A bloodied Pat Garrahan soldiered on to a seventh-place finish. The next to give in to Davis' strategies was Smail. "I got behind a lapper and almost hit him and stalled my bike," Smail said. "I had a hard time getting it going again. When I saw those guys pass me while I was trying to start my bike, I was over it. 1 was so beat. I thought the best thing for me to do was to tuck in and salvage some points in fourth." Davis said, "I was surprised when I saw Smail sitting there. I've been in his shoes before, and it really takes it out of you. He should have won today. Fortunately for me everything just worked out. I rode smooth and consistent all day and was able to take the win." Coming in behind Davis was Woods, who had held on to take secnd in front of his other teammate, Pearson. Smail finished fourth, with Destry Abbott coming in fifth. Abbott has been hampered with an injured knee, so his fifth-place finish was quite an accomplishment on this demanding course. The DaViS, Woods and Pearson trio made it a Montclair YamahajZip-Ty Racing sweep of the podium. Woods was excited to have his best finish in an off-road race to date. Pearson has been on the podium a lot this year and is on top of the WORCS National point standing, but he wants to win a 14 MARcH 26, 2003 ~ c U ~ • WORCS race right now. Afterward, Davis was asked about what he thought the difference was between the young guys that were charging hard up front all day and his race of pacing himself. "What do I think?" Davis asked. "Well, us older guys have to think to stay up with these young fast guys. I wasn't the fastest out there today, but I used my head and made sure 1 was going to be there at the end. Luckily for me, it paid off, and I was able to take another win." Davis went on to say, "I am behind this series 100 percent. To me it's the premier series in the United States. Every race this year has doubled with fans and riders. I love the format and the fact that it's spectator-friendly. I thick the Hamels and their staff are doing a fantastic job, and I)mow it's going to just get better and bette." With. three rounds complete, Davis has a 10'-point lead over teammate Pearson. eN CrlIzy Horse Campgl1lUllll Lake Havasu City, Ariza.. March 16, 20113 [Round 3/51 PRO a/A: I. Ty Davis (Yam); 2.
