Hahn Top Koshkonong Finale By DAN SCHMm FORT ATKINSON, WI, MAR. I The sixth and final Lake Koshkonong Saturday Night Under The Lights race of the 2003 season took place at the Sunset Tavern £, Marina with warming temperatures and deteriorating ice. The normal cast of characters came to battle for cash purses and championship points. Brock Schwarzenbacher jumped off the line in the 125cc/200cc class. Jake Kaiser held second for a few laps. Then Ben Rader came up to challenge Kaiser. Jake Marx then joined the fray and moved to second. At the end, it was Schwarzenbacher first, Marx second and Rader third. Schwarzenbacher won the championship in this class. In the Over 40 final, Ken Hall parked his Rotax fiat-tracker and proceeded to teach the rest of these old dogs the fast way around this one-sixth-mile track. Using his SOOcc Honda, Halt went on to victory. Jack Kaine and Lanny Thompson were second and third. Dan Luchon, on his faithful Triumph twin, tied with Hall for this championship. In the Over 40 Pro class. Terry Hahn beat Rick Holder for first place. Riding Frankie Kaiser's new 4S0cc Honda, John Flesher led all 10 laps of the Over 50 final. Mike Dugan ran a solid second. Coming out of the last turn, Jeff Wehrli went by Dan Schmitt to take third. However, in the championship points, Schmitt held the high hand. Dugan came right back in the Vintage (pre·1980) class to win on his 500cc Honda four·stroke. Wehrli, on the 250cc Can-Am. finished second, with Luchon third. Luchon gained his second championship on his Triumph 750cc twin. Mark Schmidt became the King of the Ice. picking up his sixth straight win in the 250cc Amateur class. Randy Livingston ran a good second, with Chris Foskett in third, but nobody could match Schmidt's speed, and he took the championship. The action heated up in the 250cc Pro final. Rick Holder went wheel to wheel with Roy Nafzger and Terry Hahn, but this treacherous track gave Holder problems, and Nafzger took the win and the championship. Hahn finished second. Schwarzenbacher borrowed Lance Wollin's 450cc Yamaha to win the Open Amateur class. Scott Johnson and John Cooper shad· owed Schwarzenbacher in the 10-lap contest. Cooper fell and gave third to Rotax rider Hall. The youngster from Beaver Dam was not to be denied, and he won this race and the championship. The battle of the year was in the Open Pro race. Wollin, Hahn and Nafzger went at it for 10 laps. Frankie Kajser was right there to strike. but on the last lap, Hahn stayed on the pole and grabbed the victory. Nafzger was second. and Wollin tweaked out the championship points lead with his third·place finish. In the Dash·4-Cash finale, Cooper took full advantage of starting from the standard start line to lead this 10·lap shootout. The Pros started in tum four, and it took them eight laps to finally catch Cooper. On the lap that counted. Nafzger grabbed the lead and the win. Nafzger is the Dash-4-Cash champion for the season. Lopez still picked up the overall, and Rosales picked up second best, bumping Austin Eitel (2·3) to third overall. Brian Lopez (3-4) took fourth place. over AFAM/Thorbacked Ricky Oliver. A.J. Steinbach placed his FMF·backed CR and YZ thumpers out in front in the first motos of the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate classes, respectively, but it was evident that the broken wrist he suffered in December is not yet 100percent healed; he finished second in the first 125cc moto, behind Brandon Ellingsen. while Three Brothers Racing-backed Nick Hernan· dez stepped up to finish third. In moto two, Ryan Campbell, on his N·Style/Acerbis-backed YZ, stole the show after placing fifth in moto one. Hernandez had Campbell in his sights but couldn't make up the ground. Hernandez still picked up the overall win, while Campbell took home second best. Steinbach finished third overall, ahead of Ellingsen (1·5) and Steven Cisar (4·3). In the 250cc Intermediate class, Escondido Motorsports·backed Anthony Bruscella picked up the win in moto two for the upset over Steinbach, who had won the first moto. Steinbach finished second overall. Campbell (3-3) and Ellingsen (4-4) had their own battle in both motos and filled out the remaining positions. William Garcia and Ron Turner handed upsets to the first-mota winners in their respective classes after both returned to the line refreshed and determined to claim the allimportant second-mota win for the overall. Garcia upset Brandon Beaver (1-2) in the Over 30 Novice class, while Turner gave Doug Frankos (1·2) a run for his money in the Over 40 Master Expert class.
