Sunset Tavern and Marina: Kawasaki jockey Ben Rader charges in the 250cc Amateur class at the second Saturday Night Under The lights race on Lake Koshkonong near Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. Terry Hahn took his first win of the evening in the Over 40 Pro race. Rick Holder took rider Zach Olliff and then Allison Durden, on her Bellamy Motorsports-backed Kawasaki. Olliff and Durden gave it all they had but could not shake the smooth-riding Thornton. The group ended up in the order they started, with Thornton first, Olliff second and Durden third. The 85cc class saw the same fast threesome of Thornton, Olliff, and Durden lining up to do battle once again. Thornton again nailed the start and rode hard to the checkers. Olliff was able to hold down second, and Durden came in a close third. The other double-class winner of the day was Garth Brow, who came out on top in both the Open Pro and Dash For Cash races. The Open Pro event featured a great threeway battle among Brow, Rayco Communications rider Chase Sconyers, and Tilley HarleyDavidson ace Timmy Mitchell. The three stayed in a tight group for several laps. Brow was on fire out front and eventually pulled out a comfortable lead. Sconyers fought off all attacks from Mitchell and held on for second. Mitchell had to settle for the third spot. Noot Irvin dominated 250cc-505cc Pro action on his Augusta Harley-Davidsonl Thumbs Up RacinglJeff Henry-sponsored machine. Sconyers stayed close in the opening laps but was unable to keep the blisteringly fast pace Irvin was setting out front. Irvin took the win, followed by Sconyers, and Bubba Seyle was third. Irvin's Augusta Harley-Davidson teammate "Tadpole" Pulliam captured the gold in the Open Amateur class, aboard his PBW-tuned second. Local hero Mark Schmidt continued his winning ways by taking his four-stroke 250cc Yamaha to the front in the 250cc Amateur final. Randy Livingston tried to catch Schmidt but had to settle for second. Rader took another third. There was a three-way fight in the 250cc Pro final. It came down to Terry Hahn and Lance Wollin after Blake Young crashed in tum four. Wollin was on Schmidt's four-stroke 250cc Yamaha and just couldn't get Hahn at the line. Frankie Kaiser brought his Yamaha in third. In the Open Amateur final, Schwarzenbacher ran 10 perfect laps on his 450cc Honda. Schmidt and Aaron Hodge battled for second, with Schmidt prevailing. Young, on a 450cc Honda, charged to the lead in the Open Pro final. Westhouse worked his way through the pack to challenge the youngster for the lead. Westhouse took a few laps to study the lines of the Wisconsin rider. and on the sixth lap he struck. Driving under Young in one and two, he led down the back straight. Young came back on the outside on the next lap. Westhouse used his move to take the lead again on the white-flag lap and stayed in front to the checkers. Wollin was third and Hahn fourth. In the Dash For Cash, Schwarzenbacher started on the normal starting line; qualifying Pros Hahn, Young and Kaiser started in tum three. Schwarzenbacher ran three perfect laps, and the win was apparently his - until the rut in turn three took him out. Two laps later, Young went down. and Hahn easily rode to his third victory of the evenjng. Pulliam met strong resistance on the road to victory, in the form of Stokes Automotive teammates Seyle and Eddie Stokes. Stokes showed Pulliam a wheel on more than one occasion, but with Seyle breathing down his neck, Stokes was unable to stray too far from the preferred line. In the end, Pulliam was the winner, with Stokes next and Seyle taking the last podium spot. Ken Davis rode his Yamaha to victory in the Vintage class. Terry Scoggin held down second, and Frank Mclane captured third on his Monticello Farms machine. Skeeter Williams put in a great ride to finish a respectable fourth. Results 50: I. Swainsboro Flat Track Thornton Takes Two BY JAY IRVIN SWAINSBORO, GA, FEB. 1 Alabama flat-track sensation Miles Thornton took double-class wins at Swainsboro Flat Track's opening race of 2003. Thomton piloted his Central Alabama Motorsports machine to convincing wins in the 65cc and 85cc classes. He was one of only two riders to put together double-class wins on the day. In 65cc action, Thornton grabbed the holeshot, followed closely by CO. ASHWORTH PAITERSON ORANGEVALE, CA, JAN. 18 The 24th annual District 36 awards banquet celebrated the 2002 Moose Northem California Championship Enduro Series and the 2002 Moose Westem Regional Cross Country Championship Series champions with a sellout crowd of more than 325 participants. The Enduro Series Championship went to Billy Russell, and the number-one Cross Country Series plate was given to Brian Sperle. Both title holders received special recognition and sponsorship awards from KTM, along with their other trophies. Several series contestants made multiple trips to the awards podium, as they accepted trophies in more than one class or scored top awards in both the Enduro Series and the Cross Country Series. The most notable of the dual series honors, eamed only by dedication and hard work, belonged to the pair of firstplace titles in the A 200cc class won by Ryan Gouldthread and the pair of A Super Seniorclass first-place finishes claimed by Peter Prichard. Besides the series awards, many special awards were presented during the evening. Kawasaki T earn Green honored Heather Wilson for winning both the AMA National Hare Scrambles Women's title and the Grand National Cross Country Women's title. D36 also presented Wilson with the first Bent Rim Award for earning the pair of National Championships. The third annual Jim Hutzler Award for outstanding contributions to motorcycling was given to Wade and Kathy T uma, who, unfortunately, were not able to be present to accept the award. The AMA's Terry Lee Cook presented Sergeant Ken Heuser with a National Political Action Award for his endless efforts to keep dirt-biking activities from being wiped out by lawsuits filed by environmentalist groups. Lifetime Membership awards for volunteer service above and beyond the call of duty were presented to Edd and Barb Haymond, and the first official designation of District Chaplain was given to Fred Sumrall. Other series awards presented during the evening went to racers from both Motul's BIC Enduro Championship Series and Motul's BIC Spring and Fall Cross Country Championship Series.
