AMA District 37 Desert C'ship Series Round 3: 4 Aces MC Hare & Hound Jones Holding All the Aces By KANDY THORNTON RED MOUNTAIN, CA, FEB. 9 Desert racing has to be one of the few sports in which participants actually look forward to aging, because it means they will be the new kids on the block when they bump into a new age bracket. Keith Jones is the "young gun" in the Magnum (Over 50) 250cc Expert class in District 37, and he has dominated so far this year, winning his division in the first three races of the series. Jones was sucking dust after a two-kick start at the 4 Aces Hare Eo Hound in Red Mountain, California, but he recovered quickly after finding a good line that helped him funnel onto the course in a good position. "The 4 Aces had a well-marked first loop," Jones stated later. "It was faster than I like, but doable. The second loop had some great single-track, fresh trails, and the Prospector's waterfall. " Jones never felt pressure from anyone in his class, but the SLO Plastering/MotoWest/ESR-sponsored Gas Gas pilot felt a sense of deja vu out on the course. "I found myself dicing with myoid class members, and it was definitely more fun than when they were in my class!" exclaimed Jones. The top overall finishers for the day were Steve Hengeveld, Paul Krause, Mike Childress, Chris Blais and Sean Bradley. The 4 Aces awarded holeshot bonuses, and Hengeveld, Chris Ray, Matt Kearney and Scott Goff were the "Aces in the Hole" for the Expert, Amateur, Novice and Beginner lines, respectively. it? As America's only weekly motorcycle publication, we're the only thing you get thm you even realize IS late! (When was the last time you knew your monthly magazine was a week later than usual?) Most Cycle News subscriptions arc delivered via 2nd Class mail. The bulk of what you pay for on your annual subscription is postage. You are paying for better delivery than what you have been recei"ing... why? Around the beginning of 1997, the U.S. Postal Service reclassified all publications into what they call "Periodicals" for the purposes of delivery speed. That means they now lump your Cycle News in with alllhe monthly publicatIOns and deliver them with lhe same urgency (or lack of urgency). All Cycle News can do on our end is get the paper shipped immediately after each weekend's events, and into the mail system, whIch we do, every Tuesday morning, without fail (except on weeks with a Monday holiday, then we print Tuesday and ship your paper on Wednesday morning). After that. it's out of our hands, and you need to register your delivery complaint with the U.S. Postal Service, not us. We're as fruslrat· ed as you are, and until there's some better method (at a reasonable cost) to get your Cycle News delivered quicker, we're all stuck wilh the same problem.
