Watt rode like a man on a mission. Needing
only one mark to advance to the 125cc B
class at the end of last season, Watt was
plagued by crashes, unable to put two good
races together, and he finished 2002 as the
SRAC 125cc Novice champion. However,
Watt was ready to move on, and on Sunday
moming he did just that, by winning first place
and earning his mark, allowing him to enter
the l25cc B class that aftemoon.
As the temperatures dropped in late after·
noon. the first race in the 125cc Pro class held
the attention of the chilled spectators by providing some exciting racing right through the
finish. Always fast and furious, several of the
Pros tested out their new Yamaha YZ250Fs in
this season opener, and the first four riders
fought for position every lap. Jared Carlson
held off fellow YZ250F rider Kevin Hall to lead
most of face one, until Hall made his move on
Carlson to take first place. Ukewise, two vet·
eran riders . Suzuki jockey John Murray and
Wayne Balliett, on yet another YZ250F - battled it out for third; Balliett beat Murray in the
first race; but Murray beat Balliett in the sec~
and go-around. Murray not only beat Balliett
in race two but took Hall also for a secondplace finish. Meanwhile, Carlson also came
back, got out in front and kept it there. At the
end of the day, Carlson prevailed for first overall, Hall took second, and Murray finished in
third.

Stovin Strong
at CALVMX Opener
By STEVE CARO
ANZA, CA, FEB. 15
Expert-ranked Ed Stovin put on a strong
performance in the Grand Prix Two Expert
division at the CALVMX season opener.
Maico-mounted Stovin engaged in two racelong duels with Suzuki jockey Doug Nicol in
the highly competitive class.
At the drop of the starting gate for the first
moto, Stovin grabbed the holeshot coming out
of the first turn, with Nicoi close behind. By
the end of lap one, Nicol had found a line
around Stovin to take over the lead. For the
next three laps, Nicol and Stovin engaged in a
tight battle. Both riders were easily clearing
the numerous tabletop jumps and storming
through the rutted comers. At the checkered
flag, Nicol held on to his slight lead for the victory, with Stovin a very close second. Maicomounted Dave Harris was a distant third.
The start of moto two saw Nicol grab the
lead as the pack funneled into the first uphill
sweeper. Close behind him were Stovin and
Harris. At the end of lap two, Stovin utilized
the famous cornering ability of his German
machine to power his way around Nicol just
past the finish-line jump. By the end of the
fourth lap, Stovin, his bright orange helmet
clearly visible from the sidelines. had built a
substantial lead over Nicol and Harris. At the
checkers, it was Stovin with the overall,
followed by Nicol and Harris.
In the Grand Prix Over 40 Intermediate
diVision, Maico-mounted Bob Toman put on a
masterful display of riding ability as he swept
to victories in both motos. In moto one,
Honda-mounted Eric Thaanum grabbed the
lead at the start. Near the middle of lap two,
Yamaha-mounted Dennis Carlock got around
Thaanum on the back half of the track. While
this battle raged up front, Toman was working
his way up from a midpack start. By lap four.
Toman had worked his way past Yamaha rider
Tony Kirkpatrick, Thaanum and Carlock to
take over the lead. By the end of the moto,
Toman had the victory. followed by Carlock
and Kirkpatrick.
In moto two, Thaanum again led the pack
through the first few turns. Entering the front
straight, Toman powered his way around
Thaanum on the outside to take over the point
position. Toman had built an insurmountable
lead by lap three. Behind him, the battle for
second raged between Carlock and Yamaha·
mounted Brian Backer. These two repeatedly
swapped positions for the rest of the moto. At
the finish, Toman took the overall, followed by
Carlock and Backer.
With the fate of its home track, Carlsbad
Raceway, still undecided, the board members
of the California Vintage Motocross club were
left searching for a suitable track for their second-season opener, Thanks to the generosity
of Bob Harvell, his grandson Dan, and the rest
of the staff, Cahuilla Creek MX Park proved
the perfect facility.
