Sunset Tavern & Marina: Bob Smith (4) leads Mike Dugan (behind Smith) and Dan Schmitt (45) at the start of the Over 50 class at the fourth round of Saturday Night Ice Racing Under The Lights action on Lake Koshkonong in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. line, and he couldn't maintain the speed to prevail. While he was putting on a great show, Roy Naflger and Terry Hahn battled to the line; Naflger got there first. Bill Martin was third and Mick Durham fourth. Riding his brand·new Yamaha YZ250F, Mark Schmidt again smoked the field in the 250cc Amateur class. John Stewart tried every line to gain on Schmidt but had to settle for second. Jamison Stachel won the battle for third, ahead of Aaron Hodge. Nahger and Hahn ran to the front of the 250cc Pro final on their Kawasakis. Local hero Lance Wollin borrowed a four-stroke 250cc Yamaha and slipped by Hahn on the third lap. Smulders also got by Hahn and went after the leaders. At the checkers, it was Nafzger, Wollin and Smulders. Brock Schwarzenbacher went to the front in the Open Amateur class, but he fell while leading, taking Zack Martin with hlm. Stewart took full advantage and took the win. John Cooper came in second, and Tim Bares was third. Borrowing the injured Frankie Kaiser's 450cc Honda, Wollin was ready for the Open Pro class. In a bar-to bar battle for the lead, Wollin and Naflger checked out and ran their own race up front. Wollin was in front on the lap that counted. After Schwarzenbacher's Open Amateur fall, promoter Gimmer took pity on the young· ster and let him start the Dash-4-Cash from the normal starting line, while Nafzger charged from tum four. With ice flakes flying at the end of this 10-lap conflict, it was the old Pro taking all the cash in this winner-take-all race. Results 12.5/200: I. Tyl« Smul&!rs: 2. Brandon Griffith: 3. EI Cajon MX Park The Day After By HOMER EUBANKS EL CAJON, CA, FEB. 9 The El Cajon motocross "practice track" was again turned into a race track, and 200 riders attended the event billed as "The Day After Supercross." With this much local talent showing up, the racing was fast and furious. And the Pro action was hotter yet, as Pro winners Chris Wheeler and Dustin Nelson traded wins in the two Pro events. The organizers chose a one-mota format for the Pro classes. When the gate dropped for the 10 250cc Pro riders, a lot of shuffling went on in the first quarter-lap. Craig Smith, in fourth, appeared to be on the move until he 62 MARCH 5. 2003· cue I • was rammed from the rear; he and his new KTM went tumbling down the track. Wheeler gained control of the pack, while Josh Tarantino and Tim Beatty battled for second. Back in seventh was Nelson, who was turning the throttle on his four-stroke Yamaha. A former four-stroke champion, Nelson used the next 10 laps to pick off one rider after another until he ran out of time while running second. Things turned around for Nelson in the 1250c Pro event. He made a perfect start and set the pace. Once ahead of the pack. he pulled away from Wheeler and Cory Macomber. After 11 laps, it was Nelson, Wheeler and Macomber. David Meyers has proved he's hard to beat on any racetrack. The EI Cajon track was no exception. Meyers rode in both the 125cc Intermediate and 125cc Collegeboy (16-24) events. In all four matos, it was Meyers at the checkered flag. Although he's fast, Meyers had to earn his wins, as some serious competition came from Justin Herrmann in both 125cc events. In the final Collegeboy event, Herrmann excited the crowd with several attempts at the lead, but Meyers came back after each attempt to capture the overall .. Meyers wasn't as lucky in the 250cc Intermediate event. He went down, handing the eventual win to Greg Luna. Meyers also allowed Lars Larson to grab second before getting back into the action. In the following mota, Meyers made a direct line to the checkered flag, but the overall went to Luna. Meyers had.to settle for second. Mike Fermoile rode his Honda to repeat wins in both the 85cc (0-16) Supermini and 85cc (12-13) classes. Luke Brehm chased Fermoile in both of the 12-13 motos to earn second overall. In the first Supermini moto, Fermoile had to hold off Tommy Madden for the win. In the second moto, Fermoile checked out on the pack, leaving the runnerup spot to be decided among the other riders. In this race, Madden couldn't match his earlier pace and finished fourth. Clayton Murillo finished second. and Jordan Burns grabbed third. Colt Hubbs earned wins in the 65cc (9-12) and (0-12) Super Junior classes, despite competition from Shayne Sloan and Jordan Bums in the 9·12 class. Bums went 3-2 on the day for second overall, with Sloan third. Hubbs took repeat wins from Chris Cuero in the Super Junior division. Results 50 (0-9) F{T; I. Mason Doggett (KTM); 2. Cortinez and Nevarez, and then came a determined Lowenthal, who was fending off the rest of the pack. Raible's lead continued to gro\ll as he rode incredibly smoothly. considering the roughness of the soft soil. At the checkers, it was Raible, Bell, Green and Lowenthal. As the gate fell for moto two, Bell again snared the holeshot, over Raible, Green, Lowenthal, Cervantes, Cortinez, Nevarez and the rest of the pack. Raible hounded Bell until lap two, when he made the pass over a large tabletop. By lap three, Raible had again_ exfended his lead over Bell, Green, and the tightly knit pack of Cervantes, Cortinez, Lowenthal and Nevarez. Raible again rckle_ incredibly smoothly on the increasinglyrougher course, and he pulled his lead out to a commanding 15 seconds. Raible took the checkers over the consistent Bell and Green. After a rag1ng battle between Cortinel an'd Cervantes, Cortlnel got the nod for fourth. • The top five overall positions went to Raible (1-1), Bell (2-2), Green (3-3), .Cortine.< (5-4) and.Lowenthal (4-6). . ~ " The local rock radio station was on hand the track, performing a Ilve remote. broadcast to show thal the great sport of motocross Is alive and well in Victorvill'e, Many spectators and riders were treated to music and intermittent interviews from the deejay, all bro'adc~ live on the radio. Chase O'Neil; 3.-Juatin Raible Rails at VMC By JASON DUBIN VICTORVILLE, CA, FEB. 15 After several straight days of rain of almost Biblical proportions across Southem California, the Victorville Motocross Complex was left a quagmire as the fourth round of the VMC Winter Series drew near. Track owners Lee and Tammy Saul, along with George Robles, had their work cut out for them on Friday, as the race was set to go off on Saturday mom· ing. As the bikes filed in Saturday morning, everyone was surprised to find the track in good condition, with the exception of a few ruts. The track conditions proved to be perfect for Blaze Raible, who tore to a two-moto sweep of the 65cc Beginner class. As the 65cc Beginners rounded the first tum, Raible absconded with the holeshot, over new Suzuki pilot Crash Bell, Connor Green, Nicholas Cervantes, Trey Nevarez, Daniel Cortinel, Daniel Lowenthal and the rest of the field. Cortinel was the first of this freight train to move forward, as he powered his way into fourth by lap two. By lap three, Raible had a I3-second lead over Bell, who in turn had a lead over Green.
