Flint Me Big Brothers/Big Sisters Professional Indoor Ice Race Series Round Z: IMA Arena Wyskiel Walks AllOver 'em By BART NEWMAN FLINT, MI, JAN. 25 Mark Wyskiel had a night to remember, as he went six for six in the second round of the 43rd annual Professional Indoor Motorcycle Ice Race Series, held at Flint, Michigan's IMA Arena. Wyskiel won five heat races in championship style, putting his Byron Molloseau/Sea Way Painting/T.O. Design Honda on the pole for the final. He didn't waste that opportunity, either. winning the final race of the night as well. Round·one winner Craig Pickett won three heats during the night's festivities, losing heat eight to Wyskiel after a tight battle. Pickett grabbed the holeshot, only to be run down by Wyskiel with one lap to go. After a rough first round, eight·time series champion Chuck Springsteen was back on his A game, winning three heat races and finishing runner-up in two other heats to fellow front-row rider Corey McDermitt and 2002 champion Pat Buchanan. McDermitt, who's beginning to show his true speed in only his second professional season on the ice, won two heat races and scored points in all five of his heat races. Row two of the final had Andy Springsteen on the pole after scoring a pair of heat·race wins and points in every set of heat races he rode. The younger of the Springsteen boys is coming on strong and will soon be a contender for the title if his improvement continues. Brian Villella had a strong night, scoring points in each of his heats and grabbing two wins along the way, which put him in the middle of row two. Buchanan dug himself a hole in the heat races, finishing out of the points in one heat, placing the big number-one Honda in the cen· ter of the second row. Jack Mayer was the last rider to make it djrectly to the main event out the heat races. 46 FEBRUARY 19, 2003' cue I e IMA Arena: Mark Wyskiel was perfect at round two of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Professional Indoor Ice Race Series in Flint, Michigan, winning five heats and a final and moving Into a tie for the series title with round-one winner Craig Pickett. e vv IMAArena Aint. Georgia/Florida Winter Series Round 1: Alma MX Park Jason Storms made it to the night's main event the hard way - by winning the B main and while it wasn't the way he wanted it, it was better than watching from the stands. When the green light flashed, Chuck timed the light to a T, grabbing the holeshot in front of his hometown crowd. Pickett, Wyskiel and McDermitt followed. Buchanan got a great jump off the second row and was knocking on McDermitt's rear wheel, looking for a position improvement before the end of lap two. Out front, Wyskiel used his fluid riding style to drop inside of Pickett. moving him back a spot to take over second place with just three laps in the books. On the next lap, Pickett got loose in turn two and found himself in Buchanan's sights. Buchanan made a move on McDermitt to put the number-one plate in fourth. Out front. Wyskiel was hounding Chuck in every comer until he finessed his way past and never looked back. The race was now for second, and while Wyskiel was out front, battling Chuck, Buchanan had passed Pickett and was now looking to displace Chuck. With just three laps to go in the final, it was Wyskiel's race to lose, but this veteran was riding flawlessly. Buchanan was now bumping Chuck in each turn, wanting a shot at Wyskiel. With a lap and a half to go, Buchanan made a pass on Chuck and was now making a run at Wyskiel, with time running out. But it was Wyskiel's night, and there was nothing anyone could do to ruin it; Wyskiel crossed the finish line out front with a fist in the air. Buchanan was the runner-up and had a great ride in the main, coming from row two, but in the end it was too big a hurdle to clear. The last man on the podium was Chuck, who held off a last-lap charge by fourth-place rider Pickett. McDennitt was fifth after a tough final in which he was bounced around a lot. Andy, Stonns, Mayer and Villella rounded out the top nine. n With the last round slated for Kalamazoo's Wings Stadium on February S, the championship fight is stronger than ever, with Wyskiel and Pickett tied at 27 for the series lead. With both Buchanan and Chuck just a click back, the Indoor Professional Ice Race Series championship title is still up for grabs. A tip of the hat to the Flint Motorcycle Club, which for 43 years has hosted the Big Brothers/Big Sisters event and raised many thousands of dollars for this very worthwhile cause. s Gray Grabs the Green By JAY IRVIN ALMA, GA, FEB. 2 Nearly 170 riders piled into Alma MX. Park for the opening round of the Georgia/Florida Winter Series. The sunny, springlike conditions were just right for racing. The big winner of the day was Florida standout Brian Gray, who took home wins in the Dash For Cash and the Money class. The Dash For Cash was a two-lap sprint with a winner-take-all format. Ohio rider David Hill took the early lead and held the point for the entire first lap and most of the second lap. Gray executed a little bump-and-run on Hill a few corners before the checkers. Hill ended up on the ground, and Gray took the win with ease. With the help of some great sponsors, Alma MX. put up a $1000 purse for the Money class. Twelve riders lined up to battle it out for a share of the loot. In moto one, Gray and Hill got a one· two start and tried to check out on the field. For several laps, Extreme Suzuki rider Dustin McKenzie, riding third, kept them honest. After rubbing plastic for the first part of the race, Gray pulled a slight lead over Hill. Another Florida rider, John Lundy, came from a near·last·place start to take second from Hill in the closing laps. Hill held on for third, and David Kilgore piloted his Suzuki to a close fourth. Gray took the holeshot in moto two, with Hill and Lundy on his heels. With the top finishers from moto one out front, the stage was set for a no-holds-barred battle to the end. While Hill and Lundy went back and forth for second, Gray was on the gas out front, padding his lead more and more. Lundy got by Hill for second but was unable to close the gap to the leader. Gray took the second-moto win; this gave him the overall as well as the lion's share of the $1000 purse. Lundy was second, and Hill rounded out the top three. In molo one of 125cc B-c1ass action, Yamaha riders Jordan Gooch and Jeffrey Tyson gave the fans something to cheer about. The two battled for the lead from start to finish. Tyson held the lead for most of the mota, with Gooch shOWing him a wheel in almost every corner. Gooch made a strong bid for the lead on the last lap but lost his front end and went down. He remounted just in time to hold off Savannah, Georgia's Jason Waters for the runner-up spot. Gooch got the start he needed in moto two and pulled an early lead. Tyson was never able to challenge and had to settle for second. Waters once again was a close third. The Over 30 class prOVided some close racing action as well. Lee Tatham and Steve Dumond stayed close the entire moto. Tatham was consistent and was able to hold off every attack Dumond made. Derrell Mullis took third, and David Brewer came through the pack after a bad start to finish fourth. Mota two got under way with Brewer grab· bing the holeshot. After his bad start in moto one, Brewer was on a mission. Tatham was determined to make it a clean sweep with a 1-1 tally. Tatham hounded Brewer the whole race but couldn't seem to shake him. Tatham was the most consistent on the day and took the overall win. Brewer was second, and Dumond come in third. Alma MX Park Alma, Georgia Results: February 2, 2003 (Round 1l P/W 50: I.
