With one lap to go, Green had moved himself into second place. After pulling closer and closer to Wilson, Green cleanly passed the leader on the outside of a tight lBO-degree corner that was preceded by a long fourthgear straightaway. At the end, it was Green taking the win over Smith, Wilson. Morrison and Merrill. "Arter that start, I thought I would get maybe a fourth or fifth at best," said an ecstatic Green after his first moto. Yl'm very excited that I was able to work my way back after stalling off of the line. I'd like to at least get a better start for the second moto." Green had no such luck; the second-moto holeshot was taken by Cameron Lewis, followed by Merrill, Smith and the rest of the pack. Green was occupying the 12th position. Smith quickly got around Merrill for the lead, and Lewis, Wilson, Morrison, Dillon Nelson and Green were left to argue over who would be next in line. As Smith and Merrill began to battle back and forth for the lead, Green began to make his charge toward the front. Merrill finally made the pass on Smith stick in a double section. Then Wilson fell prey to Green. With two laps to go, Smith had fallen to third. and Green set his sights on Merrill for the second-moto win. Green pushed as hard as he could throughout the final laps, shadowing Merrill's every move. However, it wasn't until the last lap that Green cleared a large tabietop after a whoop section, while Merrill singled. The pass was made. Then, in the very next corner, Merrill powered around the outside to take the lead back from Green going into the next double section. With one tum to go, Green settled for second - but first overall for the day on a 1-2 tally. Smith (2·3) was second, and Merrill (5-1) was third overall. MI felt more confident about moving up after that second bad start," Green said after his second-mota charge. "Randy rode good. It was a good race. I'd like to thank my mom and dad, J-Jones, and Three Thirty 7 Motocross School for helping out these past few months." Results HON (0·61: 1 lucas ~rrechia: 2. Anthony Gonza~. HON (7·91: I. IB Jason Wright was able to take the win in the 85cc Starter class at Starwest despite some tough competition from Chad Collingwood and Corey Gullett. Honda rider Jarred Loop nailed the firstmoto holeshot, followed by Collingwood, Gullett and Wright. Loop had the early lead, but it didn't last long, as a first-turn fall allowed Collingwood, Gullet and Wright to get by. Taking over the lead, Collingwood looked in control, but Wright was on the move. Wright planned his pass on Gullett in the back straight and set his sights on Collingwood. When the white flag came out, Collingwood was holding on to the lead, with Wright close behind. Collingwood took the win, followed by Wright and Gullett. In the second moto, it was Loop again with the holeshot, followed by Gullett and Wright. Gullett quickly took the lead from Loop, and Wright followed closely to move into the second position. Gullett was in trouble after the first lap, as Wright decided not to settle for second. Lap after lap, the two were inseparable, as Wright was trying desperately to find his way into the lead. With only two laps left, Wright made his move down the back straight no SI6n UP RACE DAY PRE EnTERED CLASSES OnlY TEEny Mini TO OVER 50 ( ACLASS FOR EVERYOnE) Inro: 214_351.9900 UJUJUJ. ncmK.com cue I e n eVIls FEBRUARY 12, 2003 37
