In the process, Hines pulled the trigger on a 7.297 second/179.28 mph run in qualifying, the best performance by a VTwin-powered motorcycle in the history of NHRA Pro Stock motorcycle racing, at Gainesville, the Pro Stock season opener. Hines' record-breaking run qualified the Screamin' Eagle V-Rod 10th, the first time the Screamin' Eagle team has earned a trip to the Sunday show. Unfortunately, G.T. Tonglet, aboard the second Screamin' Eagle/Vance & Hines V-Rod, experienced mechanical problems and did not make the cut for Sunday's show. In Sunday's first round, 19-year-old Hines had a 7.368 second/175.26 mph run, upsetting seventh-ranked Fred Collis, who was aboard a Suzuki. Hines cruised through the second round when another veteran opponent, Craig Treble, the second ranked qualifier, left early and red-lighted his Suzuki, handing the Screamin' Eagle VRod a trip to the semifinals. In the semifinal run, Hines beat Geno Scali's third-ranked Suzuki off the line and was pulling away when he experienced a transmission failure past half-track, giving up the moters due to new insurance policies c c o and liabilities. "We are so proud. of the hard work and dedication of this team: said Mike Kennedy, director of marketing Parts and Accessories. "We achieved the first of our goals, to qualify for the show and advance in the roundsWe know there's a lot of work ahead to get to wh.ere we want to be. But today we made NHRA history, and we're celebrating. " Indeed, Vance & Hines' Terry Vance was so excited with the V· Rod's performance that he caJled Cycle News on the Monday after the event to make sure we had heard of the team's success (we had). Vance said that his happiness was not in the vindication of proving that the Screamin' Eagle V-Rod could be competitive after it was such a flop last year. Rather, Vance's happiness was for his perennial partner, Byron Hines. "That guy has put two years of his life into this project: Vance said. "And to see the V-Rod become competitive after everyone told us we were crazy, I couldn't.be happier for Byron. I was also am.azed by how much the crowd reacted.
