(Below right) Though Shane Esposito (shown) and Destry Abbott led early in the Pro Team race, they found themselves unable to match the pace and would settle for third. (Below) Nathan Woods rolls up to accept a "well done" tap from partner Ty Davis after they earned the Pro Team victory. Desert's Silver State Series, with the Pro Team race the highlight of the weekend in that regard. Of course, Abbott might argue that his win in Saturday's Pro race (for individual riders and not a BITD points race) netted him a big chunk of the $14,000 purse - substantially more than the Pro Team event. (Abbott also won the Unclassified race on Saturday morning to become one of three two-class winners, despite riding with a torn meniscus; the others were Campbell in Four-Stroke Expert and Vet Expert, and Hengeveld in Dual-sport Expert and Open Expert.) (Above) Adelanto is a Desert Vipers M.e. event, so what better way to commemorate that than to take your own desert viper to the race as "Bultaco Bob" did? He kept the snake in a small cage during his visit from Vegas. "It's a great atmosphere," Campbell said of the weekend. Though the Desert Vipers shortened the traditional course - bypassing many of the usual city streets so much more of it was in the dirt - RVs, spectators and vendors still lined up along its length and filled the pit area/motocross track just two blocks west of U.S. Highway 395. "I was pretty happy with all my results all weekend long and how everything turned out," Hengeveld added. He wasn't the only one who felt that way; even the many hundreds who failed to win seemed happy just to be eN a part of weekend's festivities. (Above left) Steve Hengeveld had a busy weekend. He got a pair of third-place finishes and a fifth on Saturday then won two and got second on Sunday. OVER 30 EX; 1. Johnny Compbell (Hon); 2. Ty Davis (Yam); 3. Scott Myers. OVER 35 EX: 1.
