Woodland Motocross Part<: Chris Clark (110) had his hands full with Grayson Hart in the Over 30 Expert class at round five of the Northwest Vintage & Evolution Motocross Series but still snared an overall win in the class when Hart tallied a DNF in moto two. Clark also won the Open Expert class in Woodland, Washington. Northwest Vintage & Evolution MotlIt:ross Championship Series Round 5: Woodland Motocross Parle Sweeten, Skiver Score at Woodland (along with many other riders), and Clark was the overall winner in thjs class, also. Hart's day started off pretty well, although after topping the first sets of motos in the 125cc and Over 30 Expert classes, the former National number 72 missed the opening laps of the 250cc Expert/Intermediate class and finished third, behind Honda rider Randy Brown (who was followed by Intermediate riders Adam Saario and Dan Cunha, both on CZs) and Joe Casey. Casey came back to command mota two and capture the overall Expert-class win, ahead of Brown, while Bultaco rider Travis Anderberg's 4-1 placings netted him the overall Intermediate win, ahead of John Trudeau and Lorin Smith. (Both Saario and Cunha, who went one-two in moto one. didn't make the starting grid for moto two.) Honda jockey Randy Butler and Maicomounted John Daniels stayed in close quar· ters during the first 17 -rider 250cc Evolution Amateur mota, dicing for position in the early stages. Butler carded the win, followed by Daniels, Jeff Kendall, Cole Calder and Jim Wise. Butler took command on the first lap of moto two. but after that the race favored Daniels, who, by virtue of his second-mota win, gamered the overall victory. Butler (1-2), Kendall (3-3), Jim Munger (6-4) and Calder (4-6) filled out the top five overall. Another of the classes to draw large numbers was the Over 40 Evolution Amateur class. Starters were many but finishers were few in this class, as only seven riders braved the conditions for mota two. Jeff Fremoun aced both motos while campaigning a Suzuki to lead the way overall. Yamaha rider Norman McCord finished second via 2-2 consistency, while Rick Faltersack (4-3), Munger (3-4) and Randy Johnson (5-5) completed the top five. Other riders who won two classes included Dan Thoren, Charlie Martin, Daniels, Leon Leonard and Mark Mitman. By CLAY LJGHT WOODLAND, WA, JAN. 19 Yamaha-mounted Dennis Sweeten has missed much of the Northwest Vintage (, Evolution Motocross Championship Series this season, but despite the lack of seat time and under adverse conditions, Sweeten was the dominant rider in the Open and Four-Stroke Evolu- tion Expert classes at Woodland Motocross Park in southwest Washington, site of round five of the nine-round series. Sweeten snapped the three-race Open-class win streak of Oregon's Kurt Stevens. Former Grand National IT and road-race star Randy Skiver, however, hasn't missed a single round of the series, and the Washingtonian has put in some pretty impressive performances this season. Skiver has logged several three-class win tallies, and this day was much the same. Skiver, who normally campaigns Penton and Can-Am machinery, came armed with a BSA this time, although in the end the results were much the same as they've been all season long: Skiver topped the Pre-1g70, Over 50 and FourStroke Expert classes at Woodland, all via 1- 1 placings. There was a huge rider turnout - the best since round two - though finishers were few in the second motos. Such was the case in the 125cc Vintage Amateur class. Honda-mounted Shannon Rimkus won both motos and conVincingly beat series front~runners Nick Chapman and Rob Hooker. Chapman. riding a Hodaka Super Combat, placed second to the relatively unknown Rimkus to gamer second overall, followed by Hooker (3-3) and Honda thumper pilot Chris Kerber (5-4). Another of the consistent front-runners, Thai Anderson, found himself relegated to fifth overall after placing fourth in moto one and seventh in the second round. CZ rider Chris Clark was again a two-class winner, although he did have exceptionally tough competition from Grayson Hart in the Over 30 Expert class. Clark also had to get a bit of a break (some bad luck on Hart's part) in order to clinch his second win of the day, though, as Hart beat Clark to the finish line in mota one but then did not finish mota two, giving Clark the overall win. It was a bit easier for Clark in the Open Expert class, as the rider from Gladstone, Oregon, held off challenges from Husky rider Dirk Murphy in mota one for a win. Murphy was a no-show in mota two 32 FEBRUARY 12, 2003' I: U I: Woodland Motocross Park Woodland, Washington Results: January 19, 2003 (Round 5 of 91 VIntage XR7.5 AM: 1. Cody Luke: 2. Winter Blast Monster Mountain Motocross Parle Ransdell Ransacks Monster Mountain By STEVE AND PEGGY CORLEE TALLASSEE, AL, JAN. 12 Despite a blast of arctic air that blew through the Southeastern United States, Monster Mountain opened the 2003 motocross season in grand style. Riders from 11 states as well as Canada converged on Alabama's premier motocross facility and were greeted by perfect racing conditions. The Greg Cole/Southern Dirt-prepped course was in absolutely perfect condjtion, and the racing action was great. In the Pro ranks, Alabama's Josh Thompson dominated the day, taking wins in both classes via 1·1 moto sweeps. Meanwhile, in the Mini ranks, another chapter of racing history opened as Georgia's Grant Ransdell made the move up from the 65cc ranks to the 80s. Ransdell, ranked among the best in the nation during his 50cc days, made the transition in style, as he swept the 85cc Junior field in his first 80cc ride. In addition, he put his brand on the 65cc class. The combined 125cc A/B contest provided plenty of fireworks. YZF-mounted Thompson had his hands full from the start. New Jersey's Dave Ginolfi put his YZ in front. ahead of Thompson and Georgia's Josh Askew, while Yamaha-mounted Justin Unk led the B class. Thompson made the pass into the lead on lap two and was never again headed. Ginolfi and Askew were content to maintain second and third, and moto one ended rather uneventfully. The second moto, however, was anything but dull. Ginolfi again grabbed the start, with Thompson and Askew in tow. Before the first lap was over, Askew had moved from third to first, and Thompson was a distant third. Before Askew was able to get comfortable, Ginolfi regained the lead, and he and Askew started mixing it up. Thompson, meanwhile, was getting closer. He first made the pass on Askew and then aimed for Ginolfi. On the very last lap, Thompson made his move and went into the lead. Race two ended with Thompson out front, followed by Ginolfi and Askew. Unk easily topped the B class again, as he had in the first race. The 250cc A class featured a stellar field of talent as well. At the start of moto one, Mobile, Alabama's Ronnie Ramiscal grabbed the holeshot, ahead of Thompson. Canada's Dan Rounding, and Alabama's Dash Lyle. Thompson immediately started putting pressure on Ramiscal and made the pass for the lead on lap two. On the next lap, Lyle put the screws to Ramiscal and took over second after a terrific battle. Thompson was able to take advantage of the scrap for second and built up a good lead. The moto ended with Thompson in front, followed by Lyle, Rounding and Ramiscal. Alabama's Buck Hartzog took the B-cJass win, over Josh McCarty and Justin Unk. The second moto was pretty much all Thompson. as he led from wire to wire. There was plenty of racing back in the pack. however, as Honda-mounted Davy Duprel, Ramiscal, Lyle and Rounding fought tooth and nail for position. Duprel held down second for most of the first lap before giving it up to Ramiscal. Rounding led Lyle for third for a couple of laps; then Lyle got by. While all this was going on, local Pro Action rep Johnny Borders was steadily moving up on his KTM 250 SX. Borders made the pass on Lyle and briefly held down third before Lyle could recover and take back the spot. Moto two finally came to a close with Thompson in front, followed by Ramiscal and then Lyle. Borders and Rounding fought for fourth all ,-----------------w w ~ II: o o > 1B 0.. o Z < W ~ i:; ~ Monster Mountain Motocross Part<: Grant Ransdell made the move up to the 85cc ranks in Tallassee, Alabama; he easily topped the 85cc Junior class as well as the 65cc class.
