Jason m Q® ~~ Own Race: 250cc Paul Carpenter 9th White Bros./Shift Honda's SX newbie had his best showing of the year, and it may have been rus last [see Briefly... ]. "The main event kind of didn't go as I wanted it to, but it went good - a ninth-place finish I guess is nothing to sneeze at, but I definitely think I should've finished up farther - I think I was faster than that," he said. "I rode strong, I felt good, I felt strong, and I'm looking forward to doing some more supercross - I don't know when I'll get a chance, but I'm looking forward to it." ®~ Michael Byrne ~® Heath Voss 4th Byrne was Amsoil/Chaparral Honda's only 250cc rider in the absence of Mike laRocco. "I got a great start again, which helps," he said. "You get out front and run with these guys and it makes the job a lot easier. You can take your own lines and run consistent, solid laps without running into everybody. I'm happy - I'm really happy. I'm just really looking forward to next weekend now." 7th This was the best night of the year for the Mach 1 Yamaha team. "I was tight tonight," Mach 1's Voss said. "I just couldn't get loose. I was right on Ferry for about six, seven laps; he had crashed and got back up, and I was right on him. I was doing all I could to just stay with him - I couldn't pass him - but it was a great race for me." ~ CO Stephane Roncada 8th SeBe Suzuki's only active 250cc rider is improving every week. "Tonight, I got a good start, but I got together with Ezra, and we both crashed, and I came back from dead last to eighth, so... I had a good ride," he said. "1 felt pretty good out there, and I feel better than last week so it's improving. I was just pissed that I crashed because I was picked to be in the top five." co f§3 Timmy Ferry 6th Yamaha's Ferry switched back to his trusty four-stroke for San Diego, and he had third wrapped up before a crash dropped him back. "Overall, it was pretty good," he said. "I only rode once this week, and actually probably only like half a day after the crash last weekend. Sixth is not what I wanted; I would've liked to stay in that third spot, but I'll just come back next weekend and try a little harder." ~71 Nick Wey ~~ Ernesto Fonseca co CO Ezra Lusk 5th Wey had his best 250cc ride ever in San Diego. "That was my first fifth, and I think I could've done a bit better, but I'm pumped with a fifth, and I can't say enough about the people helping me," Mach 1's Wey said. "Tonight, a couple guys crashed off the second tum there, and I was in the right place at the right time, and I passed a bunch of guys up the inside, and I just kind of rode my own race. I ended up fifth, which is pretty good for me. I'm just trying to take it one step at a time." 12th Honda's Fonseca suffered a couple of pretty bad falls in the main and had his right hand wrapped after the event. "I don't even know which crash [the injury] was from, the first or the second one," he said. "I guess I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. I was trying to pass Heath Voss, and he was actually slowing me down, and then he just cuts in front of me, and I don't even know if he knew I was there, but it's just tough. I don't know if it's just bad luck or bad decisions, or I don't know what it is, really." 10th "It just didn't go very well," Chevy Trucks Kawasaki's Lusk said. "We have been trying to make a few changes to the bike, trying to get to work a little bit better here and there, in the whoops and stuff like that. We're just trying to get it dialed in, and the few changes that we've made... I'm just not real comfortable with it. I've got to, I guess, get a little bit more comfortable. The start went pretty good, but about the third turn, Roncada took me and a few more guys out with a little bit of a banzai move. It's not the first time, but I guess that I shouldn't have been back there." 10 FEBRURY 19, 2003' .. U .. I e n _ _ so (Yam): 8. Zeb Armstrong (Hon); 9, Kris Papworth (Kaw): 10. Upcoming Rounds: Round 9/7 - Minneapolis, Minnesota, February 15 Round 10/8 - Indianapolis, Indiana, February 22 !XJ®1!i!l LffJD@W @®fJ Qualifying LffJD@[f@ TItle rivals Ricky Carmichael and Chad Reed each won their respective heat races, with Reed's romp coming first. The Aussie won his heat race by more than 12 seconds, but Carmichael answered Reed's speed in the second heat with a race time barely over a second faster. The one second that separated the two riders over their respective eight-lap events left many salivating at the thought of the two getting out front early together in the main. Emesto Fonseca, Paul Carpenter and Ezra Lusk all qualified behind Reed in the first heat. "I really want to win," Reed said. "I feel like I'm getting closer and closer, and every weekend's just a lot of fun, and I'm just working towards that number-one goal, which is to get race wins. There's 20 laps, and they're the only 20 that count. As long as you get there, that's all that matters. Tonight I just wanted to bring Anaheim I back into my riding, you know? Just go out and get the holeshot and charge away." Coming home more than nine seconds behind Carmichael in the second heat were impressively fast David Vuillemin, who started fourth, Michael Byme and Stephane Roncada. "It's going to be a good race," Carmichael said of the upcoming main event. "I've won plenty of these things, and I just want to go and do the best that I can do, and that's all that I can ask for." Both semis were actually won by the two Mach 1 Yamaha riders Heath Voss and Nick Wey. Chasing Voss home were Larry Ward, Damon Huffman, Bobby Bonds and Keith R. Johnson. Apparently you had to be Yamaha-mounted in order to qualify out of semi two, as was demonstrated by winner Wey, Greg Schnell, Ryan Clark, Timmy Ferry and Brock Sellards. The LCQ belonged to Casey Lytle for the second week in a row, while Clark Stiles got the last transfer to the main event.
