CMC Copperstate Classic Motocross Championships Round 2: ET Motopark Bruner's bike died. He tried to kick it over several times and then threw his hands up in disgust. Bruner tried one more kick, and the bike started; he was able to get back into action in about 15th place. With three laps remaining, Bruner managed to pass back up to fifth by moto's end. Bruner took fourth in the second moto for fourth overall. eN ET Motopartl Queen Creek, Arizona Results: March 2. 2003 (Round 21 STORY AND PHOTOS BY ROBERT VAN DAMME QUEEN CREEK, AZ, MAR. 2 rent Davey topped the 125cc - Juniors, and Austin White won B the aocc (14-16) overall at the second round of the CMC Copperstate Classic Motocross Championships, presented by Franklin £, Associates, FMF, Steve's Cycle, and Bent Clothing. This was the CMe's first visit to ET Motopark, and track manager Tom Kokilares and his crew had to work overtime. .. Just when we had the track perfect, then it would rain," said Kokilares. "The next day, we would prep again; that night, it rained enough to have part of the track under water." By late Thursday, the sky had cleared; the crew modified some of the track, and they were able to come up with a course that took about a minute and 30 seconds for the Pros to get around. Davey pulled the holeshot in the first 125cc Junior moto. Sitting in second was Clay Higgins, with Kyle Strippleman, D.C. Jones, Alex Haag, Jeremy Johnson, Steve Schwartz. Ryan Nasser, Justin Leach and Mike Nagai folloWing. On lap two, Higgins closed down on Davey and tried a pass from the inside of turn two. Davey, having a better drive from the outside, held the position going over the tabletop jump. Johnson moved by Jones for fourth as the pack completed lap two. Ryan McPeters worked his way up into the top 10 by passing both Nagai and Leach. It took the section in front of the grandstands over the finish-line jump and two more corners before Higgins moved by Davey for the lead. Davey was racing the preferred line, as Higgins had to maneuver through the rougher lines to get in position for the pass. Higgins then held the inside line going into the corner after the finish line, forcing Davey off the fast line going into the next corner. Schwartz and Haag moved by Jones on the south side of the course for fifth and sixth. On the final lap, Johnson caught up with and tried to pass Strippleman coming out of turn two. That attempt seemed to wake up Strippleman, who for most of the moto was alone in third. Higgins took the moto win, over Davey, while Strippleman held off Johnson for third. Fifth went to Schwartz, followed by Haag, Jones, McPeters, Nasser and Robbie Witzig. The start of the second moto was a repeat of the first: Davey jumped out into first, followed by Higgins and Strippleman. As the pack came into the infield section, Strippleman moved around Higgins. Schwartz sat in fourth, followed by Ryan Bishop, Jones and McPeters. Three corners later, Higgins repassed Strippleman for second. Jones went by Bishop as they completed lap one. Davey had a three-second lead on Higgins. Strippleman sat alone in third. Then McPeters and Nagai moved around Bishop for sixth and seventh. Higgins reeled in Davey and was applying pressure. Higgins moved alongside Davey as they came out of turn two. Davey was able to control the inside into the next corner and hold off Higgins. The Kelley's Kawasaki/Motor Works-sponsored Davey held off Higgins for the moto win and the overall. Third went to Strippleman, followed by Schwartz, Jones, McPeters, Nagai, Bishop and Haag. Off the start of the second 125cc Junior moto, eventual overall winner Brent Davey (92) leads Clay Higgins (241), Kyle Strippleman (286), Steve Schwartz (341), D.C. Jones (6121 and the rest of the pack at round two of the CMC Copperstate Classic Motocross Championships. In the first aocc (14-16) moto, Higgins absconded with the holeshot, over White. Higgins had control of the point for the first two laps. Then, as the pack came through the south side of the course, Higgins pulled off with mechanical problems. White stayed clear of his nearest pursuer to take the moto win. Second went to Tyler Littlefield, followed by Daniel Huddleston, Steven Stultz and Riley Burdick. Higgins came back in the second moto with a borrowed bike and again pulled the holeshot. The Bent/Pro Circuit/Thor-backed White was in second, and he would remain there for the entire moto to garner the overall for the day. The battle for third went to Huddleston, after holding off littlefield and Stultz. Higgins was able to win one of the three classes he entered by winning both motos of the Supermini division. White took the runner-up spot in both motos, while Taylor Roberts earned a pair of thirds. The story in this class was that of Buddy Bruner, who was running second early on in the second moto when his bike developed mechanical problems. As the pack came over the finish line, Austin White (251) topped the 80cc (14-161 class at ET Motopark in Queen Creek, Arizona. eye I e n e vw s MARCH 26. 2003 63
