CMC Golden State Nationals South Round 2: Glen Helen Raceway Park Both Kyle Partridge (left) and Ryan Villopoto (right) earned three class victories at round two of the CMC Golden State Nationals South. from Decker up front. A midpack start left him still running 12th at the end of lap three, but he then started to push hard, and by the end of lap nine he had marched right up to the tailpipe of Richie Owens, who had just taken over second on his Team Green Kawasaki when Eide stumbled. It didn't take long - less than a lap, in fact - for Siebler to gain second, but by then Decker was just too far ahead. In the 125cc Pro contest, Siebler got a better drive at Decker from the start. Instead of battling for the lead, though, they were tussling over runner-up honors, behind Motoworld Racing Yamaha rider Dustin Nelson, who was in control from the beginning. Siebler and Decker took turns running second, flopping back and forth until late in the contest, when Decker finally shook him loose and set his sights on the front-runner. Kicking out the jams, Decker closed on Nelson in the final few tours, and when the checkered came out he was only a few feet behind - denied another double. With a multitude of classes being run, triple-class winners are becoming commonplace, but this weekend's field of nearly 600 participants had for the first time at any major CMC event - two riders picking up a trio of triumphs. Ryan Villopoto and Kyle Partridge each bagged three aces in some of the most competitive classes, a fact that magnifies their efforts. And both went home with three of the largest STORY AND PHOTOS BY JOHN BETHEA SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JAN. 19 lr' he CMC's 2003 version of the U FMF/Transworld MX Golden State Nationals South has quickly turned into a parade of "firsts." The first round was the first time ever that a Golden State National had part of its program run under the lights. This week, at round two at Glen Helen Raceway Park, not one but two riders pulled off triple victories - in a darkness-shortened program that saw the final few classes have to postpone their second set of motos to the next round. Also, this day marked the first time ever at any CMC event that the Pros were scheduled to race only one (longer) moto instead of the usual two. Last week's twin killer, Craig Decker, looked as though he was going for a repeat when the first 12-lap 250cc Pro event took off. Mounted on the Fly- and Gaernesponsored Kawasaki, Decker took control early and was never headed. Honda rider Dennis Stapleton was running strong in second for the first half of the race until he fell to the wayside in the late stages and eventually took ninth. Early on, his primary foe was Mid-Cities TMR Honda rider Jeff Eide, who was running as high as second place on lap nine when he, too, fell off the pace, eventually winding up sixth in the field of 23. It was Team Suzuki jockey Cole Siebler who tried to steal the attention trophies, but they nearly matched each other by leading from start to finish in all six motos. Well, nearly: Villopoto did indeed have a perfect day, putting his Spy Kawasaki atop the lap sheets for all his 20 laps while winning the 80cc Supermini, 80cc Open and 80cc (14-16) classes. In his wake most of the day was Axo/JM Racing's Honda battler Robert Memoli, who was runner-up in both the Open and (14-16) contests and third, behind Kawasaki jockey Trent Pugmire, in the Supermini event. However, Partridge's near-sweep had only one blemish: his very first race of the day, when he trailed Micky Griffin on the first lap of the 250cc Intermediate contest. However, he took over the lead by the second lap and was never behind for the remainder of the day, sweeping to victories in the 250cc and 125cc Schoolboy classes on his American Suzuki and then topping his 125cc Intermediate contingency qualifier before winning the A Division main. Like Memoli, Michael LaPaglia spent nearly all his time in second place, trailing Partridge in both the 250cc and Schoolboy events and settling for fourth in the 125cc Intermediates, making it nearly a sweep for the U.S. Suzuki teamsters.
