IIIMY OWN RACE:
04 ANDREA DOVIZIOSO
5TH MOTOGP
"Unfortunately, today didn't go as I
had hoped," Andrea Dovizioso said.
"In the first race, I had problems with
the res, and I didn't have the right
feeling to ride well. Fortunately, with
the restart, we could make a differ-
ent re choice, and this allowed me
to find back the sensa ons to which
I was used to. Despite this, in the
second race, I was not fast enough on
the corner exit, and this prevented me
from recovering. We will have to work
well to improve this aspect to be more
compe ve on the other racetracks
as well."

It was a race of two halves
and one Suzuki's Joan Mir will
want to forget as the Suzuki man
had built up a lead of over two
seconds when Maverick Vinales'
brakes failed at the end of the front
straight, the Spaniard jumping from
his factory Monster Energy Ya-
maha at over 130 mph with the bike
continuing at pace. It slammed
into the air fence on the outside of
the track, setting itself and the air
fence alight and causing a red flag
and full restart over 12 laps.
Mir had, until that point, ridden
perfectly, gradually pulling clear of
Miller and LCR Idemitsu Honda's
Takaaki Nakagami.
At the restart, Mir was unable
to fit a new front tire, having used
up his tire allocation for the meet-
ing. As such, he used a new rear
and the same front, and couldn't
sustain the pace of Miller and
Espargaro. He would become
embroiled in a race with three-
time Red Bull Ring winner Andrea
Dovizioso (Ducati Team), eventu-
ally breaking free from the Italian
for fourth place.
Dovizioso came home fifth, the
first time Ducati has been defeat-
ed at the Red Bull Ring.
It was a miserable day for the
Yamaha factory. Along with Vina-

"I was losing the brakes from lap four
onwards," Maverick Vinales said.
"I tried my best. I tried to overtake
Dovizioso, and I did overtake him, but
suddenly on the straight he overtook
me again. These have been three
really tough races where we could
have done a really good job, but due
to our mistakes we're not at the front.
For sure, today's crash was amazing. I
never had that feeling before, where
I completely lose the brakes and
have to jump off. I understand how it
happened, the brake overheated, but
for sure it's not a common problem.
Luckily, I'm okay."
The rider you had to feel sorry for was
Joan Mir (36). Like Pol Espargaro a
week before, Mir was pulling clear
of the chasing pack when the red
flag came out for Maverick Vinales'
crash. And like Espargaro, he didn't
have the tires to make a final push
at the restart for the win. He came
home fourth overall, but his two races
in Austria have shown his time is
approaching fast.
