STORV AND PHOTOS BV CRAIG JOHNSON BITHLO, FL, JAN. 18-19 he weather was rather cold for mid-January and especially for central Florida's Motocross World, site of round four of the 32nd annual Florida Winter Am Series. Riders from across the United States and overseas braved the elements. One rider who heated up the track and came away with two firsts and two seconds on the weekend was Bryan Johnson. The Kawasaki rider placed first in the 125cc A class and second in the 250cc/500cc A class on Saturday and then backed that up on Sunday by taking the 250/500cc Pro-class win and second overall in the 125cc Pro class. In the 125cc A class, Johnson closed the points gap between himself and rival Nick Adams. By the end of the day, only seven points separated the two riders. Adams took the first moto, over Johnson, after a heated battle. The two went at it again in moto two, but Johnson turned the tables on Adams, making him think that it was going to go to the last round for the championship. Paul Perebijnos and Leo Candious battled both motos for the last podium spot; Perebijnos came out on top in the final moto. Barry Carsten rounded out the top five overall with two fifths. Adams was ready to put the 250cc/500cc A-class championship out of reach. A 17 -point gap separated Adams and Johnson. Adams put it to Johnson in both motos, ending the day with a 20-point lead. Only a catastrophe would prevent Adams from winning this championship. Perebijnos and Fernando Macia followed the two riders in each moto, and Karsten Butler used a 6-5 tally to take fifth. In the 250cc/500cc Pro class, consistency was the key. Johnson did not win a moto but placed second T 40 FEBRUARY 19, 2003' cue I Ricky Renner raced to victory In the 85cc Junior Mini (9-13) and 85cc (12-13) classes at Motocross World in Blthlo, Florida. both times out and won the overall. Johnson was out of the running for the championship, but he moved into third in points by the end of the day. Adams won the first moto, and Johnson followed him home in second. Denmark's Grand Prix contender Brian Jorgenson finished third, ahead of Brian Gray and Carsten. In moto two, Gray turned up the wick, beating Johnson and Adams. Carsten finished fourth, ahead of Yamaha rider Jesse Richards. Gray won the overall in the 125cc Pro class with a 1-2 score, ahead of Johnson's 3-1 tally. Adams finished second the first time out but suffered a DNF the second time, dropping him into a tie for second-place points with Johnson. Gray looked like he was going to win the championship with a 19-point lead going into the final round. Tyler Tiffany put in a terrific ride on his home track to upset some very good riders in the 85cc (14-15) class. Tiffany went out and won the first moto over series contender Kyle Meeks. Canada's Kevin Benoit finished third, ahead of series leader Kyle Tobin. There was no stopping Tobin in moto two, and the Suzuki rider won, over Tiffany. Meeks outran e n • vv s Benoit for third, and Zack Alkire rounded out the top five with two fifthplace finishes. Matt Goerke is another rider who calls Motocross World home. The young rider went out and flat beat series leader Josh Lichtle for the 125cc Bclass win. Goerke won both motos, as Lichtle could only manage a 2-3 tally. Shaun Skinner only managed a fifth in moto one but mixed it up with Goerke and Uchtie in moto two to place second. Matt Boni finished fourth overall with a 3-5 tally, and Kyle Chisholm, who usually runs close to the front, only managed a 7-6 score for fifth overall. Matthew Crown likes to ca.1I this track his "home away from home." The Michigan rider made his first appearance of the series in the Over 30 and 35 classes. Crown took double-moto wins in the Over 35 class, beating Leo Candious, Timothy Eggers and John Camelio. Marc Tiesler rounded out the top five overall with a 6-5 score. Sarah Whitmore, also from Michigan, made her first appearance and took double-moto wins in the Women's class. Whitmore beat out series leader Marisa Hampshire in both motos to take the win. Hometrack favorite Kirsten Banka was third each moto, beating out local rider Ashley Jackson. Wisconsin's Cherissa Loire took fifth overall with two fifth-place finishes. One more newcomer to this year's series was Les Burnside. The Florida rider put it to series leader Mark Thomas in the Over 45 class.
