meadows in both 125cc Pro motos; Lindstrom prevailed each time. Jay made the drive all the way up from San Bernardino· payoff with a four-moto sweep of the Over 25 and Over 30 Intermediate classes, aboard his CR250. Fellow Honda rider Ethan Dally finished second to Jay in the Over 25 class, ahead of Shy Moshe. Manuel Del Camp was quickest out of the gate in both Over 30 contests but couldn't hold off Jay and had to settle for a pair of second-place finishes, over Mike Licitra (5-5), Steve Bastin (7-4) and Mike Giem (6-5). eN Hungry Velley MalDcrass Treck 6anne., Celifamie Results: Merch 9, 2003 IRaund 5 of 51 P/W (4·6): 1.
